  • Family-friendly site with a relaxed atmosphere on 100 acres of land
  • In the Mendip Hills, a five-minute bike ride from Thatchers Cider farm
  • Firepits and campfires encouraged; café-bar and outdoor activities
Fancy having the freedom to explore ancient woodland by day and settle in next to an open fire by night (but with the added bonus of hot showers and flushing loos)? Make Mendip Basecamp Adventure Campsite your next spot for a getaway, and all of the above shall be at your fingertips. This hidden site has an off-grid feel and it's a top choice for folk who like to keep moving: it’s got an outdoor activity centre a five-minute walk away with rock climbing, caving, skiing, tobogganing, frisbee golf, abseiling, archery, rifle shooting, bushcraft and axe throwing on offer (for an extra fee). All this, plus 100 acres of land on site, means outdoor playtimes, family ball games, or just chilling out with a book on the grass are possible. That said, a leisure centre with a gym and indoor pool is under five minutes’ drive away if you're in need of indoor activities. Back at base, food and drinks are on hand at the café-bar, which serves up barista coffee, breakfast rolls, pizza and fries. The on-site shop is stocked with all sorts, from local burgers and cheese to beer, cider, ice cream and cold drinks. Plus, a 24-hour garage and well-stocked shop are 10 minutes away by car for those who need to sort out any additional food. A quick heads up if you’re planning on staying at the site: your tent or campervan needs to be under 2.7 metres high, and no caravans or motorhomes are permitted because of access restrictions. Basecamp is accessed via a rural track, which is driven at guests' own risk.

Liked Good washing facilities and amenities on site. Regularly cleaned. Lots of activities on site. Reasonably priced pitch.

Disliked Pricing in the shop was high but expected due to convenience. A stay could include a discount on an activity.

Primitive grass tent or campervan campsite

Liked Great views, and really friendly staff. Shop onsite was great and had so many essentials that you might need.
Fun activities for the family and a place to get food and drink onsite. Facilities were clean and maintained well.

Disliked It was very windy on the top of a large hill with little to no protection. The site has a lot of rocks underneath and so you do need to come prepared with hard rock pegs and a mallet.

Excellent site, highly recommend

Primitive grass tent or campervan campsite

Liked It was an excellent visit. Wide Owen fields to pitch in, extremely friendly and helpful staff and excellent amenities. Bathrooms and showers were clean and there were plenty of then. Drinking water points through the camp.

The sandpit (more like kingdom) was great! My 8 year old loved it. The camp shop on site had reasonable pricing in comparison to most others.

It was a wonderful experience overall.

Primitive grass tent or campervan campsite

Liked Excellent campsite with lots of facilities, things to do for the kids, handy shop and cafe serving food and useful bits for the stay. Wish we had more time there really.

Disliked The walk down to the restaurant, and back up, was a little long/steep. That's really the only critique.

Really nice site, good facilities and staff were great.…

Primitive grass tent or campervan campsite

Liked Really nice site, good facilities and staff were great.

Disliked Can't access site after 9pm. We wanted to watch the hotair balloon festival night glow but wouldn't have been able to get back on our pitch, would of had to sleep in the van at tye gate.

Excellent site, caters well to families and has a great environment!

Local attractions

Most of your time at this site is sure to be taken up immersing yourself in the outdoor adventures of the Mendip Activity Centre, but there’s also a range of other pursuits to consider while in the area. Set on cycling? Wheel your way along the Strawberry Line (around a 10-minute ride away) – this old railway between Cheddar and Yatton is now a family-friendly path. Make sure to drop by the Thatchers farm (five minutes) at the entry of the trail for sips of some famed cider. Check out the rest of the Mendips too, perhaps while meandering across Cheddar Gorge (15 minutes), Burrington Combe (10 minutes), or the lakes of Blagdon and Chew Valley (20 minutes). Outside of the National Landscape, wander Weston-super-Mare’s seafront and pier while feasting on fish and chips (20 minutes) and give Bristol (half an hour) a little attention – particularly the city’s historic harbour, suspension bridge and SS Great Britain.
