  • Family-friendly Powys campsite on the banks of the River Wye
  • Hay-on Wye and Offa’s Dyke Path 10 minutes’ drive; Hereford 40 minutes
  • Kayak and canoe hire at the adjacent activity centre; café on site
Looking for an action-packed outdoor break with lots of high-octane watery fun to be had? A stay at River Wye Campsite puts you right on the banks of the river at Glasbury-on-Wye. Once there, you can hire canoes or kayaks to paddle downstream, go gorge walking along the Wye, or join in archery and axe-throwing sessions (at an extra cost) at the adjacent activity centre. No problem if your tastes lean more towards culture rather than sporting action, as the campsite is 10 minutes’ drive from Hay-on Wye, making it a clever base for visiting the famed ‘book town’ – especially during the the annual Hay Festival of Literature and Arts, held in late May and early June. Handy on-site facilities include a shower block with plenty of hot water (great for easing tired muscles after a day kayaking on the Wye), a washing-up area and plenty of parking space, either in the car park or next to your tent. Keen to upgrade your alfresco cooking skills? You’re welcome to use free-standing barbecues but please ensure they are raised off the grass to prevent any damage. Packs of kindling can be bought on site, and there’s a covered seating area for communal picnics. If you’d rather someone else took care of the catering, pick up soft drinks, ice cream and tempting cakes in the Paddlers Rest Café – you can order full English breakfasts in there too. Well-behaved dogs are welcome to join in the fun, and there are woodland walks direct from the pitches to keep them exercised too. The owners ask that they are kept on leads while on site, please.

Primitive grass and earth tent campsite

Liked: Lovely, friendly hosts! Clean toilets and showers. Lovely cafe. Close to lovely walks and towns. Lovely atmosphere with the street food and bar options. Plenty of space to pitch up.

Disliked: A couple of groups were playing music and being loud past midnight, just perhaps somebody around to ensure other groups are being respectful of other campers! Not the sites faults though!!!

Primitive grass and earth tent campsite

Liked: Such a friendly environment, we got there just as they were finishing up a family day, but they were all very welcoming and chatty. They even opened up their nicer showers for us to use after a few days wild camping, it was really appreciated. Felt very safe as two young women camping alone, would stay here again.

Primitive grass and earth tent campsite

Liked: Plenty of activities to do whilst there. Onsite facilities were good - shop, cafe and (hot) showers that were cleaned regularly. Friendly staff that are always keen to help.

Disliked: When there was a problem with the toilet/shower block the alternative block in the main house wasn't as welcoming - the showers were cold and wasn't quite as clean - the toilet/shower block being out of order was beyond their control though and was clear to see they had tried to do what they could to best accommodate the situation

Primitive grass and earth tent campsite

Liked: Dog friendly, live music, cafe, lovely outdoor seating area, pizza and activities around the campsite! Spacious and sheltered under trees.

Disliked: The showers were cold and very outdated! The hooks were all broken with nowhere to hang clothes. They didn’t feel particularly clean with black mould in the cubicles. It rained and it became a mud slide for cars! A matting needed placing down to help with the cars realistically. Could not find the drinking tap! No clear signage, ran in to multiple people asking if knew were the tap was, they also couldn’t locate it! Personally feel there should be 2 taps located at each end of the campsite. We ended up buying bottled water. Although we asked where the tap is we really could not locate it.

Primitive grass and earth tent campsite

Liked: Great environment with trees and a river not so far

Disliked: - lack of communication from staff as the showers had cold water and did not informed us or solve the issues - issues with infrastructure as old (doors not locking, cold shower, unusable toilets..) - spend the whole weekend with nobody cleaning the toilets or showers - issues with bins, were full for days - one sink only to wash our dishes for the whole campsite (was inaccessible for a whole day and evening as they play a band in front of the door)

Local attractions

For riverside rambles with the kids and dogs, join the Wye Valley Walk directly from your pitch, or head into the Brecon Beacons National Park (20 minutes’ drive) for more testing walks amid mountain landscapes. To trace the ancient border between England and Wales on a longer hike, follow Offa’s Dyke Path along Hergest Ridge from Hay-on-Wye (10 minutes) to Kington (four and a half hours’ walk). Need a day off from all the energetic stuff? Treat kids to a day out among the donkeys and alpacas at the Small Breeds Farm Park (25 minutes’ drive), while science buffs might appreciate a chance to peer at the universe through telescopes at The Spaceguard Centre (50 minutes, don’t miss the views over the Welsh hills into Shropshire). Combine sightseeing with history by visiting the Mappa Mundi and Chained Library Exhibition at the Norman cathedral in Hereford (40 minutes), and if the weather’s behaving, have a jaunt around the colourful flower borders at Hergest Croft Gardens (25 minutes).
