  • Simple pitches at a laidback farm site in Dartmoor National Park
  • Castle Drogo and Moretonhampstead Motor Museum within 15 mins' drive
  • Dog-friendly site 15 minutes' walk from Chagford's pubs and shops
Fancy going camping on Dartmoor, but also keen to be within easy reach of town facilities? Aller Park Farm is the place you need – this peaceful site is surrounded by the stunning scenery of the national park, and yet it’s only a 15-minute walk from the pubs, cafés and shops of Chagford. It’s worth doing a good stock-up at the farm shop and deli in this Devon market town, as there’s plenty of space for a picnic back on site, and barbecues are permitted if you'd like to do some alfresco cookery. In fact, the whole vibe here is pretty laidback, with plenty of space for kids to run around and play games, groups and dogs allowed and a firepit area for evenings by the campfire. Working on the principle that sometimes simple is best, facilities here have been kept to just the essentials: guests have access to a compost toilet, a washing-up area and picnic tables. Staying in Dartmoor National Park of course means great access to outdoor activities – there are plenty of walking and bike trails around, plus games of golf to play, gardens to explore, wildlife to spot and historic sights to visit.

What customers say

This quiet, natural campsite offers wide-open fields with lovely countryside and Dartmoor views, perfect for a simple getaway. Guests loved the clean, efficient showers and composting toilets, plus a basic but appreciated wash-up area. Chagford is nearby for amenities and walks. Minor signage and larger vehicle access issues were noted, but a friendly owner and amazing dark skies were big wins for many.

Disliked Difficult to find, location on Pitchup website was inaccurate ... Here is an accurate what3words location "///elders.skis.windows" It would help if the entrance was signposted better

Primitive grass campervan campsite

Liked Very spacious field in the centre of beautiful countryside - lovely views. The site is very peaceful with occasional traffic noise from the road next to the convenience area ..... not enough noise to interfere with our stay and there was plenty of space to park away from that side of the field. The shower and composting toilet were simple, efficient and very clean. The wash-up area was basic but we'll received.

Disliked There was nothing to dislike about this campsite - it is basically just a field on a farm with the necessary requirements but it is very isolated. It's too far and too dangerous to walk to the small town of Chagford and we couldn't find a space to park.

Primitive grass campervan campsite

Liked Beautiful location, amazing views, very simple but well done. Lovely hot shower and clean loo. Beautiful dark skies, loads of wildlife and very nice helpful owner Fred. 15 minute walk into Chagford and perfectly place for long walks. Had lovely swim at Chagford pool. Campsite a great find, real shame it’s not open for longer.

Disliked Real shame only July and August but hopefully this may change.

Liked Unspoiled, quiet campsite in a lovely location off very quiet road close to Chagford

Disliked Ability to adjust shower - difficult for shorter people to use comfortably. Could be easily solved though and otherwise good.

Primitive grass tent or trailer tent campsite

Liked The back to basics style of site was exactly what i was hoping for. There was eve a hot shower which was a bonus. Dont let the compost loo put you off, there was no smell at all and everything was clean and fresh. The views were fantastic and so much history in the area especially in the village of Chagford. The nighttime view of the stars was stunning. I saw over 30 satellites and 7 meteorites.

Disliked Too hot for me except when night fell, then it was perfect.

Primitive grass tent or trailer tent campsite

Local attractions

Take a wander around Chagford (15 minutes’ walk) first, looking out for the attractive church, the octagonal market house (fondly known as the Pepperpot) and checking out the independent shops and galleries. If you need a cool-off on a hot day, head a little way out of town for a dip in the outdoor pool. For a dip into the past, plan walks around places like Scorhill Stone Circle or Fernworthy (both 15 minutes’ drive), where you can do a circuit of the reservoir and then head to the stone circle. Castle Drogo (15 minutes) is another great option – built in the 20th century by Edward Lutyens, it’s become known as ‘the last castle in England’. The gardens here are gorgeous, and you can access trails into the Teign Gorge too. Moretonhampstead Motor Museum (10 minutes) is a nice place to visit nearby, or you can head further into Dartmoor for things like the Dartmoor Prison Museum (25 minutes) or walks in Becky Falls Ancient Woodland Park (20 minutes).
