  • Simple pitches at a laidback farm site in Dartmoor National Park
  • Castle Drogo and Moretonhampstead Motor Museum within 15 mins' drive
  • Dog-friendly site 15 minutes' walk from Chagford's pubs and shops
Fancy going camping on Dartmoor, but also keen to be within easy reach of town facilities? Aller Park Farm is the place you need – this peaceful site is surrounded by the stunning scenery of the national park, and yet it’s only a 15-minute walk from the pubs, cafés and shops of Chagford. It’s worth doing a good stock-up at the farm shop and deli in this Devon market town, as there’s plenty of space for a picnic back on site, and barbecues are permitted if you'd like to do some alfresco cookery. In fact, the whole vibe here is pretty laidback, with plenty of space for kids to run around and play games, groups and dogs allowed and a firepit area for evenings by the campfire. Working on the principle that sometimes simple is best, facilities here have been kept to just the essentials: guests have access to a compost toilet, a washing-up area and picnic tables. Staying in Dartmoor National Park of course means great access to outdoor activities – there are plenty of walking and bike trails around, plus games of golf to play, gardens to explore, wildlife to spot and historic sights to visit.

Primitive grass tent or trailer tent campsite

Liked: Absolutely belting campsite. No pitches, just pick a spot on the massive open field, pitch up, crack open a cold one and enjoy the absolutely fabulous views! Toilet, rubbish bins and cold water, what more do you need? The delightful town of Chagford is a mere 10 minute stroll away with lovely pubs and welcoming local shops.
Fred the campsite owner is a very accommodating lovely chap and he made us feel welcome.
Our 3 children loved the wide open spaces and freedom to roam, with plenty of space for cricket, frisbee, football, rugby and everything in between.
See you again Fred. Many Thanks.

Disliked: Nothing to dislike.

Primitive grass tent or trailer tent campsite

Liked: This site is destined for greatness. When we stayed. It had been opened 4 nights. The basics are there, composting toilet, running water and soon to be installed shower.

Fred (the owner) and his dad were incredibly friendly and helpful. The ethos is keep the number of pitches small so there’s room for kids to run around.

If you’re in anything larger than a Crafter van, you’ll struggle to navigate through Chagford’s streets, so come from the opposite direction.

This place is like a new band that you’ve seen live, and you can brag how once upon a time…

All the stars indicative of the love we have for the place. It’s still new and a work in progress. But thoroughly charming. Good luck to Fred and his dad!

Disliked: Nothing to dislike really other than signage to find the field was tricky, and the entrance awkward for the LWB campervan, but that’s being dealt with, and a new entrance being created.

Recommend to friends Visit again

From the manager: Thanks for the positive review Jon, it was great to meet you. There is no doubt that entering the site is not the most straightforward if your'e in a lwb van. The approach is made more simple if you pass the gate and turn around at the triangle 200yds passed the gate and enter the site going downhill. All being well we will have a new entrance next year. We hope to see you again soon. Fred.

Primitive grass tent or trailer tent campsite

Liked: Quiet, no nonsense camping field with compost loo. Booked last minute, lovely find just outside Chagford. Great location for accessing Teign Valley, Castle Drogo and the rest of Dartmoor. Chagford Lido was great after a long day walking.

Recommend to friends Visit again

From the manager: Thanks Paul. I'm so pleased you enjoyed your stay. I'm sure the walking did not disappoint either. Walking the Upper Teign valley I'm sure will not have disappointed either. It's a beautiful walk and finishing off with a dip in the lido is the perfect way to relax. Don't leave it too long before you come back and see us. Fred

Local attractions

Take a wander around Chagford (15 minutes’ walk) first, looking out for the attractive church, the octagonal market house (fondly known as the Pepperpot) and checking out the independent shops and galleries. If you need a cool-off on a hot day, head a little way out of town for a dip in the outdoor pool. For a dip into the past, plan walks around places like Scorhill Stone Circle or Fernworthy (both 15 minutes’ drive), where you can do a circuit of the reservoir and then head to the stone circle. Castle Drogo (15 minutes) is another great option – built in the 20th century by Edward Lutyens, it’s become known as ‘the last castle in England’. The gardens here are gorgeous, and you can access trails into the Teign Gorge too. Moretonhampstead Motor Museum (10 minutes) is a nice place to visit nearby, or you can head further into Dartmoor for things like the Dartmoor Prison Museum (25 minutes) or walks in Becky Falls Ancient Woodland Park (20 minutes).
