Grass tent pitch
Pitches by the river
Site for walkers and bikepackers, close to Route 7 and Cairngorm Loops
Pitches on grass

  • Peaceful setting with riverside pitches and views of the Cairngorms
  • A 15-min drive from Blair Atholl, 20 from Pitlochry and 60 from Perth
  • Semi-wild camping with hot shower plus free-range eggs for sale
Peace in Perthshire, with views of the Cairngorms? Come along to Dall Cottage Camping. The sensible folk here have set up their small site to stay as close to nature as possible, keeping the vibe as semi-wild camping in a rural wildlife haven. The site is next to the River Garry over a river ford crossing and is only accessible to walkers, cyclists and 4x4 vehicles, which means a definite remote feel as well as plenty of space… (parking and a lift in a 4x4 are available for those travelling in normal cars). And for your adventures off site? This is a stunning setting for outdoor days: on the southern edge of the Cairngorms National Park (Britain’s biggest, fact fans), a short drive from three lochs and just north of Tay Forest Park. There’s easy access to towns and cities too: Pitlochry is 20 minutes’ drive away, the Fair Trade shopping of Aberfeldy within 40, and Perth just over an hour. Blair Atholl, home to the Atholl Country Life Museum and Blair Castle, is 15 minutes from the site. Wild camping of any flavour most certainly needs fire, and the Dall Cottage team turn up trumps here too, providing firepits for guests’ use so that eats, drinks and stargazing can be done alongside toasty flames. Amenities are well thought out too: there’s a hot shower, clean and well-equipped compost toilet. Please note that only four wheel drive vehicles can be parked next to the pitch; other cars will need to be parked on the other side of the river (transport can be provided across the river on arrival and departure, but please provide the team with a time in advance).

Reception

  • There is no reception building on-site: on arrival please contact the number provided on your booking confirmation.
  • Access to the site is through a river across a rough un-surfaced ford, so is only suitable for 4x4 vehicles with good ground clearance: Campers on foot, bike, or trail-type motorbikes can also cross, but with caution and by experienced riders; for all other vehicles, you'll need to park on the other side of the river and use the site's 4x4 to transport your gear (please arrange this in advance). Most of the time the river is low, allowing for crossing, however, on occasion the river can rise quickly after heavy rain and be un-passable.

Riverside site with "wild camping" vibe. Spacious pitches, fire pits, honesty shop. Fun river crossing (owners assist). Beautiful, quiet, friendly hosts. Some road/rail noise (often masked by river). Confirm drinking water with site.

Primitive grass tent campsite

Liked I had a great 2 night stay from Friday to Sunday, Early Sept 26.
Good sized pitches with short grass and relatively flat ground, with the river running alongside. A nice gravel area with firepit & log seats for each pitch and grills that can be borrowed for cooking. Plenty of wood, bottled water and other things available to buy in the Camp Shop (Easy to pay via Sumup and Google/Apple Pay). The composting toilet and shower are both kept clean and Water is from a standpipe with soap handpump for handwashing, almost better than what you would expect. Use bottled or its fine for a boiled brew, as it's the same water the owners use (Your own safety first as always but they've been living off it).
Its only 4 pitches/groups and the cabin so you still feel pretty secluded, even though there might be a few others around nobody gets in anybody else's way. A great option for the semi-wild camping experience. I took a cycle along the old Military road and one of the other groups I spoke to were using it as a stop over for some hillwalking (including Schiehallion, I believe).
The A9 is only 200m away as the crow flies and the Highland Main Line railway is further up the hill on the opposite side but you'd never know as the river and trees mask anything and its just the flow of water and rustle of trees. They've recently planted some more young trees and once grown a bit this will make it even better.
From where you park your cark, it's just under 500m across the river and along the track to the pitches. The river was about calf deep at the most and not too cold so I just rolled up my jeans and had a pair of 'wet' shoes for crossing on foot. I was offered a lift but just walked. With hindsight and if you are reading this.....take the offer of a lift!

Primitive grass tent campsite

Liked I see where they are going with the wild camping setup but there’s nothing I liked apart from the friendly horse and shower. Never met proprietor, I just grabbed a shower which worked well in spite of bad instructions (there is no yellow lever) and left as the site lacked drinking water supply and hot water tap.

Disliked Nowhere to wash hands after using toilet unless you count the single outside cold tap. The only hot water is in shower which doesn’t have working lock (not one that I could figure out anyway). No drinking water unless you get plastic bottles from the self service shop hut. Insufficient signage on arrival as well as poor access road. I phoned for access at 6pm on a Saturday and one contact number at work, the other didn’t answer so I waded across the river . Both paddling and biking are tricky due to large slippy boulders and they should put in proper stepping stones for campers to use to avoid injury and provide convenience.

From the manager: Thank you for your review.
We're an off grid tiny eco campsite offering space and an escape from the crowds associated with commercial campsites.
We've taken great care to describe and list all the facilities and attributes here at Dall Cottage Camping. Everything is clearly mentioned, including drinking water, access to the campsite etc. On most occasions we assist campers over with thier equipment, but this is always arranged in advance of arrival, as detailed on Pitxhup. We are always available to help sherpa guests over the river.
We encourage all campers to please read carefully and fully all descriptions on pitchup before committing to a booking, this is to ensure the campsite is suitable for thier needs.
Thank you

Primitive grass tent campsite

Liked As the website describes, beautifully peaceful with a small number of well-spaced pitches. We really liked the honesty 'shop' and bought logs and fire-lighting kit for the fire bowl that comes with the pitch. We were cycle touring and enjoyed fording the river on foot with our bikes (water was calf deep). The big highlight was being able to dip/swim in the river. We would definitely stay here again.

From the south, stay on the A9 until you see the turnoff signposted Dalnamein to the left. Take the turning and almost straight in front of you you'll see two metal farm gates. Go through the gates (please do close all gates behind you) down the track and park on the right just before the river. Please text in good time prior to your arrival should you need assistance with crossing the river. From the north, look out for the Dalnamein sign to your right 1 mile after the dual carriageway and follow as above.

Local attractions

Local village Blair Atholl is a pretty place to start wanderings off at, for a stroll around the extensive gardens of 13th-century Blair Castle… followed by fish and chips at the town’s acclaimed takeaway. Scottish tweed, other clothing and gifts are all sourceable at the House of Bruar. The Pitlochry fish ladder is a local destination to take your camera along to: this famed fishway has 34 pools in total, including one with an underwater viewing area and CCTV for easy viewing. In town, the Pitlochry Festival Theatre has performances and festivals throughout the year, or if you’re feeling energetic you can strike out on the long-distance Rob Roy Way which runs for 79 miles from Pitlochry to Drymen in Stirling. More walking paths and mountain biking routes are close by, along with walks by Loch Rammel, Loch Errochty and Loch Tummel all within 25 minutes’ drive. More placid options include the zoo and safari park of the Highland Wildlife Park (45 minutes’ drive), Aviemore (55 minutes), Cairngorm Reindeer Centre (also 55 minutes) and Scone Palace (an hour and five minutes). Further afield, get along to Dundee or St Andrews (an hour and 25 minutes and an hour and 45 minutes away respectively), for several castles and Firth of Tay views at the former and some of the most famed golf in the world at the latter.
