Well, here’s a place to stay if you’re looking for romance under the stars – for what could be more romantic than a couples’ glamping bolthole in one of Zielo de Levante’s transparent ‘bubble’ houses or geodesic domes? This luxurious adults-only site is at Tírig, near Castellón in northern Spain, with easy access for weekend getaways from Barcelona (two hours’ drive) and Valencia (an hour). Each dome is heated and is kitted out with a proper bed with views of the sky, and you can catch a glimpse of the stars from your private shower too – a telescope is on hand for a closer look at the skies, too. Nothing is forgotten, with thoughtful extras like hair dryers, bathrobes and slippers coming as part of the package to keep you feeling and looking good. You can hire electric bikes if you’d like to get out and about exploring this mountainous region, but it may just be that you get no further than your private decking. No-one would blame you for grabbing some leisurely sunbathing time on loungers, and enjoying a dip in the plunge pool or a wallow in the Jacuzzi (extra charge), glass of fizz in hand while watching the stars on clear nights. No need to bother about cooking either, as seasonal dishes and fine wines can be delivered to your private dome – please order on arrival.

Local attractions

Fancy a leisurely stroll in the rugged mountain countryside? Combine it with a visit to the Museo de la Valltorta (five minutes’ walk) for its exhibitions on prehistoric rock paintings and then see the work of neolithic farmers, who painted archers and animals on cave walls up to 26,000 years ago. However, Zielo de Levante has a spectacular location amid mountain foothills in the Valltorta-Gasulla Cultural Park, and you can opt for longer hikes among the almond and olive trees surrounding the glampsite. If you’d rather explore on two wheels, hire electric bikes to take the pain out of pedalling up steep alpine tracks. For a change of scenery, swap mountains for the beach and head for the sandy straits that surround the cute resort of Alcossebre (50 minutes), where you can also stop off tours the 11th-century ruins of Xivert Castle and enjoy a glass of wine and a sharing plate of tapas along the seafront promenade.
