Rope swings in the pitching meadow

  • Wookey Hole 2.5 miles; Wells 3.5 miles
  • Farm animals, rope swings and on-site farm shop; pub/café half a mile
What a bewitching place. And most especially for kids: Wookey Farm, a couple of miles from the famed Wookey Hole Caves (and their famed witch), is a tiptop option for small sorts and their owners, with loads of space to run around and a menagerie of animals to coo over. Older offspring will be sizzling with excitement on hearing that they can stoke flames and get social at the communal campfire area, while bigger folk will probably be content to bring along a firepit and laze idly on the family pitch, taking in the views of the Mendip Hills and towards Hembury and Yarley hills… Off site, it's three and a half miles from the farm to cutely compact Wells, six miles to Glastonbury, and a drive of 45 minutes to the coast at Weston-super-Mare. The site is on a small, family-run goat farm where guests are most welcome to meet the menagerie (sheep, pigs, hens and a donkey live here too) and find out all about running a farm. All pitches are in a level two-and-a-half-acre space with marked pitches or in an overflow meadow bordered by the River Axe: you can opt to be as mixed in or as far away as you like. Splashing, paddling and critter spotting can all be had in the river, as can back and forthing merrily on the rope tyre swing over the water (more swings are around the site if this seems slightly too hair-raising). Wookey Farm is an eco-friendly site, with emphasis on keeping things as natural as possible. Facilities are basic but well kept: four compost toilets and washbasins, cleaned twice a day; a washing-up area with water tap alongside; and plenty of facilities for sorting your rubbish (recycling and food waste contributions are keenly welcomed). For those barbecue supplies, the farm is just down the lane from Wookey village's café, shop and three pubs. There's also an on-site farm shop selling the farm's own goat's cheese, goat's milk and meat, along with alcohol, snacks and gifts.

What customers say

Beautiful, peaceful farm campsite with spacious, level pitches, natural screening, and picnic benches. Guests loved the friendly staff, farm animals, and scenic river location. Eco-friendly ethos and shop are great. Lack of showers and some composting toilet conditions were minor drawbacks for some.

Meadow primitive grass campsite

Liked Lovely spot - easy to find. We really enjoyed seeing the farm animals and playing in the river. We stayed in the super spacious meadow field which has a real feeling of freedom. Ideal for playing ball games etc too. The shop was great, and staff friendly. Appreciated the hot water supply for washing up. A clean, tidy and well run site.

Disliked The compost toilets were clean and spacious, but not what I expected - just a hole beneath the bowl with no sawdust. Consequently the smell was overwhelming.

Meadow primitive grass campsite

Liked Friendly staff, animals

Disliked Pitch full of holes and rabbit poop. No showers. Compost toilets furthest down on site 2 really stank… not great washing up area there either.

From the manager: Hi - thanks for the feedback. We'll do our best to improve although we don't have plans for showers in the near future. Sorry if you hadn't seen that in advance - we do try and make it clear on the website that there are no showers.

Power optional grass campsite

Liked We chose the electric pitches which id highly recommend. Spacious pitches and nice and quiet.
Small play bits round by the shop with the animals and feeder but you need £1 coins.

Disliked Rabbit holes everywhere on tent pitches, assumed they’d be filled in with soil to keep ground even.

Recommend to friends Visit again

From the manager: Hi - thanks for the feedback. The rabbits have got out of control! We'll try and get around the pitches to fill them in.

Meadow primitive grass campsite

Liked Location central for what we needed

Disliked Compost toilets are not compost toilets, these require the use of saw dust or wood chip to make it a compost toilets. Said toilets are just a hole with a loo seat fastened to it, the ammonia smell that comes up is quite something. The on site shop is only open between 10am and 12pm, check in is at 2pm, kind of no good if you need something back up the narrow single lane roads to the village.

From the manager: Hi - thanks for your feedback. We do put compost down the back when we are cleaning. When we had the sawdust in the toilets, we unfortunately found children putting it down the front and blocking the liquid pipe which had pretty awful consequences. We understand our toilets aren't for everyone.
We are always happy to open the shop for customers and my number is on the blackboard in front of the shop.

Amazing stay, really enjoyed the site.

Power optional grass campsite

Liked Low-key, sensible guidance to pitch. No unnecessary check-in. Space at each pitch with small wild hedges. Pic-Nic bench. Recycling bins at each pitch. Respectful other campers and children (also dogs!). Quiet except for early morning birdsong including collared doves. Low key eco toilet ( not to everyone’s liking.
Walking distance to Wells. Short drive to bird reserves at Somerset levels and Glastonbury Tor.
Selective farm shop - goat and cider orientated. Friendly and nice staff.

Disliked Whilst smelly toilets and no hot water for dishwashing and no showers or washing cubicles could upset some fastidious campers, it suited my wilder choice of camping.

Recommend to friends Visit again

From the manager: Thanks for the feeback and see you again

Local attractions

The farm is within easy reach of many top spots as well as Wookey Hole Caves, Glastonbury, Wells and Weston-super-Mare: spectacular Cheddar Gorge is 20 minutes' drive away, Longleat and Bath within 50, and Bristol just under an hour. Quieter times await around the region's walks, such as along the 30 miles of the West Mendip Way running from Wells via Wookey to the sea at Uphill, or the Strawberry Line (also 30 miles), a traffic-free route across Somerset from Shepton Mallet to Clevedon. Closer to home, amble along the River Axe flowing through the farm. Till ringers and fashion fans should take their wallets to Clarks Village, 20 minutes away, for outlet shopping and the Shoe Museum.
