Flutter over for friendly stays at The Crown Inn, a site welcoming kids and adults in the grounds of a traditional country pub. It's 10 minutes’ drive from the Wiltshire market town of Devizes with views of the Saint Mary of the Virgin church spire from its green grounds. In the North Wessex Downs National Landscape, this dog-friendly place is well located for scenic hikes and rambles among historical sites and hilly countryside: within five minutes, join the 13-mile Wansdyke Path towards Marlborough or follow the long-distance track along the Kennet and Avon Canal that connects Bristol and Reading. On wanders hereabouts, keep eyes to the hillsides… some within an easy trot are home to ancient white horses – chalk horses, that is. The White Horses of Devizes and Alton Barnes are roughly 10 minutes away and the famed Westbury White Horse is within 35 minutes. Effort-free days on site are very much in order too – fill up on local eats in the pub then nurse a drink in the beer garden while the kids play. Two 24-hour outdoor toilets, combined with a shower, are on site, and there are also drinking water facilities.

Positiv Great place.

Negativ Maybe the five pound charge if I'd wanted to use shower and toilet but it was a one night stay so managed without.

Grasbewachsener und kiesbedeckter Wohnmobil-Stellplatz ohne Stromanschluss

Positiv We arrived and met the landlord of the pub. He was very welcoming and gave us all of the information about the site.
The two showers and toilets were both clean and modern. The field adjacent to the pub is where we stayed in with our camper. Generally the field is level and well kept in height.
You are allowed fire pits and bbq`s - but they must be off the ground. You are also allowed music, but this must understandably be lowered in volume after 11pm. We used the pub ( quite a lot :-) ) Both the staff in there as well as the regulars, were both friendly and helpful. Laura who was covering both the running of the pub and the camp site - We could not fault her.
They have goats on site, these are characters and certainly a great addition for both kids and adults to go and pet.
The pubs offers plenty of seating both indoors and outdoors and occasionally has music on. The pubs location is good, as its kinda out the way......... but also near enough by car, to major shops and sites.

Negativ As the camp field got busier - it showed what was needing to be done.
In time, we feel it would need a wash up area and maybe some bins in the camp field somewhere, rather than just over next to the pub. Around certain areas of the field - it could do with a small tidy up as there are disregarded posts / timbers with nails sticking out of them. Whilst no issue to adults, i feel it could possibly be a different story for a child at some point.
Sadly our last night was somewhat spoilt by a drunken, knuckle dragging, pathetic excuse of a man, who was abusive to my partner."He acted like a bulletproof vest, but he was just a cheap cardigan with an attitude problem." Needless to say, i defended her and fortunately the exchange of words was all it amounted to.
I must say though - you could get this happen on any site, so this is no reflection on the Crown Inn camping field.

Vom Platzbetreiber: Good Afternoon Keith
Thank you for your feedback. We are glad you enjoyed your stay, Laura did a great job whilst we were away, we will pass your comment on to her. We are taking on board all the issues raised, and will rectify by doing a full inspection of the Camping Field. We are in the process of installing a new Washing Up Facility. As this is our first year here, we still have things to improve. Very sad to hear about the issue you had with that person, and we hope it wont deter you from returning in the future.
Kind Regards
Colin/Karen

Grasbewachsener und kiesbedeckter Zelt- oder Zeltanhänger-Stellplatz ohne Stromanschluss

Positiv Good price, friendly staff, peaceful during the day.

