  • Small and award-winning glamping site 20 minutes' drive from Padstow
  • Peaceful farm with Camel Estuary views a mile off A39 at Wadebridge
  • Excellent food pub a couple of minutes' walk away
There’s always something to look at when you stay at Chapel Farm – this peaceful glamping site on an ex-farm estate is in Cornwall’s Camel Estuary Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, with excellent views over the River Camel towards Padstow. Sailing boats, speedboats and jetskiers are frequent sights out on the river throughout the day, and there’s often a stunning sunset later in the day (a fine backdrop to an evening by the barbecue, many would suggest). Once the sun’s gone down, it’s the turn of the stars – although the site’s accommodation area is well-lit, there’s no street lighting around here and so (clouds permitting) there are often cracking views of the stars and planets overhead. No doubt all of this sounds most promising on the peaceful break front, but if your relaxation needs also demand a pint of something local and someone to cook you something tasty, that’s also easily sorted, as the site’s pretty much next door to a great foodie pub. Also within walking distance is the venue for the annual Royal Cornwall Show; for jaunts further afield, bring bikes to take out on the Camel Trail, flag down a bus 10 minutes’ walk away or use the nearby A39 to get to some of Cornwall’s more far-flung attractions. Pretty Wadebridge is a five-minute drive away for shops and other amenities.

Local attractions

The easiest route for a walk or a bike ride around here is along the Camel Trail, which runs for a flat and traffic-free five miles alongside the river from Wadebridge to Bodmin and Padstow. If you’re aiming for the former, take a tour of the old jail and a ride on the steam railway; in the latter, stop in for top-notch food at the town’s celeb-owned restaurants. Newquay, 25 minutes’ drive away, is rightly famed for its beaches and watersports – sea kayaking, jetskiing, flyboarding, surf lessons… all can be sorted in the town and along the nearby coast. A waterpark, aquarium and zoo are also in town for folk with kids too small to be sent out to sea. Other top picks for family days out include the various rides of Camel Creek Adventure Park (10 minutes’ drive) and the tropical domes of the Eden Project (half an hour); traditional fishing village Port Isaac (20 minutes) and Lanhydrock House (25 minutes) might be more your style if you’re travelling without nippers.
