  • Small Ayrshire camping and tourer site with Ailsa Craig views
  • Turnberry Beach and Trump Turnberry golf course five minutes’ walk
  • Family-friendly with an all-day tearoom, picnic tables and a play park
Whether you’re passing through on the way up north or down south, or hanging out in Ayrshire to explore the area’s many attractions, Balkenna Caravan Park is a handy little biker, camping and tourer site with easy access directly off the A77 (please note there may be some traffic noise). Welcoming dogs and kids, this low-key spot has a small play park safely fenced off for the latter, while Turnberry Beach is right across the road for families and their canine companions to stretch their legs. And the park has three more USPs up its metaphorical sleeve. First is the on-site Balkenna Tearoom, where you can grab a constant supply of hot drinks, breakfasts, snacks, main meals, vegetarian dishes, desserts and ice cream throughout the day. Secondly, the views out over the Firth of Clyde to the rocky bluff of Ailsa Craig are truly spectacular, and you get to see them from all over the pitches – and finally, the Trump Turnberry is five minutes’ walk away, a bucket-list attraction for any golfers among you. Some practical stuff too: there’s drinking water on site, as well as a chemical toilet disposal point and hot showers.

Liked We had a brilliant stay at Balkenna Caravan Park. The pitch sizes were fantastic – really spacious and well laid out, which made setting up stress-free. There’s a large open area that was perfect for the kids to run around and play safely, which made a big difference. The toilets were spotless throughout our stay, which we really appreciated. The views were stunning – the perfect spot for watching the sunset each evening. The staff were also incredibly friendly and always happy to help, which made the experience even more enjoyable.

Disliked The only downside for us was the noise from the main road – it’s quite close to the site, so if you’re a light sleeper, it might not be ideal. It didn’t bother us too much during the day, but it was noticeable at night.

Wills definitely recommend and be back ourselves.

Liked The full set up. Clean pitch, amenities, helpful staff and a lovely atmosphere. Great location short walk to beach.

Disliked Crossing to the busy road can be dangerous but this is not the responsibility or detriment of the campsite.

Liked Peaceful stay with stunning views
Me and my partner stayed for one night and had a lovely experience. The site was peaceful with beautiful views all around — perfect for a relaxing break. There’s a café on-site where we had breakfast, and it was excellent, both in quality and service. The facilities were very clean and well-maintained, which made the stay even more comfortable. Would definitely recommend for a quiet getaway!

Liked Having breakfast in the tearoom in the morning. Staff very nice and helpful. Got in late so just went straight to pitch and paid in morning. Play area for kids.

Disliked Pitch 1 in corner. Got in late and just got out to settle down to watch the sunset to find numerous campers walking past us to use toilet and pot wash. Instead of walking through car park from top field they took the shortcut through garden and ended up walking through our pitch. Lovely site but right next to main road that has traffic throughout the night.

Lovely site if you can tolerate heavy traffic throughout the night.

Liked Everything was acceptable as a basic short stopover for one night, except the traffic noise including non stop multiple lorries even tailgating each other at speed which was scary as we were pitched beside the road despite a fence being in-between.

Lovely sea views and sunset. Nice flowers. Lovely tea room and use of covered area during the evening.

Disliked the traffic noise including non stop multiple lorries even tailgating each other at speed which was scary as we were pitched beside the road despite a fence being in-between. The advert said may be some traffic noise. There was no may be about it. Constant lorries, cars and tractors at speed, noise left my nerves in shreds.

We travelled 40 miles just to come to this campsite thinking perhaps some distant traffic noise during the day time with occasional passing traffic at 30 mph. We didn't expect how bad it was.

The showers could do with a non slip mat as they're raised up off the ground and was slippery to get out of even with grabrail. Also hard to stand under the water spray as it points at the wall and won't adjust. OK for tall people tho not small people.

No worktop or draining board on dish sink .

We had also hoped to walk the 5 minute as advertised to the beach but the road was too scary.

Liked Lovey site, beautiful view. Loo & shower block is lovely. Nice to have tearoom on site even though we didn’t use it.

Disliked Washing up facility was basic to say the least, two sinks great- but no flat surface to put things on and hot water was a dribble !!
Unfortunately there was no gas for hot showers in the morning, we notified owners who replied promptly and someone came to look but had no spare gas bottle!!
Understandably gas runs out but you should have a full bottle ready, replacement bottle was too late for us we wanted to get off on our way. Just unfortunate on this occasion maybe.

From the manager: Thank you for your review! We're so pleased to hear you found our site lovely and convenient, enjoyed the beautiful view, and appreciated the loo & shower block. We're also glad you liked having the tearoom on site.

We sincerely apologise for the issues you experienced with the washing-up facility and the lack of hot water for showers on the morning of your departure. We understand how frustrating it must have been to have a dribble of hot water at the washing-up sinks and then no gas for the showers, especially when you were keen to get on your way.

You are absolutely right – we should always have a full spare gas bottle ready, and we deeply regret that this oversight impacted your stay. We are reviewing our procedures to ensure this doesn't happen again. We also take your feedback about the washing-up facility seriously and will look into ways to improve the hot water flow and provide a more convenient flat surface.

We truly value your constructive comments as they help us to continuously improve our facilities and service. Despite these unfortunate inconveniences, we're very happy to hear you would consider staying with us again, and we would love to welcome you back for a much smoother and more comfortable experience.

Definitely would recommend beautiful place

Local attractions

The whole family will enjoy the proximity of sandy Turnberry Beach (five minutes’ walk) for strolls along the dunes or a section of the Ayrshire Coastal Path, all backed by views out to Ailsa Craig in the Firth of Clyde. Take a boat trip from Girvan (10 minutes’ drive) to this dumpy, rocky islet to see the puffin and gannet colonies on its cliffs. Back on dry land, Culzean Castle and Country Park (15 minutes) sits on cliffs high above the Firth of Clyde; tour opulent rooms packed with priceless antiques and have a stroll around the formal gardens. Any culture vultures among you can also visit the Robert Burns Birthplace Museum (20 minutes) to learn more about Scotland’s favourite bard in his childhood home; displays include original manuscripts and period furnishing. If it’s time to treat the kids, Heads of Ayr Farm Park (25 minutes) has cuddly sheep, llamas, ponies and donkeys to keep them smiling, as well as mini-train and go-kart rides. Galloway Forest Park (half an hour) is the spot for woodland walks and games of hide and seek, and when younger kids need a bit of downtime, you can all chuff through wooded hills on the Doon Valley Railway (35 minutes).
