La Rivière local town of Les Eyzies-de-Tayac-Sireuil in the Périgord Noir is a UNESCO World Heritage Site for many an old attraction, and the area as a whole has ancient sites galore, like the stalagmites and stalactite-filled cavern of the Grotte du Grand-Roc and the prehistoric paintings of the fab subterranean network making up the Lascaux Caves.

On-site facilities at La Rivière include a heated swimming pool and a paddling pool, a pétanque court, tennis and volleyball courts, ping pong tables, a library, a grocery shop, and free wifi in reception. Takeaway meals are available too.

Evening entertainment, kids' shows and rock-climbing excursions (this is rocky land) are organised in summer by the friendly campsite team.

Nice site but it’s incredibly noisy at night- 10/13/2018

Nice pitches , clean modern washrooms , kind and helpful manager , pleasant cafe

    Disliked:

Rudeness of some staff - we turned up to swim 10 minutes after pool was due to open and the truculent maintenance guy started chucking his tools around - no apology from duty manageress. The site is surrounded by cliffs which make a huge natural echo chamber and when the late night partying in les Eyzies dies away in the small hours and the mobile home dwellers have returned the camions start trundling though - we were like the walking dead after 3 nights of this and had to move . Don’t stay if you don’t have to.

Great location, near to village and river. So many places to visit locally, so stayed an extra 2 nights. Hot, roomy, clean showers, friendly helpful staff. Even managed to borrow a couple of spanners when scooter broke down. Snacks on site excellent, and swimming pool as well. Fresh bread every day.

The staff were friendly and welcoming. The pool area was clean and the setting is beautiful. The shop was well stocked with essentials and the bread/ croissants etc were not over priced. The children (aged 9 and 12) really liked the swimming pool and the playground.

    Disliked:

On our pitch (39) the electric hook up point was quite a long way away. It was also shady pitch which was quite good in the full hear of the sun but took a little while to warm up!

Family friendly, lots of fantastic sights to see in local area. Very Friendly staff. Toilets cleaned three times in 24hours. Easy distance to restaurants and river. Stunning scenery and area. Wonderful croissants and pain in the am for sale at a very good price and a glass of vin blank €1.50 which was lovely. Free WiFi in bar area only. British speaking staff and helpful with local area. Lovely pool especially in the morning but in August got over busy for size of pool in the afternoon. Not much natural shade but has about 6 parasols around.

    Disliked:

Noisy young families on site who didn’t parent their young children, using the toilet block as a playground from about 7 to 10pm nightly. Pitches a triangle shape so slightly awkward and close to next pitch and hedges sparse in many places. Restaurant not serving full evening meals which is a shame but snacks and chips which is convenient to accompany own bbq. Wanted a pitch close to pool and toilets which was great BUT noisy but not necessarily due to staff but other parents at the time ,possibly down far end much quieter. Foot bath in pool area not clean. Campers very inconsiderate with toilet block and didn’t keep it very clean despite efforts of cleaning staff

the geographical area the campsite was on.

    Disliked:

No welcome from Staff at all. Not shown to our pitch and had very little presence at the site other than in the reception.

The photographs on the site are more appealing than it actually was. Quite shabby and a basic lack of interest shown to the property.

Site entrance is very tight to manoeuvre through.

Food in the Restaurant/cafe was acceptable but there was only very limited choice and I mean very Limited.

There was no soap at the toilet sinks to wash your hands after using the toilet with very limited toilets. The ramp to the toilets was made of metal so made an awful noise when accessing this area.

There were a lot of families on holiday and couples but the site felt very congested as the pitches were not very large and it felt that you were on top of everyone. We met a number of lovely people who were leaving early as they found the site too noisy. I would not personally recommend this campsite however the village was a delight and easy to walk to.

This was a great, quiet little site that we all really enjoyed staying at. The site is next to the river and only a short stroll away from the local village. The pitches are a good size and mainly shaded which was much needed in the 30+ temperatures we had. The pool was good with plenty of sun loungers and there was a nice bar overlooking it. We hired canoes for an afternoon on the river from the company right next to the site (10% discount given for guests) which was a great trip. The site is quiet, but there can be some noise from events in the town that echo in the valley a bit on the weekend - nothing that would spoil your stay though. We would certainly return here.

Local attractions

Several old castles like the Château de Castelnaud and the Château de Beynac dot the countryside of this part of France, along with colourful and comely little villages such as La Roque Gageac, above the Dordogne river and one of the Les Plus Beaux Villages de France.

Smashing Bergerac should be near the top of any list of day tripping options for the region around Camping La Rivière, for a whole heap of things including its medieval streets, tasty tuck and famed wine. And its town museum, statue museum, tobacco museum and riverside wine house with exhibition on the history of wine growing…

Deeply recommended are the caves and Paleolithic paintings of Lascaux Caves, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. You'll likely also dig the Grotte du Grand Roc/Cave of the Big Rock, and the National Prehistory Museum, both back in town at Les Eyzies-de-Tayac-Sireuil.
