Opened by the Shingler family in 1974, Lower Lacon Caravan Park is just a mile from the stunning market town of Wem in north Shropshire. With train and bus services in Wem being within walking distance, the site has easy access to plenty of local attractions, including Shrewsbury, Ellesmere and Whitchurch (which are all within 25 minutes' drive of the site if you'd rather take your own transport). The site has a very convenient and secure set-up, with a barrier system, 24-hour emergency cover and a warden and owners living on site. There are two play areas on site, as well as crazy golf and a heated outdoor swimming pool with a toddler's paddling pool (please take note that the pools are only open during high season for pre-booked sessions only, and weather dependent). For extra entertainment, the J.A.K.K.S. Barn (open on weekends during low season and closed during winter) has a bar and occasional family discos. When you're hungry, pick up snacks at the on-site supermarket, which also has an off-licence. The J.A.K.K.S. café and takeaway (open on weekends during low season and closed during winter) are on hand for further refreshments. By the pool, there's the choice of CJ's Snack Bar (weather dependent) and the adults-only Windmill Lounge Bar (only open during high season or on weekends during low season and winter), which has a marquee. Lower Lacon Caravan Park has a pretty cool backstory, having started as the back entrance for the Aston Park American Army Camp, a munitions and distribution depot built in World War II (on land purchased from owner Clive's paternal grandfather). During its development, a D8 bulldozer sank in the soil, so the land was covered with three feet of solid materials from local foundries; this can make placing pegs difficult but it also means that the team have never had to turn away any customers due to bad weather as the pitches stay firm.

Dieser gut geführte Campingplatz ist ideal für Familien, mit vielen Aktivitäten & Annehmlichkeiten. Stellplätze sind geräumig. Personal wird oft gelobt. Einige fanden Sanitäranlagen altmodisch/es gab Lärm. Hundefreundlichkeit war gemischt.

Positiv outdoor pool, pitch size, cleaniness, park, facilities absolutely everything

Negativ nothing to dislike, its a brilliant site.

however our set up was a large tent, camper with awning, 4 kids, 2 aduklts and 2 dogs. if you want a bigger pitch size (cheaper than booking 2 seperate pitches), then do direct as they reserve those ones for direct campers.

Positiv My kids loved the park. The size of the pitch was great and the privacy from the hedge.

Negativ Most other things. It was really hard to pitch as under the thin layer of grass is just stone. The pitches weren’t very well marked out and the map they give you is useless. The ladies in reception were very unhelpful and rude. The pool was freezing and not very clean. We were in the family pitches and they’re not anywhere near any toilets or washing up facilities. The showers are outdated and you have to be careful what time of day you shower as they might be cold. Some of the other campers were just feral!! One child got run over by another child going around on his motorbike!! I smelt drugs being smoked numerous times but didn’t see where it coming from. All in all we didn’t enjoy our stay here and won’t be rushing back.

Negativ Everything else!!
There’s a long list of things that we disliked.. not enough toilets or washing up facilities, the ones there were filth.
The staff in reception were rude and extremely unhelpful.
The pool was freezing and dirty.
You can’t actually put any tent pegs in because it’s just rocks and stones under a thin layer of grass.
Majorly over crowed!

Positiv Good sized pitches, cafe on site, two bars, one an adult only, open air swimming pool. The staff were very friendly and knowledgeable of the local area & a well stocked shop.

Positiv Real location, great for kids, entertainment although the sane every night other than saturdays, the kids did enjoy, swimming pool great minus the wasps, but thats hard to resolve, reasonable shop onsite, park for kids was great, felt comfortable in general there, will return.

Negativ Take away was awful, raw fish i was met by a young lad when i complained stating you must be right and our probes are wrong, we must need new ones, believe me the fish was raw, and at £8.95 for a frozen fish i did expect it to be cooked at least.

Positiv Stayed at the edge of the field with our friends and our dogs so we were away from all the busy families/ children as adults only so position was good. Showers and Toilets good and easy accessible. Takeaway great for chips!! Walk to Wem about 1 mile - nice bakery and Joules pub. Dog field great

Negativ Rules state all dogs on leads - this was not the case. All our 3 dogs were on leads and we had to tell one particular family several times to come and collect their 3 dogs that were constantly left roaming around untethered and annoying our dogs.

Rules say no open fires - 🔥 - we saw loads! Loads of open fires - the people next door to us had one and many others campers too. There was even someone dragging a log across to their tent.

If you're looking for activities that'll entertain the kids, however, make a beeline for Hoo Zoo and Dinosaur World (35 minutes). The site is near plenty of historic Shropshire towns and villages, from Hodnet (10 minutes) and Ellesmere (20 minutes) to Market Drayton (20 minutes) and Oswestry (40 minutes).
