  • Fully equipped summer kitchen and communal dining area; swimming pool
Heading down south or looking for a rural hideaway in the Vienne region? Booking a stay at Camping La Petite Houmée places you on a smallholding atop a hill in the Vonne Valley, less than five minutes’ drive from the quiet village of Curzay-sur-Vonne. Surrounded by fields this pretty spot may be, but it’s also speedy to access, being only 15 minutes from exit 30 of the A10 motorway. Pitches are tucked away among the trees, with plenty of space between each one for extra privacy. Handy facilities include a fully equipped camping kitchen, so you can prepare food and – should you feel like mingling with fellow guests – eat in the communal covered dining area. If alfresco cooking is part of your holiday plan, you may like to know there are wood- and gas-powered barbecues on hand too. Travelling with family? Rent a couple of bikes (one has a child’s seat) from site owners Céline and Karine, and head off on an expedition into the Vienne countryside. Outdoor games are available for your downtime back on site, and you can then cool off in the raised pool (open in July and August). Finally, should you need it, wifi is available near the kitchen, while everywhere on site has decent 4G coverage. And if you’re keen on a historic fact or two, you’ll be intrigued to learn that a Gallo-Roman villa once stood on this peaceful hilltop, and that the soft-stone central farmhouse dates from the 17th century.

Local attractions

Hikers listen up, because five walking trails begin in pretty Curzay-sur-Vonne (five minutes’ drive). The village also hosts the enchanting Musée du Vitrail, where you can see jewel-coloured stained glass in anything from medieval to contemporary styles; if this sparks your creativity, book glass-making courses at the neighbouring Atelier du Vitrail workshop. When teenagers are travelling with you, Futuroscope (45 minutes) will probably top your list of potential trips; expect to spend a day working your way around its fast-paced musical shows and spectacular 4D immersive adventures. Closer to home base, younger kids will be just as appreciative of the chance to cuddle donkeys and llamas at La Belle Anée in Jazeneuil (10 minutes). Mash up a bit of culture with more family days out by heading to the Gallo-Roman site at Sanxay (also 10 minutes) to see the baths and remains of the amphitheatre. If you’re visiting in summer, look out for the open-air concerts that are frequently held at the site.
