Off grid, down on the farm - get the kids out and about

Family of four from £13 per night

Pitchup.com, the UK’s leading outdoor accommodation specialist, knows just how important holidays are to families, and to mark United Nations International Family Day on 15 May, their experts suggest some fantastic, family-friendly sites for adventure, culture, beaches and even…a digital detox.

Pitchup.com founder Dan Yates said: “The UN International Day of Family reminds us just how precious time spent as a family is to all of us and those childhood memories of fun and freedom last a lifetime. What could be better than a few days away in the UK to enjoy time together as a family?”

Reclaim the kids!

iPhones, tablets and instant messaging are all out at Atlantic Surf Pods, a friendly, family-run luxury glamping site in Bude on the north Cornish coast. Set in 26 acres of farmland, the site is primarily ‘off grid’, which makes for a very peaceful and relaxing stay – once all digital devices have been wrestled from the children – just a mile from the beautiful surfing beaches of Bude. Families can relax on a giant outdoor beanbag, visit the farm animals or spend an afternoon in the shell-craft studio decorating picture frames or mirrors. There is a kids’ play area and even a ball game area on site. Bude town centre, Stratton, and Marhamchurch are only a 20-minute stroll away.

Price: from £69 per night based on two adults and two children sharing.

Shakespeare – without the drama

This year marks the 450th anniversary of the birth of The Bard and Wootton Park, in the heart of Shakespeare’s Warwickshire, is a dream for families: everything from bedding to bathrobes, towels to hairdryers is provided in cosy camping pods. It’s a little ‘hamlet’ in itself, with a lovely garden, a dining area, and yummy bacon baps available for breakfast. All the Shakespearean attractions in Stratford-upon-Avon are close by, as are Warwick Castle and the Cotswolds.

Price: From £100 per night for two adults and two children.

The Eden Project and clean beaches

Seaview International Holiday Park, at the gateway to the Roseland Peninsula on the south coast of Cornwall, with views of the sea and nearby Dodman Point, has over 200 touring pitches all with electric hook-ups. There’s an outdoor pool and terraces, large games areas and playpark, shop, café, dog exercise paddock, a laundrette and campers' kitchen. The Eden Project is less than 10 miles away, as are the National Trust attractions of Trelissick Garden and St Anthony Head. The quality of beaches in this area is fantastic, with Gorran Haven and Polstreath both within three miles of the holiday park, rated ‘excellent’ by the European Environment Agency.

Price: £13 per night for a family of four staying on an electric pitch.

Old fashioned family fun in the countryside

The Hop Farm at Tonbridge in Kent, is a large camping and touring park set in 500 acres of open fields and woodland with grass and hardstanding pitches and optional electric. Right next to the Hop Farm Family Park, which is free to enter, the site offers an outdoor adventure play area, crazy golf and other rides and attractions. The River Medway flows through the park, where families can try fishing and kayaking, and the farm also boasts the Oast Village, the biggest collection of oast (old hop kilning) houses in the world.

Price: From £19.50 per night for four people on a grass pitch.

Four-legged friend family holidays

If family includes a four-legged friend, Woodland Park Camping Huts in Shropshire is perfect: tiny, peaceful and made up of just five snug camping huts set around a woodland pond - far away from the stresses of everyday life - dogs are made very welcome. Children will love trying to spot badgers, squirrels, foxes, kestrels and buzzards, as well as sitting around the campfire listening out for hooting owls. Accommodation is in huts with bunk beds, with a picnic bench overlooking the water.

Price: From £40 per night for four people.

A holiday on a working farm

West Wales Camping Pods are located on a 50-acre working farm on the picturesque border of Pembrokeshire and Carmarthenshire. The pods can each accommodate two adults and three children and they offer a patio with a barbecue chiminea. The sweet-toothed can visit Pemberton's Chocolate Farm in Llanboidy, while there are four European Environment Agency (EEA)-rated ‘excellent’ beaches close by and plenty of exciting walks along coastal paths. Alternatively, families can go paintballing at Cenarth or wander around the quirky shops at Narberth.

Price: From £45 per night for five people in a camping pod.

Keep connected – for those who must send a selfie

Heathside Caravans, Suffolk, only four miles inland from the coast, on the outskirts of Wenhaston, offers deluxe pods with wifi, perfect for those who simply have to be online 24-7 and who want to post photos of their holiday in real-time. What’s more, prices here stay fixed throughout the year, so it’s an affordable school holiday option. Those who can tear themselves away from the digital world can get up close with nature, hire bikes, go horse riding or visit the Africa Alive animal adventure park at Kessingland - all of which provide excellent selfie backdrops!
