  • Family-friendly site with a relaxed atmosphere on 100 acres of land
  • In the Mendip Hills, a five-minute bike ride from Thatchers Cider farm
  • Firepits and campfires encouraged; café-bar and outdoor activities
Fancy having the freedom to explore ancient woodland by day and settle in next to an open fire by night (but with the added bonus of hot showers and flushing loos)? Make Mendip Basecamp Adventure Campsite your next spot for a getaway, and all of the above shall be at your fingertips. This hidden site has an off-grid feel and it's a top choice for folk who like to keep moving: it’s got an outdoor activity centre a five-minute walk away with rock climbing, caving, skiing, tobogganing, frisbee golf, abseiling, archery, rifle shooting, bushcraft and axe throwing on offer (for an extra fee). All this, plus 100 acres of land on site, means outdoor playtimes, family ball games, or just chilling out with a book on the grass are possible. That said, a leisure centre with a gym and indoor pool is under five minutes’ drive away if you're in need of indoor activities. Back at base, food and drinks are on hand at the café-bar, which serves up barista coffee, breakfast rolls, pizza and fries. The on-site shop is stocked with all sorts, from local burgers and cheese to beer, cider, ice cream and cold drinks. Plus, a 24-hour garage and well-stocked shop are 10 minutes away by car for those who need to sort out any additional food. A quick heads up if you’re planning on staying at the site: your tent or campervan needs to be under 2.7 metres high, and no caravans or motorhomes are permitted because of access restrictions. Basecamp is accessed via a rural track, which is driven at guests' own risk.

What customers say

Great for families with lots of space and activities for kids. Staff are friendly, shop's well-stocked but pricey. Toilets/showers mostly clean, but water pressure/temp can be an issue at busy times. Rocky ground for tents. Can get noisy on holidays.

Primitive grass campervan or tent campsite

Liked We arranged over the weekend for the mendips mini festival. Went as a family with my young kids 7 and 3. We all enjoyed it and had a great walk in the woods. Food at the ski centre cafe place was good too.

Toilets were kept clean and stocked with paper. they could do with a few more toilets at the main field where there was often a queue.

Primitive grass campervan or tent campsite

Liked Loved the space, shops, facilities and the fact that you weren’t restricted to early check out or specific plots. Friendly and helpful staff too.

Disliked Showers weren’t great, they sprayed too high so my face got a lot of water but my legs, not so much.

Recommend to friends Visit again

From the manager: Thanks for your lovely review! It's great to hear you had a brilliant time, and found our team so friendly. Thank you for your feedback regarding the showers. It's really helpful to know where we can improve!

Disliked Lack of shade. Unfortunately because of the heatwave we had to leave early.
Could have done with showers being in all areas.

Liked Space. After it emptied out on Sunday.
Also everything is build so nicely. The facilities and we love the sandpit and checkers board.

Disliked The stoney surface. Hard to get the pegs in the ground. Even before the long dry hot summer. As it was the same last year.

Liked The setting is great, on top of a hill with access to lovely views and near the adventure centre. Lots of activities, a vibrant evening schedule and lots of things for kids to do. Good to have a bar on-site and the option of pizzas and breakfast (although wait times are very long). Facilities were clean and the whole campsite well looked after.

Disliked Not really enough toilets for the size of campsite, so there was always a queue. The food wait was far too long.

From the manager: Thanks so much for leaving a review. We're glad you had a great time! Your feedback regarding wait times and facilities is really helpful. We'll take this on board as we improve our site.

Liked The staff were so helpful and kind

Disliked The place was so not well planned noisy after midnight the wind was so horrible did not sleep at all .kids playing outside our tent at 7am .just an open field and with the heat wave it was just unbearable

From the manager: Thank you for your feedback. We’re pleased to hear that you found our team helpful and kind, but we’re sorry you didn’t have a restful stay.

Mendip Basecamp is a family campsite, so children may be playing in the day time; our quiet noise policy is between 10pm and 8am so we are so sorry that you experienced noise between those times. We will use your feedback to improve our processes for future campers.

Unfortunately, the unusually hot and windy weather was beyond our control. We welcome couples, but recognise that our relaxed, family-focused atmosphere may not suit those looking for a quieter, adults-only campsite.

Local attractions

Most of your time at this site is sure to be taken up immersing yourself in the outdoor adventures of the Mendip Activity Centre, but there’s also a range of other pursuits to consider while in the area. Set on cycling? Wheel your way along the Strawberry Line (around a 10-minute ride away) – this old railway between Cheddar and Yatton is now a family-friendly path. Make sure to drop by the Thatchers farm (five minutes) at the entry of the trail for sips of some famed cider. Check out the rest of the Mendips too, perhaps while meandering across Cheddar Gorge (15 minutes), Burrington Combe (10 minutes), or the lakes of Blagdon and Chew Valley (20 minutes). Outside of the National Landscape, wander Weston-super-Mare’s seafront and pier while feasting on fish and chips (20 minutes) and give Bristol (half an hour) a little attention – particularly the city’s historic harbour, suspension bridge and SS Great Britain.
