  • Family-friendly paddock pitches in a quiet space on a Hampshire farm
  • Access to the South Downs Way and 25 minutes’ drive from Portsmouth
  • Play equipment, outdoor seating area and a fridge; short walk to a pub
With paddock pitches and access to the South Downs Way, you’ll be able to jump right into everything outdoorsy from Hyden Farm in Hampshire. Here, the horses and poultry are in full sight and groups will have their own space – so evenings could look like barbecues featuring home-produced meat from the farm or pottering down to the local pub, 10 minutes’ stroll away. Nine miles from Petersfield, this farm paddock has its own portable toilet, shower and a cabin with electricity and a fridge for those chilled food and cool drinks – and there's also play equipment and a mud kitchen where kids can expend a bit of energy. Outside, there’s a sink for water and a covered seating area (just the thing for those sunset hours with a drink). When you book in here, you’ll be the only guests on site, so there’s plenty of scope for games with friends or family. While you won’t have access to the farm itself, it makes for a fab view – and when you’re ready to get walking or cycling, the 100-mile-long South Downs Way will lead the way out into the surrounding South Downs National Park. Before you get going, though, you might want to stop for a brew at the sustainability centre and café a mile away, or perhaps go into Petersfield (15 minutes’ drive) for the market town’s shops, cafés and eateries. For those quick snacks and handy bits, there are local shops in Hambledon and Clanfield within a few miles of the site.

Liked: We had a great time camping at Hyden Farm! The farm is run by a very welcoming family in a beautiful setting. Our children loved the play area and even got to meet a newborn chick this morning. Thank you so much for your hospitality. We will definitely be returning!

Local attractions

Interested in things of old? Well, you won’t have too far to look from here, as Butser Ancient Farm (10 minutes’ drive) recreates ancient Stone Age, Iron Age, Roman Britain and Anglo-Saxon buildings, while Stansted Park (20 minutes) harks back to Victorian and Edwardian times with walks around the walled garden, a yew maze, light railway and mansion. Portsmouth (25 minutes) might have a lot of what you’d expect from a waterfront city – sailing and windsurfing activities and restaurants with a view – but it also has its own historic sites, especially the historic dockyard, which houses a Tudor shipwreck and other historic boats. You might be looking to indulge in a beach day or jet-skiing, sailing and swimming at Hill Head Beach (40 minutes) too, but those of you who can’t turn down walks in the stunning South Downs National Park will be well situated too… perhaps the ancient yews and wildlife at Kingley Vale (40 minutes) or the birds and woodlands around Beacon Hill National Nature Reserve (15 minutes) will draw you in first? Or cycling or mountain biking around the Queen Elizabeth Country Park (15 minutes)?
