Grass tent pitch
Pitches by the river
Site for walkers and bikepackers, close to route 7 and cairngorm loops
Pitches on grass

  • Peaceful setting with riverside pitches and views of the Cairngorms
  • A 15-min drive from Blair Atholl, 20 from Pitlochry and 60 from Perth
  • Semi-wild camping with hot shower plus free-range eggs for sale
Peace in Perthshire, with views of the Cairngorms? Come along to Dall Cottage Camping. The sensible folk here have set up their small site to stay as close to nature as possible, keeping the vibe as semi-wild camping in a rural wildlife haven. The site is next to the River Garry over a river ford crossing and is only accessible to walkers, cyclists and 4x4 vehicles, which means a definite remote feel as well as plenty of space… (parking and a lift in a 4x4 are available for those travelling in normal cars). And for your adventures off site? This is a stunning setting for outdoor days: on the southern edge of the Cairngorms National Park (Britain’s biggest, fact fans), a short drive from three lochs and just north of Tay Forest Park. There’s easy access to towns and cities too: Pitlochry is 20 minutes’ drive away, the Fair Trade shopping of Aberfeldy within 40, and Perth just over an hour. Blair Atholl, home to the Atholl Country Life Museum and Blair Castle, is 15 minutes from the site. Wild camping of any flavour most certainly needs fire, and the Dall Cottage team turn up trumps here too, providing firepits for guests’ use so that eats, drinks and stargazing can be done alongside toasty flames. Amenities are well thought out too: there’s a hot shower, clean and well-equipped compost toilet. Please note that only four wheel drive vehicles can be parked next to the pitch; other cars will need to be parked on the other side of the river (transport can be provided across the river on arrival and departure, but please provide the team with a time in advance).

If you're travelling in a normal car, you'll need to park on the other side of the river and use the site's 4x4 to transport your gear (please arrange this in advance).

What customers say

Peaceful, secluded site for a "wild camping" feel with great facilities. Spacious, private pitches with fire pits by the river. Friendly owners, handy honesty shop, and optional 4x4 ferry add to the charm. Midges can be a nuisance in summer. Top spot for nature lovers.

Unpowered grass tent site

Liked Lovely relaxed feeling to the site. Fun to cross the river to get to the campsite. Groovy huts for the toilets, shower and honesty shop. Everything worked well. Good space on each pitch.

Disliked Being next to the river in August, the midges were out. Not too bad, but enough to make me spray up and put a head net on!

Unpowered grass tent site

Liked We loved our stay at Dall Cottage camping. Hosts were lovely and getting picked up in an army truck to cross a river was a great start to the trip! Very clean and functional site with purpose built toilets and shower. The wee shop with fire wood, snacks, bug spray and more is a great touch!

Unpowered grass tent site

Liked We stayed here for one night what a great experience being taken over the river in the 4x4 it added to our little adventure! We were dropped at a super pitch nice and well maintained with a little tree swing near by! The toilet and shower and small shop were just a small walk from our pitch couldn’t have asked for a better location and we will definitely recommend and revisit this fantastic site and lovely welcoming people.

Unpowered grass tent site

Liked Easily our favourite camping spot, secluded and quiet, with only a few pitches as neighbours. My friends and I come here at least once a year. Good facilities and owners are about if any help is required.

Disliked Midges and wasps are a problem anywhere, here is no different. Accessing the site can sometimes be problematic with the river crossing but owners usual on-hand to help ferry you across.

Unpowered grass tent site

Liked Maybe the best place I've ever stayed for camping little bit more expensive but it's worth it and more. There's nothing better than this.

I'll always recommend it and I'm already looking at staying again.

Oh and thanks for having decent toilet paper!

Disliked Only annoying thing was the kids next door but that was it in the morning they were loud.

Local attractions

Local village Blair Atholl is a pretty place to start wanderings off at, for a stroll around the extensive gardens of 13th-century Blair Castle… followed by fish and chips at the town’s acclaimed takeaway. Scottish tweed, other clothing and gifts are all sourceable at the House of Bruar. The Pitlochry fish ladder is a local destination to take your camera along to: this famed fishway has 34 pools in total, including one with an underwater viewing area and CCTV for easy viewing. In town, the Pitlochry Festival Theatre has performances and festivals throughout the year, or if you’re feeling energetic you can strike out on the long-distance Rob Roy Way which runs for 79 miles from Pitlochy to Drymen in Stirling. More walking paths and mountain biking routes are close by, along with walks by Loch Rammel, Loch Errochty and Loch Tummel all within 25 minutes’ drive. More placid options include the zoo and safari park of the Highland Wildlife Park (45 minutes’ drive), Aviemore (55 minutes), Cairngorm Reindeer Centre (also 55 minutes) and Scone Palace (an hour and five minutes). Further afield, get along to Dundee or St Andrews (an hour and 25 minutes and an hour and 45 minutes away respectively), for several castles and Firth of Tay views at the former and some of the most famed golf in the world at the latter.
