  • Green and serene site in the spectacular Staffordshire Moorlands
  • Alton Towers within a 20-minute drive and 30 to the Peak District
  • 3.5 acres of open fields, five minutes from restaurants and pubs
For rollercoasters and roams alike, head off on a hol to Springfields Countryside Caravan and Camping, a 3.5-acre site with a large open field for playing in off a peaceful lane with hilly views. It’s less than a 20-minute drive to the rides at Alton Towers, 15 minutes to the city of Stoke-on-Trent and 200 metres from the main road… but the spectacular Staffordshire Moorlands surrounds mean you wouldn’t have a clue that it's all so close by. Tear yourself away from the vistas and ponder eats: they’re varied in the local area, with pubs and restaurants as well as Indian and Chinese takeaways five minutes away by car. In charge of cooking? The supermarkets of Cheadle are your spots to stock up less than a 10-minute drive up the road. Once you’ve got your meals sorted, you could be skirting the edges of the glorious Peak District National Park in half an hour, ready to roam around traditional market towns like Buxton Spa. Other typically English things to do in this area include perusing the pottery at the popular Wedgewood Museum at World of Wedgewood (15 minutes’ drive) and Gladstone Pottery Museum (10 minutes) or riding the working steam Foxfield Light Railway and the Churnet Valley Railway (10 and 15 minutes away). Alternatively, you can make like you’re in Milan by having a gander at the Italian-style Trentham Gardens about 20 minutes down the road. As is fitting for such a countryside setting, barbecues and campfires are permitted on site, and there's a washing-up area to aid with the cleanup mission. Also on site are toilets and showers revamped for the 2020 season.

Fully-serviced grass pitch

Liked: Wonderful customer service, facilities were really clean. Turned up on Easter Monday after a rainy weekend, and the site a little soggy, with a car a trailer, pulled into the plot without issue (after taking the advice of the owners), pitched and had a wonderful stay. Rain continued and pulled of the site without issue again despite the soggy conditions. The owners could not do enough for us and where on hand as and when they were needed. The kept the facilities really clean dispute the mud (thank you). We would definitely stay again.

Liked: Fantastic stay again at springfields...arrived and was greeted by david & sharon. Ground was super wet and when driving down we got our car stuck to which the guys were on hand to help pull us out along with a couple of people from the site. Stayed in no.14 which was nice secluded pitch and quiet. Could still see the park for the kids and just very relaxed. Kids love the park area and making new friends. We explored a few new places over the weekend but generally just had a nice relaxed time. Thank you to david for letting the kids ride on the buggy to bring our stuff back up...think that was their highlight!

Fully-serviced grass pitch

Liked: The camp site is close to Alton Towers and the toilets were kept clean

Disliked: On arrival at the site we were told it was a little damp that wasn't the case it was like a mud bath. We had to be towed onto our pitch and decided it wasn't worth moving the van but luckily we were with family that could ferry us around with them. Then it came to leaving which wasn't much fun but with the help of the owner and team we eventually got off after 2 hours of toing and froing. I understand that the site cant control the weather but some hard plastic grid matting would help in the future. Be aware there is a sheep dog that gets in from the farm next door that roams around and piddled up our tent.

Fully-serviced grass pitch

Liked: The tent pitches are a great size, and the personal tap on each one is very convenient. The showers and toilets were always clean. The staff were very friendly and helpful.

Disliked: Unfortunately, we arrived on Good Friday to an absolute mud bath. One vehicle in our party had to be towed on to the site, which should have been warning enough for us, but as we’d already paid and travelled 3 hours to the site, we had no choice but to stay. On the 3 occasions we wanted to leave the site (to go to the shops & Alton towers) we had to be towed out. All our brand new camping gear is covered in mud, as were all our clothes. We received a text message the day before setting off outlying all the rules for the site, it wouldn’t have been too much trouble to let us know of the situation in the field. Were we better informed we could have made the decision not to travel, or at least pack differently. There are signs up all over the site to make sure dogs are kept on leads at all times, but on two nights, we were visited by a sheepdog that urinated on our tent and fouled on the green where the children were playing. We did learn after speaking to the warden that it was in fact the neighbouring farm’s dog, and that they’re aware he’s on the site quite regularly. The showers and the amenities were very easy to use, even though the water heat was hit and miss. On Monday, after packing up our gear, it took nearly an hour to get off the site as we had to be towed out again. Disappointed to have had such a bad experience, as we were really looking forward to a long weekend break over the Easter holidays. We’ve had to pay a fortune after getting home to get our gear cleaned of all the mud.

From the manager: We are sorry that you felt the need to score us a 4, purely because you encountered bad weather during your stay. Anyone reading through all our reviews will see that this is not a true reflection of Springfields. Good Friday was our opening day and all the pitches were perfect and not a mud bath as you mention in your review. Easter was early this year and unfortunately we have no control over British weather. It rained on 2 days of your stay, the day you arrived and the day that you left, making the ground soft. On your arrival we explained the ground situation and asked that if your wheels spun to stop and call a staff member. However you chose not to follow this guidance on leaving, digging your vehicle in so far that the body of the vehicle was on the ground. This was further impacted by the fact that you unfortunately did not have a towing eye. All our staff and fellow campers worked arduously to get you out. The damage you made to the ground will take some time to recover! Leaving us with a pitch that can not be used for some time. We're happy that you found the toilets and showers clean, which goes to show the work that went into the weekend.

Liked: The tent was brand new with comfy bed and electric points. It also had a heater, table and four chairs and fire pit for toasting marshmallows- which the kids loved!

Disliked: We stayed in late March so it was a little cold and the heater could have been a little better/more powerful.

Fully-serviced grass pitch

Liked: I stayed in a Tentbox which was nice in the pitch. Really lovely pitches which all have running water and electric hook up. Feel private with the longer grass and lots of flowers. Views are lovely. Very clean and friendly.

Disliked: My only dislike was I could hear the traffic until the early hours on the road running at the side of the campsite and the main road just further away. I did forget my ear plugs and I’m sure with them it would have been fine but I did fine it spoiled the beautiful sounds of nature and I struggled to sleep until it got quieter. Not the campsites fault in any way which is why I still rate it 5 stars.

Local attractions

Whether you’re up for browsing the racks, meeting monkeys or taking on treetop adventures, Trentham Estate (20 minutes’ drive) is the place to go: this one-stop complex set around an old manor house has a shopping village, apes and a rope-based expedition course through the forest. Rather watch the horses or bike racing than rush about in the woods? Uttoxeter Racecourse is 20 minutes away from Springfields Countryside Caravan and Camping, while the Darley Moor Motor Cycle Road Race Club is reachable in half an hour. For calmer times, the stunning Dove Dale Stepping Stones and Thorpe Cloud – a limestone hill with views out over the Midland plain – are 20 minutes from the park for riverside and mountain walks. Or maybe try a bit of fishing? Blake Hall Fisheries (10 minutes' drive) sells day tickets for its three well-stocked lakes.
