  • Friendly and traditional farm site with fantastic views over Exmoor
  • A 15-minute drive from Tiverton and half an hour from Exmoor
  • Small shop selling farm produce including free-range milk and meat
‘Traditional and uncommercial’ is how the owners of West Middlewick Farm describe their home, making it a champion choice for a chilled break in mid-Devon countryside. It’s also rather a pretty place to have a hol. On arrival, eye up the excellent views out over Exmoor National Park from the main site, a four-acre field circled by farm walks, then amble over to the carp fishing lake to angle for the afternoon. It’s not just about peaceful pursuits hereabouts, though – the Gibson family who own the site say there’s plenty to do, spanning from theatre and film to history and heritage, in the nearby area. Tiverton (15 minutes’ drive) is home to a castle and edges a canal, while Exmoor (half an hour) has walking trails, a cracking coastline and historic villages to explore. Back at the park, a small shop sells the farm’s produce – including raw milk and free-range meat – and stocks other locally sourced ingredients such as butter, cheese, ice cream, fresh fruit and vegetables, jams, chutney and Devon fudge too. Fancy picking up a souvenir? Homemade soap and sheepskin are top trinkets to take away. And as for food? Spread out on your spacious, level pitch for a picnic or pull up a pew at one of the nearby and order a freshly cooked meal.

Power optional cement/asphalt and grass campsite

Liked: Quiet. Relaxed. Able to accommodate us despite recent very wet weather. Other sites even with hardstanding and advertised as open couldn't. Allowed to choose hardstanding with hook up. 2nd field good views, peaceful, bird song. Basic toilet facilities open for us adequate for one night. Farm shop open until 6pm Saturday well stocked. Out of season, good value.

Liked: Sehr freundlicher Platzbetreiber.

Liked: The family that run the farm are very friendly and eager to help where they can, the farmers wife showed us where the best pitches were to keep as dry as possible and also said we could use as much space as we wanted due to it being quiet. Then the farmers son had to help tow our car out of the mud when it got stuck. None of this was any issue at all! The toilet block was very close to where we pitched, the showers are a fair little walk away but you get to see the animals on your way to and from, we took loads of 20p’s with us thinking we’d need them but the machines do accept £1 coins too. Both the toilets and showers were clean and stocked every time we used them. The wifi was good, it isn’t as expensive as other reviews say, we paid £20 for a week, this may be expensive to some but we thought this was pretty reasonable, I think it was £5 for 24 hours and £10 for 48 and then £20 for a week, I’m sure there was a longer one but can’t remember the price. The wifi worked great though, you’re allowed to connect up to 5 devices and it doesn’t seem to affect service. We could stream from Netflix on the TV without issue. I don’t know if it would slow down if more people were staying there, obviously it’s a quiet time of year. We didn’t use the farm shop as it said it was closed until Easter on the door but driving past did see it open occasionally. Not to do with the farm but there is a lovely little pub in nomansland called The Mount Pleasant Inn, beautiful food very reasonably priced and it’s less than a 5 minute drive from the farm. They also allow dogs, we have 3 and they were fine with them coming in. There are little rooms off the main bar which would be great for dogs that may be a little nervous etc, it does say on the door and outside that the dogs must be cat friendly but we didn’t see the cat the two times we went. This was our first camping experience and even though it rained a bit, this was a great place to start! It’s right in the middle of dartmoor and exmoor. We will definitely be returning next year!

Disliked: The only thing that we would’ve liked it for the laundry to be open so we could wash our clothes. Speaking to a neighbour who was on a long stay there she had said that they used to have a commercial machine but now they don’t. This wasn’t a problem as such just would’ve made it a little easier for us, it does say on their site that they have a laundry. But couldn’t find it signed anywhere. Obviously it didn’t ruin our holiday or take away from the farm at all and there are laundrettes in Tiverton about 15/20 minutes drive away if we got really desperate.

Liked: Lovely pitches at working farm, needed levelling blocks though to make us fully comfortable. I found it absolutely hilarious that there are animals everywhere and it was really lovely and fun to hear them all in the night (cows somehow got out of their field and poor farmer had to chase them back in around 4am to stop them wandering about the camp which again I found hilarious and fair play John, hope you got some sleep 🤣). Friendly staff. Shower blocks bit outdated but clean. You need 20p coins for showers and hairdryer to work. £1 for 5 minute shower. Fair. Toilet free. Farm shop on site/ Two camping fields. Would recommend if you’re not too bothered about farm sounds and animals.

Disliked: Fair walk to facilities but there is so many animals to see along that it makes for a fun walk. Goats, rams, kittens, rabbits, calfs, you name it!

Liked: Good site with lovely views on a working farm. Good clean toilets. Well stocked farm shop on site.

Disliked: A little further from Tiverton than we realised but that was our fault not anyone else’s responsibility.

Local attractions

Clip-clop around the countryside from The Rose & Crown in Calverleigh, which organises horse riding lessons (15 minutes’ drive), or take to Tiverton (around the same distance) to poke around the town’s castle and meander by its canal. Another place to peer at is Knightshayes Court, a turreted house and garden with a tearoom (25 minutes), while Bickleigh Mill – dating back to the 18th century and with a pottery studio for clay-based classes – is also worth a gander. If you’ll be keeping adventures alfresco, set off on the scenic Tarka Line rail journey, starting in Exeter (40 minutes) and finishing in Barnstaple. Or for more lovely landscapes, loop around Exmoor National Park (half an hour), perhaps up to the lush coastal villages of Lynmouth and Lynton and through the vast Valley of the Rocks (an hour). If sandy sunbathing sessions are more your bag, turn in the opposite direction towards Exmouth beach on the south Devon coast (also an hour), stopping by estuary villages like Topsham enroute for a pint at a pub with a watery view.
