  • Back-to-basics wild camping on a working dairy farm in Leicestershire
  • A 10-minute drive to golf courses; National Space Centre half an hour
  • Walks and animals on site, pubs and shops within a five-minute drive
Walton Lodge Farm campsite is set on a working dairy farm in a rural corner of Leicestershire – here you’re spoiled with a huge grassy camping field that’s nearly as flat as a pancake. Secluded and peaceful, it’s a smashing choice for those of you who’d rather do away with the rat race and get down to some seriously wild camping. A herd of Ayrshire cows have full range of the farm and you’ll soon spot them grazing and enjoying the summer weather in the fields. There are horses and ponies around too, and if you’re reasonably quiet going about your day, chances are you’ll spot wild rabbits and woodhens bobbing about in hedgerows. Generous pitches give you ample space to do as you please, and thanks to the flat Leicestershire landscape, you can easily drive right up to your pitch. The owners allow barbecues on site and can supply firepits if needed. The toilets are between three and five minutes' walk from the pitches, depending on the spot you pick. Leicester (25 minute’ drive) is your best bet for loading up the grocery supplies, but there are plenty of small villages where you can pick up the basics. Sutton in the Elms and Broughton Astley (both five minutes) have handy stores and a few pubs – and you can walk to both across the fields.

Primitive grass tent or trailer tent campsite

Liked: Back to basics which was just what we wanted. Loads of room for kids to play and run and for the dogs to roam very quiet hardly any other campers. Clean portaloos and very remote. We did have a morning being woken up by the cows but it was fine they are a working farm at the end of the day They have some stunning horses We were left to our own means which suited us fine

Liked: Only one campervan on site at the other end of the field. Onwer is friendly and helpful. Had a fire pit. Was cheap.

Disliked: Muddy entrance to the field. Some road noise but it's easily blocked out. No showers