Negativ Toilet and shower situation is an absolute nightmare and would put us off coming back. There are only two toilet and shower rooms to accommodate the whole site, which meant regular waiting and queues to use the toilet especially in the mornings when everyone wanted to shower, which if we had realised this we wouldn’t have booked. Both of which had codes to enter for entry. This was a nightmare especially with children or in the middle of the night. To reach the toilets you have to walk through a busy pub garden, which at night in pjs or with children is not pleasant and somewhat awkward - which is something I have never felt camping before.
There was also no washing up facilities whatsoever, there was a blocked dirty old outside sink with a hose in that I imagine once upon a time may have been a washing up area. We cooked the first night and went wandering around to find somewhere to wash up, only to return to our tent to have to make do washing with up with cold water at the side of the tent, which did not work well!
The noise of the pub garden was so loud it kept the whole family awake until the pub closed on the first night (Friday) which almost made us leave the next day rather than staying the other night we had booked.
It was far from the relaxed carefree camping experience we had hoped for and will not be returning unfortunately.

Vom Platzbetreiber: Good Afternoon,
Thank you for your feedback, we are so sorry your experience was not what you had hoped for. This is our first year opening our campsite, and we still have teething problems. We are in the process of rectifying the issues you have raised, with a new washing up facility top of our list. As we are a pub, and do have seating outside, unfortunately sometimes people can be a bit loud, but we do monitor noise levels as best we can.
With regards to the Toilets and shower facilities, at the moment we cannot justify the cost to add more, due to the amount of campers we have.
Hopefully we hope to see you return in the future.
Kind Regards
Colin/Karen

Grasbewachsener und kiesbedeckter Zelt- oder Zeltanhänger-Stellplatz ohne Stromanschluss

Positiv Very friendly owners and staff.
Located in the beautiful village of Bishops Cannings, once described as the most quintessential English village.
A short drive from Devizes, Avebury and Marlborough. So many historical sites within half an hour’s drive.
Plenty of space, nice and clean toilet and showers.
We didn’t eat at the pub or use the WiFi, so can’t comment on either of those.

Grasbewachsener und kiesbedeckter Zelt- oder Zeltanhänger-Stellplatz ohne Stromanschluss

Positiv Nothing to like from the experience we had

Negativ I was contacted the day before we were due to stay (after 3pm ) to be told that the pub had been unexpectedly closed for a week and wouldn’t be serving food, but drinks would be available.
When we arrived we attempted to enter the pub for a drink to be told we couldn’t have a drink as they were closed.
I told the woman that we were told drinks would still be available and the response I got was ‘first we are told one thing, then another…… what do you want?’ We were finally served with a drink, but seemed begrudgingly and not very welcoming! Also told we had to sit outside and could only stay til 7pm
All in all a very expensive night for a field (which later turned into a car park for a private event at the pub) without the facilities that were advertised ……

£35 for this was very overpriced and we were not given the opportunity to book anywhere else due to the late notice

Positiv Location, peaceful, quiet, spacious.

Grasbewachsener und kiesbedeckter Zelt- oder Zeltanhänger-Stellplatz ohne Stromanschluss

Positiv Nice camping field and pub garden

Negativ No chef at the pub but not forewarned and this was the reason for chosing the site. Two toilets with showers so if someone in the shower, cannot use toilet. Not many campers but had to wait an age for toilet and not very clean. Only outdoor tap appeared to be a hose for plants and worst was no washing up facilities. Very expensive considering no electric.

Sehenswürdigkeiten in der Nähe

There’s no need to venture far for local attractions when settling in at this site: it’s a five-minute drive to spots like the Avebury Stones circle, the prehistoric artificial chalk mound of Silbury Hill and the Atwell-Wilson Motor Museum. Travelling a touch further – around 10 minutes – will get you to the market town of Devizes with its castle, museum and brewery plus a whole host of shops and restaurants; Bowood House and Gardens, on the other hand, is 20 minutes’ drive for wanders around a Grade I listed Georgian country house and its 100 acres of pretty parkland. Schedule in some time to linger for longer at Lacock, a well-preserved village run by the National Trust that’s barely changed since the 19th century – so little so that it’s appeared in Downton Abbey. Recognise scenes from the series while tottering around the traditional stone cottages, old workhouse, medieval tithe barn and village church 20 minutes’ drive from The Crown Inn.
