  • Wild woodland camping on a peaceful site close to beaches in Suffolk
  • A 20-minute drive to Southwold, and 15 minutes to Dunwich beach
  • Weekly communal foodie nights around a firepit on a dark skies site
With just a handful of spacious grass pitches under a canopy of trees, Sunset and Stars Campsite is a place where you can sign up for an almost-wild camping experience. Close to Saxmundham in Suffolk, this peaceful, off-grid spot is both family- and dog-friendly – but please keep your canine chums under control and always clear up after them. Use of the Shower Shack is complimentary, and hot water for washing (and washing up) is always available. There’s a small charge for wood if you spark up the firepit (there’s a pub within walking distance if you can’t face cooking), and the owners are happy for you to pick veg from the cottage garden and fruit from the orchard – with prior permission. If you’re feeling sociable, on arrival you can book up for a foodie night around a communal firepit at no cost to you – just bring your favourite tipple and the owners do the rest. Parking is available by the pitches while you’re setting up, but you'll then need to move your vehicle to the parking area provided, to ensure safety and calm on site. And as this site is all about sunset views and starry skies (it’s all in the name…), hopefully you’ll get lucky and have a couple of clear nights when you can glimpse the Milky Way twinkling far above.

Non-electric forest floor tent or campervan pitch

Liked: The location (close to RSPB Minsmere) and the site (under trees but with views across the fields). It's a lovely campsite and the owners are lovely people. They go out of their way to make everyone welcome and, when the weather threw everything it had at us, they made sure that we could drive in an out of the site by laying carpet tiles (!) and lit a big fire in one of the fire pits. It's amazing how you get a psychological boost from that in your camper van, even when it's 20 yards away!

Disliked: The weather, but our hosts couldn't help that and did everything they could to make everyone comfortable despite it.

From the manager: WE do love a review!!! Thanks so much fort taking the time to review us. It means alot and we are always happy to work on our weeknesses and strengths. The firepits are so relaxing and take you a world away from daily life. Many thanks and hope to see you again Janene & Paul

Non-electric forest floor tent or campervan pitch

Liked: Lovely peaceful woodland setting. Convenient location for the Suffolk coast - Aldeburgh, Southwold etc nearby. A very small family-run site. Exceptionally friendly. I liked the thoughtful details eg corkscrew and tin opener provided by the wash-up area, sanitary products in the loo, and some toys for kids to play with. The owners kindly let us help ourselves to apples and plums from their orchard. Would recommend. Would return.

Non-electric forest floor tent pitch

Liked: The owners of the site were friendly and were happy to help when they were there. Everything was very clean. The location is good for exploring that part of the coast, good for cycling and there are some lovely pubs nearby. If you like sitting around a fire in the evening, there are plenty of fire pits to use.

Disliked: It was never really quiet. The road is very near so traffic is noticeable. We were there in August so farmers were working (with hay-making vehicles) in adjacent fields until early hours of the morning. The facilities were a bit cramped but they were adequate for the potential number of pitches. The site is in a young woodland, so it can be a bit gloomy, there are no views unless you peer over the hedge. We were in a tent, the surface of the pitch was bare earth, quite compacted. When it rained the water did not soak away quickly, puddles formed, and some surface water seeped into the living area of our tent.

From the manager: Thank you so much for your review all points duly noted. Unfortunately we can not always be present on site, however we are always there morning and evenings, and always contactable by phone, and never far away, as we do have day jobs also. I hope you had the opportunity to light a fire as they are rather fabulous. To address your dislikes, all i can say is this, we can never determine the date or month or harvest in any way. the campsite is in the countryside, and although by a road, the noise of farm traffic is something beyond our control. Unfortunately yesterday morning 25/8/23 we had a massive down pour of Torrential rain on hard ground so yes puddles will develop quickly and it does not dismiss quickly. We can not fight natures ways. The wood land has been planted since 2000 by the previous owners of the property, the canopy is light and allows for a cool entry on hot days, and yes can be shady, but we advertise we are woodland site. We are saddened to hear that natures ways are not for you, and we sincerely hope that your next stay away camping is something that suits your needs more. Regards Janene & Paul

Non-electric forest floor tent or campervan pitch

Liked: What a beautiful spot! Peaceful, serene, woodland setting with eco friendly amenities. Pitches are a good distance apart and lots of helpful toiletries consumables available to use if you dont have yours to hand. Considerate host and gorgeous sunsets. Loved it! Also firepits made this site really special.

Disliked: Only gripe was possibly hedge was a bit high so missed a bit of the beautiful view and setting sun. Not much to complain about really!

From the manager: Such a fab review! thanks so much for taking timeout to comment on our site and for the great photos. The hedge is so annoying... but after last years fires due to the heat, we have to love the view, but safety first at present. Hope to see you again soon. Janene & Paul

Non-electric forest floor tent or campervan pitch

Liked: Good spot for visiting this part of Suffolk, the village and pub are only a short walk, and loads of good footpaths and cycling opportunities. The site is as described, it's basic but well done and we didn't expect any more from it. The hosts were very nice and helpful, I would recommend this site for those looking for a basic but quiet place to stay for a couple of days.

Local attractions

The scenic Suffolk Coast and Heaths Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty is at your disposal, plus this bucolic little spot is handy for the antique shops and art galleries of trendy Aldeburgh (15 minutes’ drive) as well as the indie boutiques, wooden pier and cool cafés of Southwold (20 minutes). If you want to brush up on your history credentials, tour the Anglo-Saxon treasure trove at National Trust-owned Sutton Hoo (30 minutes) – as featured in the film 'The Dig'. The mighty Norman hilltop castle at Framlingham (20 minutes) is open for rampart walks and lots of medieval-themed family events. Intriguing Dunwich (10 minutes) was once a coastal town, but now lies firmly inland, with superb family hiking on surrounding heathland. There’s also plenty of walking to be done at RSPB Minsmere, where you can keep your eyes peeled for marsh harriers and avocets. If that doesn’t wear the kids (and the dogs) out, head for the sandy expanse at Dunwich beach (both 15 minutes) for a serious run-around in bracing sea air.
