Reel in the catch of the day this bank holiday weekend

Aug 23 2011 Posted by Lewis Shields

Want to make the most of the last days of summer? Long days, warm weather and waterways teeming with life make ideal conditions for angling novices and pros alike to land the catch of the day. Plenty of camping and caravan sites are now offering guests the exclusive use of fishing lakes and stretches of river, making it even easier for budding fishermen to cast away. Pitchup.com recommends the best spots for angling this August and September.

1)   Kingsmead Centre, Cullompton, Devon

A cosy family-run site on the banks of two picturesque on-site fishing lakes, the famed Valley Lake and Woodland Lake are exclusive to site residents.  These lakes offer some of the top fishing grounds in the South West with many specimen size fish and day catches of 40lbs common! After a hard day’s fishing guests can reward themselves with dinner in the nearby ‘Merry Harriers’, Devon’s Dining Pub of the Year 2011. Grass pitches from £10 a night and fishing for up to two people priced at £5 a night.

2)   Meadow Lakes, St Austell, Cornwall

Visitors to Meadow Lakes will be spoilt for choice with four fishing lakes, generously stocked with coarse species including perch, ghost carp, mirror carp, bream, roach, rudd, tent and eels. There’s also a heated outdoor swimming pool to enjoy the last summer sun. Motorhome, tent and tourer pitches from only £20 per night, with electric hook-up option also available.

3)   Hooton Lodge, Rotherham, South Yorkshire

Say goodbye to soggy tents and nights tossing and turning after a long day fishing as Hooton Lodge has camping pods and twenty newly built fishing pegs along the riverbank that make for a truly comfortable fishing weekend. The pods can accommodate up to five people, and each has its own decking area with the option of hiring a fire pit where the catch of the day can be baked on the embers. Camping pods priced from £40 per night and a ticket for fishing is £4 per day.

4)   Cefn Mably Lakes, South Wales

Nestled in the Welsh Hills, Cefn Mably Lakes is ideal for anglers who enjoy spending day and night by the water.  There are nine different coarse and carp lakes across the park, including a match pond. The site offers comfortable “logpods” right on the water’s edge, so keen fishermen can get up and go! Nearby are several charismatic country inns for visitors to choose from and it’s only a 15 minute drive to the many restaurants, shops and attractions that Cardiff city has to offer. Pods priced from £30 per night with fishing from dawn until dusk at £5 per day.

5)   Wimbleball Lake Campsite, Dulverton, Somerset

Wimbleball Lake is a haven for fishermen offering long stretches of shoreline, secluded inlets and tranquil waters filled with fat rainbow trout. Although only fly fishing is permitted, there is the option to fish from both boats and banks. If that wasn’t enough, the lake also has an excellent variety of watersports (sailing, windsurfing, kayaking and rowing). For those wanting to keep dry there are well designed trails for cycling and hiking, and a playground to keep the children busy while you enjoy a delicious cream tea in the café. Pitches from £13 per night.

6)   Stithians Lake Campsite, Redruth, Cornwall

Enjoy impressive views of Stithians Lake from your pitch as fisherman cast out hopefully from boat or bank for large brown and rainbow trout. Stithian’s Lake covers 275 acres, so there’s plenty of space around the site for picnics, as well as a pirate-themed children’s playground and walking trails around the lake. Watersport enthusiasts will be in their element here with windsurfing, sailing, rowing and kayaking on offer. Pitches from £13 per night.

7)   Tattershall Lakes Country Park, Tattershall, Lincolnshire

This high-end park offers an introductory fishing course that is perfect for adults and children alike while seasoned anglers can cast off into three well stocked fishing lakes that cater to any level. Bored of fishing? No problem there are many other activities taking place across the 325 acres of parkland, from gold-panning and bubbleology for the kids, to golf and jet-skis for the bigger kids. On Sunday evenings, guests can wind down to a fire-lit outdoor cinema screening, including a barbeque, popcorn and complimentary marshmallow toasting. Standard pitches from just £2 and fishing day tickets priced at £5 per person.
