Touring & camping site

  • Farm site with a pond and walking paths
  • A 10-minute drive to Barnard Castle and the Yorkshire Dales outskirts
  • Indoor soft play centre, café and farm shop on site
There should be plenty to keep the kids busy at Thorpe Farm Centre, a Co. Durham site within 10 minutes' drive of the edge of the Yorkshire Dales National Park and 20 minutes from the edge of the North Pennines National Landscape. If dipping and nature spotting at the peaceful pond doesn't sway them, seeing the animals in their paddocks or the many walking paths straight from the site surely will. The farm is also home to the 18th-century Peel House, which has a gift shop and The Courtyard Café serving breakfast and Sunday lunch. The farm shop also sells fresh local produce including bread, milk, bacon, sausages and eggs, and has a (rather unusual but possibly handy) reclamation barn selling furniture, antiques and collectables. The Thorpe Farm Centre indoor soft play area adds another space for kids to let off steam. It has a two-tiered soft play structure designed for kids up to eight years old, surrounded by comfortable seating where parents can rest their feet. Facilities on site include toilet and shower blocks with disabled access, fresh water and a chemical disposal unit. Dogs are very welcome but must be kept on leads while on site.

What customers say

A good site, clean with room to stretch out. Staff are grand, shop's well-stocked. Kids'll love the animals and play areas. Bit of road noise from the A66, mind, and some pitches are tricky to level. Showers could be hotter, but they're sorting it.

The toilets was far away from where we was pitched.

No bar open or pub closed.

From the manager: Thank you for taking the time to leave us a review.

We're pleased to hear you found our facilities clean and our team helpful – we'll be sure to share your kind comments with them.

We're sorry to hear that the road noise affected your stay and that the distance to the toilet and shower facilities from your pitch wasn't as convenient as you had hoped. We also appreciate your comments regarding the lack of an on-site pub. While we don't have a pub at Thorpe Farm Centre, we do recommend the nearby Morritt Hotel, which offers evening meals and a welcoming bar area.

Thank you again for your feedback, and we appreciate you choosing to stay with us.

We're delighted to hear you had such an enjoyable weekend stay and found everything you needed. It's wonderful to know you found pitching easy, enjoyed our facilities, and that our team made you feel welcome and were able to help. Hearing that you'd happily return and would recommend us 10/10 really means a lot to everyone here.

We're also grateful for your feedback regarding the mobile signal. As a rural location, coverage can vary depending on the network, but we appreciate you mentioning it.

Electric optional grass pitch

Liked Facilities on site great.
Amazing carvery
Loved the farm
First time booking a grass pitch, so much easier putting up awning

Disliked We were on a pitch closest to road, had read reviews so were prepared for this.
Didn't feel we could walk round the lake with it having a barrier (which was a shame)
Internet not great, luckily warm weather and son forgot to take his tablet anyway 🤣
Lots of dogs off lead
Neighbours coming onto our pitch, Neighbour decided to take a snooze infront of our caravan wrapped in a blanket, my little boy didn't see her and nearly hit her with a ball.

From the manager: Thank you for taking the time to leave us a review. We're so pleased to hear you enjoyed your stay and that you made the most of our facilities, farm and Sunday carvery. It's also great to hear that trying a grass pitch for the first time made setting up your awning easier!

We appreciate you sharing your feedback regarding the areas that could be improved. We understand that pitches closer to the A66 can experience road noise, and we're glad you were prepared for this before your visit.

We're sorry to hear that the barrier around the lake made you feel unable to explore that area, and we'll take this feedback on board when reviewing our signage and access information.

We also apologise for the issues you experienced with dogs being off lead and neighbouring guests encroaching on your pitch. This is not the standard we expect on site, and we take these matters seriously as we want all our guests to feel comfortable, safe and able to enjoy their own space during their stay.

Thank you again for your valuable feedback. We're delighted that, overall, you had an enjoyable visit and we hope to welcome you and your family back to Thorpe Farm again soon.

Electric optional grass pitch

Liked Everything is neat, clean and tidy. Staff are very friendly and helpful. Many things to do. Great farm shop with lots of choice of quality food and drink.

Disliked We got a pitch close to the main road. This was mentioned in the ad. Next time we'll aim for a pitch further away from the road for less noise.

Electric optional grass pitch

Liked Excellent facilities, very clean and well maintained

Disliked Proximty of the touring pitches to the A66 made it noisy, even with the roof of our campervan pulled down the road noise prevented a decent nights sleep

From the manager: Thank you for taking the time to leave us a review.

We're delighted to hear that you found our facilities clean, well-maintained and of a high standard. The team work hard to keep everything looking its best, so it's lovely to receive that feedback.

We're sorry to hear that the road noise affected your sleep. Being located alongside the A66 does mean that some guests notice traffic noise more than others, particularly when staying on the touring pitches closest to the road. We do make every effort to highlight this in our booking information so guests can make an informed choice before visiting.

Thank you again for your feedback, and we hope to welcome you back to Thorpe Farm Centre in the future.

From the manager: Thank you for taking the time to leave us such a lovely review.

We're delighted to hear your granddaughters had such a wonderful stay, especially the youngest on her first camping trip! It's fantastic that they enjoyed meeting the animals, playing in the park, and that the tyre swing was such a hit. We're also pleased our air-conditioned Soft Play provided the perfect place to cool off during the hot weather.

Thank you for your valuable feedback regarding the site map. We appreciate your comments about the toilets, shower block and Elsan point not being clearly marked, and we'll certainly review this to make finding these facilities easier for future guests.

We hope to welcome you and your family back to Thorpe Farm again soon for another memorable stay!
