Electric grass pitch

  • Peaceful, scenic North Wales site on the edge of Eryri (Snowdonia)
  • A 10-minute drive to Caernarfon Castle; 20 to Zip World Penrhyn Quarry
  • Table tennis, skittles and pool table on site; 20 acres to explore
With a magical setting overlooking Eryri (Snowdonia) hills, Rhyd y Galen is a peaceful caravan and camping park in rural North Wales. Fancy exploring the mountains of Eryri (Snowdonia), the stunning North Wales coastline and the Isle of Anglesey? Then this is your place. For your ease, access to the grass camping pitches is via tarmac roads. Generous in size and fully serviced, these pitches with a whole host of facilities, from a spotless shower block, well lit at night for your convenience and kitted out with hair dryers to keep you looking your best, to a family-friendly baby-changing unit and a laundry. On hand are 20 acres of land for families (and any canine pals) wanting to be out walking, playing and exploring, and if the kids should get restless, keep them entertained with games of table tennis, table football, skittles or pool. If you need to stock up on groceries, there are several supermarkets in Caernarfon (10 minutes’ drive), and if you fancy making a night of it in the town’s pubs and restaurants, ditch the car and jump in a local taxi.

What customers say

Spacious pitches, top-notch facilities, and a warm welcome. Spotless toilets/showers praised. Great North Wales base. Mostly peaceful, but some road noise. Good security. A few calls for more bins and better signs.

Electric grass pitch

Liked The staff went over and above. I ordered a firepit on our 3rd day, and they drove it down for us and as I had paid for a gazebo which we couldn't put up as half of it was left behind, they allowed me to just pay the extra £5 for the firepit. They tried so hard to allow us another night, but it just wasn't possible, but I was so grateful for his efforts.

The toilets and showers were clean and the pitch we had was right next to the smaller convenience area, and we were pretty much always able to get in without a queue at all.

Everyone who was pitched up on site were friendly and thoughtful. My two sons made friends with a couple of other kids from the other side of our section. They swapped online name tags and have played with each other since. They spent hours over there playing football even though our 10yr old has never played a day in his life, but he absolutely loved being a goalie.

The whole area is so clean and taken care of. We had a water tap right behind our tent, many pitches had those wooden picnic table and chairs set up, the ground was pretty flat and well kept.

Honestly, it was the best site we have ever been to...and it had WIFI!

I would highly recommend them and I am sure we will be going back.

Disliked Nothing to dislike in my opinion.

From the manager: What a wonderful review — thank you so much, this really did put the biggest smile on our faces!

We're so pleased the team were able to help with the firepit and do their best to sort things out when the gazebo situation arose — it's always our aim to make sure every guest feels looked after, whatever comes up during a stay. We're sorry we couldn't squeeze in that extra night, but we're glad the efforts were appreciated!

It's also lovely to hear your sons had such a great time making new friends — the fact they're still playing together online is absolutely brilliant, and we love that the site played a small part in that.
Thank you for noticing all the little details too. We put a lot of care into those things and it means a great deal to know they're appreciated.

"The best site we've ever been to" — we couldn't ask for more. We can't wait to welcome you all back again soon!

From the manager: Thank you so much — 5 star across the board and the most organised clean site you've been to, we absolutely love to hear it!

We're really pleased the new shower and toilet blocks are already making a difference, and it's great to know the bus route to the Yr Wyddfa Ranger Path and Beddgelert village worked so well for you — a fantastic way to explore the area without the car!

Electric grass pitch

Liked Clean and tidy site. Staff are friendly and helpful.

Disliked Noise from the road in the camping field is annoying and could be solved with acoustic fencing. Some large groups of campers up very late and are noisy in the evenings. None of these problems are directly linked to the site and are my opinion only.

From the manager: I'm pleased that you found the site clean and tidy, but sorry that others disturbed your stay. Had you told a member of staff, we would have been able to address the problem.

Local attractions

Standing where the Afont Seiont river meets the Menai Strait, Caernarfon Castle (10 minutes’ drive) is a forbidding medieval fortress and a UNESCO World Heritage site. Perhaps best known as the place where Prince Charles was invested in 1969, it also houses the Royal Welch Fusiliers Museum, which explores the history of this infantry regiment. If you’re in a ‘feel the fear, but do it anyway’ mood, you can head to Zip World Penrhyn Quarry (20 minutes), where the Velocity 2 zipline stretches across a lake, allowing you to travel at speeds of up to 100mph. If you are brave enough to keep your eyes open during your flight, you can also take in splendid views of Eryri (Snowdonia). For something less hair-raising, Portmeirion (40 minutes) is a village featuring Italian-inspired pastel-coloured buildings and lush sub-tropical vegetation. Grab an ice cream from Italian gelateria Caffi’r Angel, and take a leisurely stroll through the quaint streets or along the sandy beach on the Afon Dwyryd estuary.
