  • Easy access to Taunton by road or along the canal by foot or bike
  • Wild peacocks, ducks, geese, guinea fowls and chickens
A Somerset site with 'cider farm' in the name: how fizzing fantastic. And the means to buy scrumpy on site from two spacious apple orchards: how fizzing fantastic too. Lashings of Henry's Farmhouse Scrumpy can be obtained at Tanpits Cider Farm Caravan and Camping Park – perhaps on arrival, to have on your very first day while firing up the barbecue for a post-sunset supper under the Somerset stars…? There are feathered and furred residents at this friendly and peaceful little farm site: wild peacocks, ducks, geese, guinea fowl and chickens all wander here, and you should see squirrels scampering about too. The farm is right next to the historic Bridgwater and Taunton Canal, about 40 minutes' walk or 15 minutes by bike via the handsomely scenic towpath to the old town of Taunton. Happily tasty pub food and ales are about five minutes' stroll from base, and a retail centre with shops (and cinema) is within easy walking distance. The farm facilities include hot showers, toilets, a launderette and a washing-up area. A play area is to hand for kids – possibly best to distract them while the grownups sort out a hefty purchase of Somerset farm scrumpy.

What customers say

This friendly, relaxed campground offers spacious, well-kept sites, many in an apple orchard. Guests love the spotless facilities, canal walks, and nearby pubs. Roaming peacocks are a hit! While some note road noise and desire facility updates, it's a good value, peaceful spot overall.

Liked There is good firm ground for anchoring your awning. Toilets and facilities are kept clean and tidy. Unusual camp area among the apple trees but it makes for pleasant surroundings and not forgetting those beautiful Peacocks that strut around the site. I'm guessing the site makes a good stop off point for camper vans heading down to Cornwall due to the easy access to the M5 as we noticed a few turn up in the afternoon and where gone by the morning.

Disliked The road junction towards rear of the orchard is quite busy especially during the start and finish of the working day and therefore produces a lot of noise. But we did note the closer to the entrance you where the more peaceful it became.

Liked Being in the apple orchard was quite unique as was the wandering peacocks.

Disliked Reception could have been friendlier, not pleasant talking through a plastic panel and not shown facilities, etc. Expected to see more of a working cider farm, we were not even asked if we'd like to purchase any. Road noise was an issue. Facilities were clean but would we stay again, sorry, it's a no from us.

Liked Quiet and peaceful

Disliked Rude lady on check in, she struggled with the art of conversation. All we got was …. “”Name, pitch anywhere on grass””, okay a hello would of been really nice.

More apples on the floor rotting than on the trees causing abundance of flies hence we have more bites than if we stayed in a mosquito infested swamp area.

This is advertised as a cider farm all you get is a paper in a window of times the “ cider farm “ will be open then you stand by a barrel and ask for on of 3 sizes of cider you want. No talk through no tour the man just disappears into a shed and comes back with your plastic milk carton of cider.

We chose this place because it said it was a working cider farm

Lots of untidy dumped areas like the barn that backs on to the children’s play area, there’s old machinery that’s clearly been there for months, and has easy access for children to enter. The barn where the peacocks inhabit there’s an old dumped caravan, machinery old bales of hay not nice places to look at.

Dishes wash area that only has cold water

Liked The whole feel. It's a simple campsite but the orchard feel is lovely. Yes there are fallen apples on the floor but they can be moved or played with by the children. There is a small soft play which was great entertainment. There are simple toilets, warm showers and washing facilities. The peacocks are great and wander close to you. Yes they sometimes make a noise but they live here. The cider tastes great, there is a clear sign at the checking in stop saying scrumpy is available and there are three different sizes to choose from. We enjoyed our stay and will see you again next year on our way back to Newquay, ideal stop off along the long drive.

Disliked No, the site is simple and as described

Local attractions

The shops and restaurants of historic town Taunton are a short drive from Tanpits Cider Farm Caravan and Camping Park, also easily reachable via bike or feet via the towpath of the Bridgwater and Taunton Canal. Have a wander in town around Vivary Park, once a medieval fish farm and now a place of tennis courts, miniature golf, playgrounds, model railway track and two playgrounds. Taunton's also famed for its flowers (the Taunton Flower Show's nickname is 'the Chelsea of the west'); if this suits your green-fingered tastes, Vivary Park also has over 55,000 spring and summer plants, and a rose garden that includes the Royal National Rose Society's Provincial Trial Ground. Other nearby places of interest and activity are the West Somerset Railway near Bishops Lydeard seven miles away, Clarks Village (20 miles) and Minehead, within 30 miles. The walks and mountain bike rides of the Quantock Hills are also a popular pick.
