  • Peaceful rural park in St Asaph
  • Four miles from the beaches and funfairs of Rhyl and Prestatyn
  • Excellently-kept amenities and plenty of tourist info on site
Did you know that - thanks to the Diamond Jubilee of good Queen Lilibet - that UK got three brand new cities in 2012? One of the newbies, St Asaph in Denbighshire, is home to just three thousand people if you’re curious about this tiny gem, come to Penisar Mynydd Caravan Park, where you’ll be perfectly placed to join in any right royal knees-up that might still be going on in St Asaph, and to visit the classic Welsh coastal resorts of Prestatyn and Rhyl. Penisar Mynydd Caravan Park is a peaceful rural site with well-kept pitches and with amenities kept to high standards by the friendly helpful team. There’s a great range of tourist information available on site to help you make the most of the local area. You’ll find a handful of shops, including a convenience store, butcher and chemist in the nearby village of Dyserth (don’t miss out on a stop at the stunning Dyserth waterfalls while you’re there).

Power optional grass tent campsite (large)

Liked Reception staff were great checked us in very fast and shown us where the facilities were. The grounds are immaculate, the tent pitches are perfect, nice and level and there is plenty of room, we used a large 9 birth tent and had loads of room. The toilet, showers and washing up areas/facilities were pristine for our whole stay.

Disliked Nothing at all.

Primitive grass tent campsite

Liked Facilities were spotless and well-maintained, toilets felt professionally built, sinks were clean, and the shower water temperature was perfect.

Quiet, family-friendly atmosphere. Likely due to the site’s rules on group sizes and single-sex bookings, it felt peaceful and safe.

Staff were attentive and helpful when approached.

Grounds were mostly flat and kept clean, making it easy to set up and move around.

Disliked Poor clarity around the electric hook-up rules. We booked an “electrical optional” pitch assuming we could use our junction box, only to find we still had to pay an additional £6 per night for their hook-up point, we thought the additional charge was to rent a junction box from them but no. and when you do pay the extra to get the electricity you still need to bring your own junction box as they don't supply you with one. luckily we had one so it wasn't a problem but the lack of clarity on what the "electrical hook up meant" was a surprise extra charge. *we booked 2 spots, one with electric and one without, i know I'm writing this review on the spot without electric but i didn't feel like writing 2 sperate reviews*

The “optional extras” quickly push the price up things like extra for a gazebo, pup tent, or even an awning are charged per night, whereas most other sites include these in the base price or don’t charge at all. Once you add these, the site is on the pricier side for what you get. espetially if you have a couple of friends who decide to visit for a day as they charge you for the car, and also per head for everyone coming.

Remote location with very tight roads leading to it, fine if you have a car and know the area, but risky if you don’t. We had multiple near misses with oncoming vehicles.

very weak to no cellular connection, They do offer Wi-Fi that is charged per device. We only found out when leaving so maybe a mention that this is a service that they have would of been helpful.

Tent pitches are pushed to the centre of the camping ground, leaving the sheltered campers get the edges which are more wind protected. Our pitch was freezing and windy the first night, making it hard to sleep. Even when we asked to move, we were told it was fully booked despite seeing several spots remain empty. i feel priotising tents being placed around the edges so they are sheltered from the harsher weather would be a very welcome change.

Local attractions

For families, the safe sandy beaches, funfairs and plentiful tourist attractions of Rhyl and Prestatyn - just four miles away - will no doubt be top of the list. The attractive seaside resorts of Llandudno and Colwyn Bay are also within an easy drive. Fishing fans can try the trout farm ten minutes up the road from Penisar Mynydd Caravan Park, or head into St Asaph to fish the River Elwy; walkers can saunter through a superb selection of scenery, including nearby Offa’s Dyke, or drive to Snowdonia National Park and hike the mountains and lakes; and golfers will also find that this area suits them to a tee, with a huge choice of courses including Caerwys, Meliden, Rhuddlan, Rhyl, Holywell and Prestatyn. Other top picks for sightseeing include the village of Betws-Y-Coed and the neighbouring Swallow Falls; the imposing remains of Rhuddlan Castle; and seventeenth century Bodrhyddan Hall, where a 3,000-year-old mummy lurks among the armour and period furniture...
