  • Wild woodland camping on a peaceful site close to beaches in Suffolk
  • A 20-minute drive to Southwold, and 15 minutes to Dunwich beach
  • Weekly communal foodie nights around a firepit on a dark skies site
With just a handful of spacious grass pitches under a canopy of trees, Sunset and Stars Campsite is a place where you can sign up for an almost-wild camping experience. Close to Saxmundham in Suffolk, this peaceful, off-grid spot is both family- and dog-friendly ā€“ but please keep your canine chums under control and always clear up after them. Use of the Shower Shack is complimentary, and hot water for washing (and washing up) is always available. Thereā€™s a small charge for wood if you spark up the firepit (thereā€™s a pub within walking distance if you canā€™t face cooking), and the owners are happy for you to pick veg from the cottage garden and fruit from the orchard ā€“ with prior permission. If youā€™re feeling sociable, on arrival you can book up for a foodie night around a communal firepit at no cost to you ā€“ just bring your favourite tipple and the owners do the rest. Parking is available by the pitches while youā€™re setting up, but you'll then need to move your vehicle to the parking area provided, to ensure safety and calm on site. And as this site is all about sunset views and starry skies (itā€™s all in the nameā€¦), hopefully youā€™ll get lucky and have a couple of clear nights when you can glimpse the Milky Way twinkling far above.

Unpowered forest floor tent or campervan site

Liked: Peaceful. Meet and greet with good tour.very clean bathroom areas. Electric socket to charge devices. Complimentary washing up liquid soap and toilet roll. Owners friendly and helpful

Disliked: Difficult to locate but owner gave good directions when we rang. Lack of consistent hot water in shower Pitch too small if we wanted to bring an awning to accommodate whole family

From the manager: Thankyou so much for your review, we do love feedback. We are pleased you loved our site, with regards to the water that normally only happens when the holding tank is low, we do ask all campers to refil and to check it is filled after showering. A campervan and awning would fit with room to spare, if however you also pitch a tent, as you did instead then you would need two pitches as the Large Campervan/Tent pitches are only designed for one or the other not for both. Fabulous to hear that you would be happy to visit again Many thanks Janene and Paul

Benny the bell tent

Liked: Thank you Janene and Paul for a wonderful few days staying in Benny the bell tent. You were so informative in your orientation of your lovely campsite and functionality of it all. It was wonderful to see my two eating sā€™mores round the fire and playing with sticks whilst listening to the sound of natureā€¦it was so relaxing. The comfort of the bell tent was amazing and I loved my cosy double bed ā€¦it didnā€™t feel like camping. We would love to come back for more. Iā€™d recommend to anyone wanting some peace and quiet.

Disliked: Leaving school nest and stars was my only dislike!!

Benny the bell tent

Liked: The bell tent and the siting of the tent. The quiet and all the mod cons of camping without the hassle.

Disliked: The rest of the campsite was very shaded by trees

Recommend to friends Visit again

From the manager: Thank you for your review and comments, We are pleased that you enjoyed the position of the Bell tent, it does enjoy a sunny spot in its own garden and meadow away from our Woodland campsite. It was a shame we had so much rain during your visit, during poor weather and dirty shoes in the toilet area is hard to keep on top of.. We noted that you gave us one point out of 5 for Child friendliness, how could we improve on this? what did your 13 year old find we were missing? we always aim to improve form the feedback we receive. We hope you had a safe onward journey. Janene and Paul

Unpowered forest floor tent or campervan site

Liked: The location (close to RSPB Minsmere) and the site (under trees but with views across the fields). It's a lovely campsite and the owners are lovely people. They go out of their way to make everyone welcome and, when the weather threw everything it had at us, they made sure that we could drive in an out of the site by laying carpet tiles (!) and lit a big fire in one of the fire pits. It's amazing how you get a psychological boost from that in your camper van, even when it's 20 yards away!

Disliked: The weather, but our hosts couldn't help that and did everything they could to make everyone comfortable despite it.

Recommend to friends Visit again

From the manager: WE do love a review!!! Thanks so much fort taking the time to review us. It means alot and we are always happy to work on our weeknesses and strengths. The firepits are so relaxing and take you a world away from daily life. Many thanks and hope to see you again Janene & Paul

Unpowered forest floor tent or campervan site

Liked: Lovely peaceful woodland setting. Convenient location for the Suffolk coast - Aldeburgh, Southwold etc nearby. A very small family-run site. Exceptionally friendly. I liked the thoughtful details eg corkscrew and tin opener provided by the wash-up area, sanitary products in the loo, and some toys for kids to play with. The owners kindly let us help ourselves to apples and plums from their orchard. Would recommend. Would return.

Local attractions

The scenic Suffolk Coast and Heaths Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty is at your disposal, plus this bucolic little spot is handy for the antique shops and art galleries of trendy Aldeburgh (15 minutesā€™ drive) as well as the indie boutiques, wooden pier and cool cafĆ©s of Southwold (20 minutes). If you want to brush up on your history credentials, tour the Anglo-Saxon treasure trove at National Trust-owned Sutton Hoo (30 minutes) ā€“ as featured in the film 'The Dig'. The mighty Norman hilltop castle at Framlingham (20 minutes) is open for rampart walks and lots of medieval-themed family events. Intriguing Dunwich (10 minutes) was once a coastal town, but now lies firmly inland, with superb family hiking on surrounding heathland. Thereā€™s also plenty of walking to be done at RSPB Minsmere, where you can keep your eyes peeled for marsh harriers and avocets. If that doesnā€™t wear the kids (and the dogs) out, head for the sandy expanse at Dunwich beach (both 15 minutes) for a serious run-around in bracing sea air.
