  • Woodland glamping five minutes’ drive from Southbourne, West Sussex
  • Emsworth village 10 minutes’ drive; Chichester 15 minutes
  • Spacious bell tents with gated access; free breakfast and log bundle
A woodland retreat with easy access to some spectacular stretches of coastline? Sounds just like the ticket. And that’s what’s on the menu at Southwood Park, a peaceful family- and dog-friendly site in West Sussex, on the outskirts of the South Downs National Park and a 25-minute drive from the Chichester Harbour Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty. You’ll be staying in luxury five-metre bell tents with heaps of space and hotel-style amenities, including a real double bed with quality bed linen (but do bring your own towels), plenty of storage, and tea- and coffee-making facilities… not forgetting the woodburning stove keeping everything nice and toasty. Even better, guests at this site get a free log bundle and free breakfast included with their stay. With gated access and 24/7 CCTV, the site feels remarkably secure, and you can let the kids run around freely in the large play area (also enclosed so they won't be able to escape your clutches). Rainy days are no problem, with a book library, a range of board games you can borrow for epic playing sessions and a TV room where you can all catch up on your favourite programmes. Communal facilities include a modern toilet block, hot-water showers and a washing-up area. If you’re up for a barbecue, you can stock up on provisions at any of the supermarkets in Southbourne (five minutes’ drive across the A27) and store them in the communal freezer. Alternatively, you can sample the hot meals prepared on site or head out to the local pub (15 minutes’ walk).

Luna bell tent (six person)

Liked: Fantastic site for the children, safe & secure. Food was a reasonable price, well cooked. Everywhere nice & clean. Tents are a nice size & very comfy. If you want a Halloween break this is the place to go & you would not be disappointed as so much effect has been put into the decorations around the site. All had a lovely weekend.

Disliked: Showers were a bit cold for me.

Luna bell tent (four person)

Liked: We liked everything about Southwood, from the personal welcome and being able to text the owner about a last minute change of bringing our dog, nothing was a problem or too much trouble. Rachel is so helpful. Facilities - everything was clean, the water pressure for outdoor showers is great. Toilets with mirrors in a clean toilet block, freezer space of which anyone could use was brilliant. There isn’t any power in the bell tent however everything has been meticulously thought through, from a light in the middle of the room, a touch-lamp by the side of the bed, tea and coffee was provided with a kettle and gas stove, a mirror, and a wardrobe/clothes rail. The log burner made the tent very cosy in the evenings. A charging pack was provided and padlock for the tent. The park and games room were perfect for my children, there were lots of board games, giant outdoor games, badminton, football goals with a light-up football for dusk, and a bar area that provided breakfast and dinner (the full English looked amazing, we didn’t have any during our stay as we brought lots of things with us). I can’t fault the service and the beautiful grounds of this glamping site. We shall definitely be returning! Thank you for a lovely stay.

Luna bell tent (three person)

Liked: This is a perfect place for a breakaway. The bell tents are clean with ample space with all the extras included. The owners Rachel and Adam are pleasant, friendly and very helpful. Any services requested is dealt with promptly and with a smile. Had a great evening sitting round the main firepit on site and having a great evening chatting with them and other people staying there. All the facilities, shower are great and clean, bath rooms are clean and fresh with a twist of humour, there is a separate dishes washing up area which is great. This is a kids friendly place with lots for the kidos to do to keep them entertained. All the tents are spaced very well so you can enjoy your own area in peace n quiet. The breakfast and dinner and drinks options are very good with plenty of options and they taste great too and is exceptionally well prices. This is a definite recommendation to friends and family(already boasted about it) and will go back again. Johan&Bettie

Luna bell tent (four person)

Liked: The site is in a beautiful setting with bell tents amongst the trees and wildflowers. Every little detail has been thought of from the provision of tea and coffee and biscuits which can be made on the provided gas camping stove to a chill out tent with bean bags etc for the kids. They also provide a power bank to charge your devices which can be exchanged for a fully charged one if this is not sufficient. Each pitch feels private and has its own picnic bench and firepit provided for which you can buy logs from the site and also a log burner in each tent for those chilly nights. There is a lovely marquee with an attached bar where you can get food and drink, have a game of pool or borrow a book or board game. Our kids also had a fabulous time playing with new friends in the playpark, on the small football pitch and badminton too. Neither they or us wanted to go home! We cooked on the communal bbq one of the nights we were there which was a lovely facility to have access to and there is also a pizza oven which can be hired. The showers were great and spotless as was the toilet block. The whole site was very well kept. Lovely weekend had by all of us and we'd love to return at some point. Thank you for all the hard work you all put in to make the site amazing.

Local attractions

The fishing village of Emsworth (10 minutes’ drive) is renowned for its antiques shops, its pretty streets lined with Georgian buildings and its waterfront paths. These include the Oyster Trail, exploring the area’s maritime heritage, and nature walks along the tidal flats (keep your eyes peeled for assorted birdlife). If you’re into archaeology, head to Chichester (15 minutes), where you can see well-preserved fortified walls, the remains of Roman baths at the Novium Museum and a vast collection of ancient mosaics at Fishbourne Roman Palace (on the outskirts of the city). There’s also lots for lovers of modern art, with a Marc Chagall window in Chichester Cathedral and the Pallant House Gallery. Activities at Chichester Harbour AONB include boat trips around the harbour and guided walks. The area also has a number of cycling paths (including the circular 26-kilometre Hayling Island Cycle Route) and several launch sites for paddleboards and canoes.
