  • Peaceful Somerset farm site half an hour from Bristol and Bath
  • Plenty of space, with no restrictions on pitch size
  • Campfires and barbecues allowed; firewood for sale on site
Feel rural and regal in the village of Regil at quiet, well-maintained and very green Walnut Tree Farm, a small Somerset farm site roughly half an hour's drive from the cities of Bristol and Bath. There's a right royal amount of space here, and you can lay claim to as much of it as you wish, as there are no restrictions on pitch size here. Select your spot (by the stream, perhaps, or looking out over the neighbouring fields) and make yourselves at home with whatever outdoor furniture, paddling pools and barbecue kit you need for a comfy stay. Feel free to create a campfire corner too – there's firewood available to buy by the barrowload to help you build up a good blaze. Close to the pitches is a collection of excellent eco-friendly facilities, including clean compost toilets and hot showers. Quiet time (10pm - 8am) by night is requested across the site to ensure all guests can benefit from a good dose of rural peace to aid their dozing. It's also worth knowing the site is around four miles from Bristol Airport, and while it's not directly under a flight path, planes can be heard if the wind is blowing in the wrong direction.

What customers say

Peaceful, spacious, eco-friendly campsite in beautiful rural setting with stunning views. Guests love the spotless compost toilets/showers & owner Mike's friendliness. Fire pits/picnic tables provided. Minor plane noise/narrow access roads but overwhelmingly positive; many recommend & will return.

Primitive grass campervan or tent campsite

Liked Great site. Gorgeous spot. Lots of space. Cows and chickens as neighbours. Fresh eggs for breakfast. Access to fridge/freezer. Friendly and welcoming owner. Clean toilets with fresh flowers and showers with plenty of hot water. Quiet - you can hear owls at night! Spent lots of time at the campsite just chilling out and it’s honestly one of my favourite campsites. This was our second time staying.

Disliked Next to no phone signal. I don’t mind this, but worth knowing.

Primitive grass campervan or tent campsite

Liked Really nice peaceful campsite with lots of space and good facilities. Loved the birds singing in the morning!

Disliked £34 for one night felt expensive. We arrived at 4pm and had to leave at 8am so didn’t stay for too long and it felt like quite a lot of money for the time spent there.

Recommend to friends Visit again

From the manager: Dear Clara,
yes that does sound expensive!, because we do one night stay
for camping, we charge £10 car or van first night only,
understand not here very long!, discount if you come again??,
best wishes Mike.

Very nice peaceful stay. Very clean and a good host.

Primitive grass campervan or tent campsite

Liked Very friendly and relaxed atmosphere. Owners came to welcome us and let us where the facilities were and what was locally in the area. Very beautiful spot. Tables and fit pits provided, though at the very sensible request of the owners we didn’t use the fit pit as it was too dry in the field.

Disliked Showers were a bit of a walk, which was fine for us but something you might want to bear in mind when you choose your pitch.
Can hear planes very infrequently, again not a problem but something that might annoy some.

Local attractions

Looking over the Mendip Hills, it would seem that these limestone beauties would be an apt place to start your explorations from Walnut Tree Farm… it’s easy to see why this is an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty. As well as prehistoric Cheddar Gorge, half an hour’s drive from the site, there’s a Victorian fort at Brean Down (about an hour’s drive west), and an Iron Age hill fort (about 40 minutes south) at Brent Knoll, to hook every kind of history buff. While you’re doing the historical rounds, go Gothic at the National Trust’s Tyntesfield, a turreted and stone-carved mansion 10 miles north of Walnut Tree Farm. You'll be able to smell a good tale here – the house was once owned by one of the country’s wealthiest commoners, who managed to get himself rather stinking rich thanks to fertiliser. (It’ll all make scents if you pay a visit and nose out more.) Step onto the Monarch’s Way footpath to follow the escape route from the Battle of Worcester said to have been taken by the future Charles II back in 1651; running from Worcester to Bristol and down to Brighton, the path is clearly marked so ensures a royally safe experience (perhaps unlike that of Charles II). From the Monarch’s Way south of Bristol, you’ll wind up in Wells (15 miles from Walnut Tree Farm), where a cracking cathedral awaits, along with the 800-year-old Bishop’s Palace and its medieval features including a drawbridge and well-kept gardens for exploring.
