Pitchup.com introduces ‘pitch and pub’ proximity search

Dec 7 2009 Posted by Lewis Shields

Pitchup.com has partnered with The Good Pub Guide to introduce a ‘pitch and pub’ proximity search that enables users to not only find the best winter camping and caravan sites, but the ones with the best watering holes nearby.

The site’s mapping technology now displays icons showing pubs listed by The Good Pub Guide in close proximity to the selected pitch site. An additional information panel also details the distance of the pub from the site, as well as the pub’s rating from The Good Pub Guide.

Pubs are rated as Good Pub Guide Recommended or Lucky Dip and the site also contains details of around 50,000 other pubs across the UK.

To become a Good Pub Guide Recommended pub, the establishment needs to have been recommended by a range of Guide readers and visited by at least one of the editorial team. Lucky Dip pubs, on the other hand, are often based on reader recommendation alone.

Pubs may also be detailed any of the five award icons, for excellence in that area. Awards include the Food Award, Stay Award, Wine Award, Beer Award and the Bargain Award. This functionality means that consumers can now chose their holiday location based on its proximity to the best pub in the area, or make a list of the best pubs in the area pre-stay – along with a host of other options such as campsites that allow campfires.

Dan Yates, Managing Director, Pitchup.com says, “A key part of the camping experience, particularly in the winter months, is enjoying cooler nights in a warm pub.

“This new functionality gives users further insight into camping and caravanning locations which, along with the site’s independent user reviews, make Pitchup.com an invaluable research tool.”

An example of a ‘pitch and pub’ match is:

Woodland Springs Touring Park  with  Drewe Arms  - Devon

Pitch: This tranquil and secluded site caters for caravans, motor homes and tents. It’s a great base to explore Devon and the surrounding area, with many farm and woodland walks starting from the park. Pitch prices start from £11 for this four-star, three-pennant site.

Pub: This beautiful thatched pub is situated in a charming village and close to Castle Drogo. It is home to Druid Ale which is brewed exclusively for the pub.
