Westlands Country Park: Fishing lake

General

  • Gretna country park with fly fishing and clay pigeon shooting
  • Over 100 acres with three fishing ponds: rods available on site
  • Shooting tuition, shop and café

Found a great catch or fancy a shotgun wedding? Sorted: this fab shooting and fishing site’s 10 minutes from Gretna Green.

Spread over 100 acres of grounds in the Dumfries and Galloway countryside, Westlands Country Park combines outdoor activities with fine natural surrounds: there are three fishing ponds here for starters, with some whoppers weighing in at 12lb (catch and release or keep a few to barbecue for supper). Rods are available on site and tackle shops are a 25-minute drive away in Carlisle.

You won’t find the clay pigeons as tasty as the trout but the shooting’s a lark, with the faux-birds being launched from a 140-foot tower. Novices can book a session with an instructor, but if you’ve got a shotgun licence you can hone your skills with some tuition or just head for the traps (booking essential).

The site has a café serving hot food from 9am and a small shop for basics… it’s hungry work all that shootin’ and fishin’, after all… And even if you’re not planning any nuptials, Gretna has pubs, eateries and supermarkets for stocking up.

Please note

Tents are not accepted at this park.

Under 18s must be accompanied by their parents or legal guardians.

Facilities/activities including fishing, shooting range access are subject to extra charges payable on arrival.

The restaurant is open between 05/01 and 12/31.

Reception is unmanned after 5 p.m.. Please inform the park while on your way there should you expect to arrive after this time so that the team can provide information about your unit/site.

High class all in site and service with a smile.09/21/2021

Well laid out and maintained site with restaurant facilities on site liked that each pitch had its own water supply. Showers and toilet block spotlessly clean although a fair walk from our pitch. Enjoyed a lovely Sunday meal at the restaurant with excellent friendly service and at a reasonable price the soup and lemon cheesecake were especially delicious.

    Disliked:

Noise from the shooting although aware of this prior to booking so didnt put us off and it didnt bother the dog.

Clean toilets and showers, but the shower button needs to be pressed every 20 seconds. New main building/ bar & restaurant. The on site peacock & percent.

    Disliked:

Where to start, we knew it was a clay pigeon shooting centre which wasn't the worst bit.
On arrival we were told the restaurant was closing at 4pm due to staff shortages and that it wouldbeback open the next night. Not brilliant for celebrating my birthday. It took an hour to find somewhere else for a meal. We decided to have lunch after we sorted the van. 2 toasted sandwiches, fries to share and a pint and glass of wine. This cost nearly £30 - gobsmacked - didn't realise I'd bought everyone else a drink too..... later that night the staff started setting up for a wedding for the following day which was surprising as we were told the restaurant would be open by the receptionist. At 4pm we tried to book a table at the bar. 4 wedding guests were standing at the bar with no face masks on. No social distancing from the barmaids and only 1 had a mask on. Got told that they were doing food at 6pm and that all the tables by the bar were taken, so only outside tables were available. The barmaid looked down her nose at us and we felt we weren't welcome because of the wedding still ongoing. We left and just made dinner in the van and drunk our own drinks and saved easily £50 - your loss Westlands.

Bins not in location as shown on the map and no glass recycling bin. Toilets are a fair hike away from the pitches, so go early. Dishwashing not sign posted or accurately described on map - they're in the the laundry - you just have to climb over all the dumped laundry.
On a walk to the fishing lake a strong smell of cannabis was coming from one of the lodges - disgusting.

Never even noticed if the shop was open or not. Genuinely only seen the shotgun shop in the building.

Peacock/ percent droppings left around the main building which meant late night wee's trying not to stand in it.

Nothing to do during the day.
Most expensive site of the 3 that we stopped at during our time away.
Free WiFi but only gave 1/2hr free per day.

Lovely site, nicely landscaped with helpful & friendly staff. The best thing was the dog-friendly bar/restaurant on site where we had a very nice meal on the evening we arrived. Facilities are very modern & clean.

    Disliked:

The only negatives were the noise from the shooting (although we went away for most of the day, so didn't bother us too much, however between 9-5 it's a bit noisy). Also, the toilet block is a bit of a distance from most of the touring pitches. Positives of friendly staff and clean facilities outweighed this though, and it's well-positioned for a family meet-up between Scotland England

The restaurant and bar was excellent for being an on-site establishment, again with very friendly staff.

We would definitely stay here again. :)

    Disliked:

Only one small thing, service bins could be empty a little late in the morning if possible and not 7am… :)

Local attractions

You don’t have to confine your fishing to the ponds: head to Port Carlisle (35 minutes) for sea fishing from the Solway estuary banks, or 55 minutes to Bassenthwaite in the Lake District.

Closer to home, Westlands is a 10-minute drive from Annandale Distillery for those who care to celebrate their fishing or shooting prowess with a single malt: tours are available every day and the distillery also has a café serving afternoon teas and regional food including haggis, plus Scottish and local craft beers and ciders… and a fine selection of whisky, of course.

It’s a 40-minute trip to Bowness-on-Solway, at the tip of the Solway Coast Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty; walk the Hadrian’s Wall Trail all 73 miles to Tyneside if you fancy it, or march a shorter section and picnic on the walls like legionaries did.

Some fine family-friendly walks start from Burgh-by-Sands (35 minutes) and Silloth (50 minutes), taking in the (alleged) resting place of Edward I, Hammer of the Scots, and the wildlife of the wetlands; various do-in-a-day bike routes start from Carlisle, Kirkbride (35 minutes) and Silloth to see the region from the saddle.

If you’re seeking more pulse-racing stuff, try flyboating nine metres over the water or jetskiing at Wetjets in Dumfries (25 minutes).

Must see

  • World Famous Old Blacksmith's Shop Centre (3.9 miles)
  • Carlisle Castle (11.6 miles)
  • Robert Burns Centre (18.6 miles)

National Trust

  • Wordsworth House and Garden (25.3 miles)
