General

  • Small and award-winning glamping site 20 minutes' drive from Padstow
  • Peaceful farm with Camel Estuary views a mile off A39 at Wadebridge
  • Excellent food pub a couple of minutes' walk away

There’s always something to look at when you stay at Chapel Farm – this peaceful glamping site on an ex-farm estate is in Cornwall’s Camel Estuary Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, with excellent views over the River Camel towards Padstow.

Sailing boats, speedboats and jetskiers are frequent sights out on the river throughout the day, and there’s often a stunning sunset later in the day (a fine backdrop to an evening by the barbecue, many would suggest). Once the sun’s gone down, it’s the turn of the stars – although the site’s accommodation area is well-lit, there’s no street lighting around here and so (clouds permitting) there are often cracking views of the stars and planets overhead.

No doubt all of this sounds most promising on the peaceful break front, but if your relaxation needs also demand a pint of something local and someone to cook you something tasty, that’s also easily sorted, as the site’s pretty much next door to a great foodie pub.

Also within walking distance is the venue for the annual Royal Cornwall Show; for jaunts further afield, bring bikes to take out on the Camel Trail, flag down a bus 10 minutes’ walk away or use the nearby A39 to get to some of Cornwall’s more far-flung attractions. Pretty Wadebridge is a five-minute drive away for shops and other amenities.

We loved the caravan and the surroundings. There was enough space to accommodate us all and we had a relaxing stay. The caravan is surrounded by lovely flowers and there is plenty of outside area too. The children enjoyed the firepit and the swing ball in the garden.
The host was very helpful when we needed assistance and she made us feel welcomed and at home.
The children were kept buys and they haven't asked for the WIFI password, which is a first!

I like the area it was quite and great views, the lady that runs it had some great advice where to go and even had a pamphlets where the best places to go for what you wanted to do

    Disliked:

Not a lot of places for a small child but the lady was very generous with space in the garden and gave some great ideas for places to go with him I think I’d stay somewhere with more open space for my child to run around and loose some energy, but great friendly service

From the manager...

I think this lady was right it wasn't really suitable for a small child to stay around most of the day. Visitors mostly use the site as accommodation and go out and visit all the lovely places in Cornwall and can return in the evening to a fire or barbecue. Small children like staying in the caravan but it's not like a holiday camp where there are lots of activities during the day and I don't say it is . It's probably more suited to adults or families who are happy to go out during the day for entertainment.

  • Liked:

Bell tent was lovely and spacious with kitchen and bathroom facilities. Had everything you could need, including wood burning stove. Very comfortable. Quiet and peaceful location with lovely walks and excellent local pub, The Quarryman Inn.

    Disliked:

Tents could do with a clean and more thorough attempt at cobweb removal. Kitchen door frames are very low! Proper doors should be fitted on kitchens, as rodents were getting into our kitchen at nighttime - one night stealing an unopened packet of bread rolls!

From the manager...

Thank you for your review. Comments are always helpful. There are fitted cupboards in the kitchen so putting food away is a good idea as it is a field and there will be wildlife around. I'm afraid the tents came back from cleaning not looking good. We are going to replace them next year.

Local attractions

The easiest route for a walk or a bike ride around here is along the Camel Trail, which runs for a flat and traffic-free five miles alongside the river from Wadebridge to Bodmin and Padstow. If you’re aiming for the former, take a tour of the old jail and a ride on the steam railway; in the latter, stop in for top-notch food at the town’s celeb-owned restaurants.

Newquay, 25 minutes’ drive away, is rightly famed for its beaches and watersports – sea kayaking, jetskiing, flyboarding, surf lessons… all can be sorted in the town and along the nearby coast. A waterpark, aquarium and zoo are also in town for folk with kids too small to be sent out to sea.

Other top picks for family days out include the various rides of Camel Creek Adventure Park (10 minutes’ drive) and the tropical domes of the Eden Project (half an hour); traditional fishing village Port Isaac (20 minutes) and Lanhydrock House (25 minutes) might be more your style if you’re travelling without nippers.
