‘Wot’s Shropshire?’ asked Only Fools and Horses’s Maaarlene of husband Boycie, when he announced an imminent move to there from Peckham to avoid being fitted with concrete slippers by the Driscoll brothers. Oh, Maaarlene. For shame. Shropshire may not have the varied delights of south-east London, but we’d move there in a heartbeat nonetheless to potter about the hundreds of listed buildings in Charles Darwin’s birthplace Shrewsbury, hike the Shropshire Hills AONB or spend the day/week at Ludlow Racecourse to win the price of a custom-built luxury motorhome. Or two.

Shropshire also has the longest river in Britain in the River Severn, a few thousand miles’ worth of long-distance footpaths including the Severn Way (not recommended in Marlene-style heels), and the UNESCO World Heritage Site of Ironbridge Gorge, one of the birthplaces of the Industrial Revolution and possibly a place that would interest Boycie as a businessman with Victorian values. For all this and more non-Marlene activities, look for Shropshire campsites according to theme such as walkers’ paradise, leisure nearby, amenities on site and more using the dozens of filters.
