  • Llyn Peninsula site for families and couples below Moel y Gest hill
  • A five-minute drive to Black Rock Sands beach and 15 to Snowdonia
  • Within 10 minutes' drive of Porthmadog and 20 of Portmeirion
It'd be tough finding a better located north Wales site for walking than Tyddyn Adi Caravan Park on the edge of the Llyn Peninsula in Gwynedd (although there's lots to be said about touring the stunning region attempting such a feat). The site (for families and couples only) is at the bottom of the 850-foot Moel y Gest hill for roams among the rocky scenery and a half-hour wander to the scenic sweep of Black Rock Sands beach where you can join the Wales-wide coastal path. Hike along to Criccieth (or drive for 20 minutes by car) on this trail and detour up to the village castle sitting on a mound with excellent views out over the ocean; swerving in the opposite direction along Ceredigion Bay gets you a look at Harlech Castle (30 minutes’ drive) and its long sandy beach instead. Tyddyn Adi Caravan Park is also 15 minutes from Snowdonia National Park – home to the highest peak in Wales if you’d like a serious stroll – with lots of low-key paths leading to one of the 100 or so lakes for amateur amblers too. Liking the sound of an especially laidback lope? The harbour at Porthmadog is 10 minutes’ drive away; this is also the place to go for a decent selection of shops, supermarkets, restaurants and pubs as well as access to regional buses and the Welsh Highland Railway serving other top tourist spots like Caernarfon, Beddgelert and the Aberglaslyn Pass. At the end of a day stretching the legs, the site’s a restful place to return to with its roomy, level grass pitches. Amenities include toilet facilities and showers as well as a washing-up room and a laundry service.

Liked lovely friendly helpful service from beau & the man that both worked in the food hut

Disliked We stayed at this campsite over the weekend as part of a group and unfortunately had a very disappointing experience.

The biggest issue was the attitude of the owner. We found her to be extremely rude when speaking to guests, including our group, and it created an uncomfortable atmosphere throughout our stay. Rather than feeling welcomed, we felt like we were constantly being watched and spoken to as though we had done something wrong.

One particular incident involved our BBQ. We were told we were breaking the campsite rules, despite using a raised BBQ that was fully supervised. The campsite’s own Facebook page clearly states that raised BBQs are permitted and that only disposable BBQs placed directly on the ground are not allowed. We had followed those rules, yet were still spoken to in a way that was completely unnecessary and unprofessional.

Sadly, our experience didn’t improve. The cleaner was also incredibly rude, raising her voice at both parents and children on several occasions. We felt stared at whenever she walked across the field, and her behaviour made us feel unwelcome and uncomfortable for the duration of our stay.

As a group, we spent a considerable amount of money staying here, but instead of enjoying a relaxing weekend, we were left feeling like we didn’t belong. Good customer service starts with making guests feel welcome, and unfortunately that was completely lacking.

The one shining light was Beau, the owner’s daughter. She was friendly, approachable and genuinely helpful throughout our stay. She and the man working in the food hut were a credit to the campsite and the only members of staff who made us feel welcome - her mother the camp owner or ‘the boss’ as she referred to herself should take a leap out of her daughters book.

It’s such a shame because the campsite itself has potential, but until the way guests are treated improves, we wouldn’t return or recommend it to others.

Liked Grill House was great, food was tasty and the young girl on reception was lovely. Good location for the beach & modern shower block which was kept clean

Disliked No facilities for children ie a park or field to play sports. Wifi signal very weak in the fields.
I would never rate a site so low, but we were so disappointed with the attitude we received from the owner in regard to BBQs and we had followed the rules given to us on check in via a leaflet. I believe we were not the only family to receive the same abuse. We spent over £2k on 3 x pods and 4 x tent pitches for a 3 night stay, and we were treated so poorly. All we wanted was to get the kids off their phones for a weekend, play sports and do quizzes etc and we were treated like scum off the owner & then the cleaner threatened one of the Mums whilst we were playing rounders and continued to stare us out the rest of the stay. Like I say, overall good but I wouldn't recommend to families

Liked Facilities nice and clean

Disliked Owners rude attitude. She managed to upset 3 different sets of campers Saturday evening. Accused of us having a fire because we placed a BBQ to cook tea inside a fire pit to protect the grass on site, she then said she would see me at the gates in the morning, I was due to be staying another day.

Camping pod (hot tub)

Liked The pod was lovely, had almost everything you needed, bed was comfy, kitchen was well equipped and the views and location was nothing short of amazing.

Disliked Hot tub needed privacy rather than being open for all to see, the cutlery in the pod was on its way out and there was only 1 fork. A bug net for the doors would be great, as it was scorching hot, having the doors open to let a breeze in also allowed all the wildlife in too.

Camping pod (hot tub)

Liked Loved our stay here in the pod
You can see it's got a lot of potential with upgrades
Toilet/shower block clean and modern
Two young girls who seem to run everything are lovely
If this park had a wee shop on it and a bar or pop up food trucks to come on site it would be amazing.

Disliked Notjing

Local attractions

With handsome villages, historic centres and adventure sports to seek out as well, there’s also more to do in north Wales than walk. One of the most well-known settlements of the lot is a bit further from Porthmadog at 20 minutes' drive from the park: the colourful Italian-style village of Portmeirion is famed for being both the setting of the cult ‘60s TV series The Prisoner and the early September art and music Festival N°6. For history, the Llechwedd slate caverns are 35 minutes’ drive away; here you can learn about the area’s mining culture on a tour before bouncing about on the underground trampolines. Zipwires are also available to have a go at in this centre for a little more thrill-seeking…
