General

  • Spacious, relaxing and free-range camping with clean facilities
  • Stunning views overlooking the Mendip Hills and Somerset Levels
  • Fires encouraged: pits, kindling and logs delivered at a small charge

Want to get away from it all, chill out and do some free-range camping? Check out Petruth Paddocks.

Jules and the team have made it their mission to ensure all guests have a seriously laidback time: you won’t find overly zealous wardens prowling about here, and open fires are positively encouraged – fire drums, kindling, logs and lighters can be delivered to your door every evening for a small charge. (Please don't bring your own wood etc so the team know what's being burnt on site.)

Take the Strawberry Line by foot or bike for 15 minutes from the Petruth Paddocks gate to arrive at Cheddar Gorge, or continue on and take the old railway line path to Yatton, where trains hauled strawberries from the slopes of Cheddar to the early morning markets in east London over half a century ago. The bottom gate of the site goes directly to the Somerset Levels and there are marked walking and nature trails all around from Cheddar Gorge.

The site has stunning views overlooking the Mendip Hills in one direction and towards the Somerset Levels in the other. There’s loads of open space for the kids to run about in, get to know other and make new friends; Jules often gives trailer rides to kids at weekends too and farm tours can be arranged depending on guest number.

Facilities are basic but clean, and the piping hot high pressure showers, well-maintained toilets and washing-up sinks are all cleaned twice a day. The team operate a strict recycling policy: guests are asked to being five rubbish sacks and the Petruth staff will explain their system when you arrive.

Petruth Paddocks welcomes families, singles, couples and well-behaved groups. Well-behaved animals of all shapes and sizes are welcome... as long as they come with well-behaved owners who pick up after them...

Food and coffee are served throughout the day on weekends.

Please note

The site does not accept breeds/crossbreeds listed in the Dangerous Dogs Act.

Campfires positively encouraged - fire-drums, kindling, logs and lighters delivered to your door every evening for a small charge. Please don't bring your own so the site knows what's being burnt.

Autumn/winter bookings please note: Showers and toilets are basic but clean; please also be aware they are mobile. The washbasins currently have a cold water feed; however, piping hot water supplies the showers and covered washing up area. If any of the above is a problem for you you'll probably be happier elsewhere.

Please mention a group name here if you are joining other bookings

Adult groups of over 5 people will be charged a £20 per person behaviour bond upon arrival. This is returned on condition that:

The campsite have not had to ask more than once for the group to turn music off at 11 or keep to quiet chatter after.

The group has left their pitch clean and all rubbish has either been recycled or taken home.

Fantastic location and easy to get to. The site had clean facilities, which became crowded during a busier time. Staff were helpful, polite and friendly at all times around the site. Separate ‘adults only’ area meant we could enjoy our stay without being concern of children being around. A fantastic service for logs/kindling/fire lighters in the evening where these were delivered to your tent.
An on-site service of a traditional ice cream cart and coffee were a lovely touch. Along with a local ale brewery and home made pizza a short walk away.

    Disliked:

The site became crowded by the weekend with many holiday goers, this meant queues were often long for showers, toilets and washing up stations. Although measures were put in place to maintain social distancing, there were many people onsite which made this a challenge at times when queuing/moving around the site.
Many people were using drones onsite, this made it very uncomfortable for privacy when these were flown over head without prior warning.

Excellent toilet and shower facilities - really clean and never had to wait. Water pressure was amazing and showers were lovely and hot. The scenery was awesome. Really close to Cheddar along a short footpath where you can see lots of rabbits! Friendly staff. The camp fire set up is excellent, too - just grab a ready-made fire on the day! A large site, but never felt too crowded. Very scenic and tranquil for the most part.

A lovely set up where you arrive and follow a lovely staff member on a bike to your pitch! Having a choice of three different areas was great.

    Disliked:

The rules clearly state that there is to be no loud shouting after 11pm, which we appreciated, but we did have a group by us up shouting and singing loudly until 1am. Sadly, there didn't seem to be anyone patrolling at any point and nobody to report this to until the next morning. An evening patrol would have been good to stop this, as they were loudly shouting and swearing two nights in a row.

Loads of space, flat pitches, flexibility with use of pitch (we had VW and awning tent), lots of loos and several showers (all cleaned regularly), fire pits for rent, logs for sale (brought round daily), eggs and marshmallows at reception, friendly staff. Location good for walking above Cheddar gorge; 15 minute walk or quick cycle to Tesco Express and village centre, on path away from roads.

    Disliked:

Noise from adjacent industrial estate from fairly early morning, could be a bother if you are that side of the site.

Local attractions

As well as the leisure centre, Cheddar village (a 10-minute walk from the site) has crazy golf, riding stables, go-karting and seven pubs, all of which are child-friendly; there are also English, Indian, Chinese, Thai and Italian restaurants and pizza delivery to your pitch.

Fishing and sailing are both available at Cheddar Reservoir, but as you’re near so many caves in this part of the world some caving and potholing might be just the ticket too; several companies are in and around Cheddar to show you the ropes.

A 15-minute drive takes you to Wookey Hole Caves, home of the famous witch and with a circus, fairy garden and regular events, is a less hair-raising way to see Somerset caves (and is the home of cave-aged Cheddar cheese).

Cheddar Gorge is just five minutes from the village and has crazy golf, a cheese factory and six more pubs, all of which welcome children and dogs. For foodie delights, especially for veggies, make a stop at the tasty vegetarian café on your stroll towards the Gorge drop - we highly recommend sampling the homemade cakes on offer too...

If, like us, your favouritest things after cheese are chocolate and beer, the Cheddar Chocolate Company and the Cheddar Ales brewery are both very tasty; if it's cider you're after then Wilkins Cider Press can pull you a pint (or two); while Cheddar Sweet Kitchen, also in the village, holds free demonstrations of sweet-making to the drooling public.

For shopping, which should be done anywhere in the country you end up at, the famous Cheddar car boot sale is at Winchester Farm every Sunday all year round. More? Head for Clarks Village in nearby Street to get your mitts on discounted designer labels and brands.

Exmoor National Park is well worth a pony around too; go at night for some stargazing as it’s the first designated Dark Sky Reserve in Europe with several good places to see the best of the skies.

Elsewhere in Exmoor there’s horse riding, climbing, canoeing and fishing; info on all these and Exmoor events can be found at the park’s visitor centres based at Dulverton, Dunster and Lynmouth. Dry slope skiing, clay pigeon shooting, climbing and off-road driving can also be done nearby.

Day trippers will be chuffed to know that Cheddar is less than an hour away from Bath, Bristol and the seaside at Weston-super-Mare, with Glastonbury and the tiny city of Wells also easily accessible.

Must see

  • Cheddar Caves & Gorge (1.0 miles)
  • Wookey Hole Caves & Papermill (5.2 miles)
  • Ebbor Gorge National Nature Reserve (6.1 miles)

  • King John's Hunting Lodge (2.3 miles)
