Pitches before the grass was cut

  • Simple pitches at a laidback farm site in Dartmoor National Park
  • Castle Drogo and Moretonhampstead Motor Museum within 15 mins' drive
  • Dog-friendly site 15 minutes' walk from Chagford's pubs and shops
Fancy going camping on Dartmoor, but also keen to be within easy reach of town facilities? Aller Park Farm is the place you need – this peaceful site is surrounded by the stunning scenery of the national park, and yet it’s only a 15-minute walk from the pubs, cafés and shops of Chagford. It’s worth doing a good stock-up at the farm shop and deli in this Devon market town, as there’s plenty of space for a picnic back on site, and barbecues are permitted if you'd like to do some alfresco cookery. In fact, the whole vibe here is pretty laidback, with plenty of space for kids to run around and play games, groups and dogs allowed and a firepit area for evenings by the campfire. Working on the principle that sometimes simple is best, facilities here have been kept to just the essentials: guests have access to a compost toilet, a washing-up area and picnic tables. Staying in Dartmoor National Park of course means great access to outdoor activities – there are plenty of walking and bike trails around, plus games of golf to play, gardens to explore, wildlife to spot and historic sights to visit.

What customers say

A serene, no-frills spot with amazing views, perfect for a quiet escape. Reviewers love the big field, welcoming host, and handy compost toilet/hot shower. Great for exploring Chagford and Dartmoor. Some found it tricky to find or access with bigger rigs; improvements are planned. Minor shower/water hiccups were quickly sorted.

Primitive grass tent or trailer tent campsite

Liked Very peaceful and quiet pitches, laid back and easy. Good value for money and a great camping experience with a lovely surrounding area with lots to do

Disliked No toilet roll every now and then and only one water tap with a trough below full of mucky water making it unappealing. But simpler amenities made it feel more simple and peaceful whilst being practical

Primitive grass campervan campsite

Liked Very nice meadow with a nice view of the hills. The good shower was an added value!

Disliked A little harder to find and the road is very narrow. No problem for us, but it is a point of attention for travelers with campervans.

Primitive grass tent or trailer tent campsite

Liked Really nice site hidden away in the hills near Chagford. Back-to-basics toilet and shower which - perfect if what you are really after is a hot shower. Great views and a very flexible owner. Would highly recommend. Use the google map directions on the pitchup site to find it as the entrance is quite hidden! T

Primitive grass campervan campsite

Liked Wonderful quiet location. Useful signs along the way to let you know you’re going in the right direction. When we arrived the shower wasn’t working. A quick call to Fred and the water supply issue was resolved. Absolutely superb service. Would highly recommend if you like quiet camping.

Primitive grass campervan campsite

Liked My spot under a tree out of the way looking towards the sunset

Disliked I had been staying at another v longstanding established campsite for the the 3 days beforehand, up on another part of Dartmoor , which had much better amenities and was actually half of the price so I felt this one was a bit overpriced. V nice helpful owners tho.

Primitive grass tent or trailer tent campsite

Liked It was very quiet. Very basic. Good views. Easy to use every thing.

Disliked I wouldn’t want to be there if it was busy as only one toilet and one shower. The water was intermittent. And when I tried to get hold of the owner I was not able to.

Local attractions

Take a wander around Chagford (15 minutes’ walk) first, looking out for the attractive church, the octagonal market house (fondly known as the Pepperpot) and checking out the independent shops and galleries. If you need a cool-off on a hot day, head a little way out of town for a dip in the outdoor pool. For a dip into the past, plan walks around places like Scorhill Stone Circle or Fernworthy (both 15 minutes’ drive), where you can do a circuit of the reservoir and then head to the stone circle. Castle Drogo (15 minutes) is another great option – built in the 20th century by Edward Lutyens, it’s become known as ‘the last castle in England’. The gardens here are gorgeous, and you can access trails into the Teign Gorge too. Moretonhampstead Motor Museum (10 minutes) is a nice place to visit nearby, or you can head further into Dartmoor for things like the Dartmoor Prison Museum (25 minutes) or walks in Becky Falls Ancient Woodland Park (20 minutes).
