The meadow

General

  • Eco site in the Hampshire countryside
  • Within easy reach of both London and the south coast
  • Showers, toilets and large open areas for kids to play

As little environmental impact as poss is the name of the game at Hampshire's Cedar Valley: this is a simple site for those who like camping deep in countryside but who still like their comforts such as showers, toilets and wash basins.

Cedar Valley is in an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, set deep in scenic Hampshire countryside but within easy reach of both London and the south coast. The South Downs Way is nearby for hikes, fishing (and fishing lessons) are a couple of miles away at Meon Valley Springs, and clay pigeon shooting can be arranged on site.

But you may care to laze around the grounds for some significant time too: the canny team here has added a firepit shack with candle lanterns and plenty of seating, for communal campfires whatever the weather, and a 'tree castle' is also on site to clamber.

Pitches at Cedar Valley are in a large grassy field near Bereleigh House, where you can roam the field and finding just the perfect place. There's also a designated mown area where kids can play football, fly kites and generally muck around to their little hearts' content: you might find they don't want to leave...

Excellent stay in the meadow with our family group of 17 ,very warm welcome from owner who suggested that our group and another family group of 15 might be more comfortable in the meadow as the paddock was very busy. So we had loads of space to play with the children, and could spread ourselves out ,hope to book again for next year .

Really friendly staff couldn’t do enough for us, loved the bus with stuff to do for kids, pizza and nachos were amazing, toilets and showers were clean and the washing up stations were well stocked. The little village has two nice pubs and is easy to walk to the staff were also very friendly and welcoming in both pubs. The fire pits are a great idea and always lots of wood.

    Disliked:

We pitched our tent at the back of the field and it was very sloppy which made us slide down in our beds at night.

  • Liked:

good flat ground (in places - get there early), fire pits, closeness of facilities, quiet after 9 pm, hot showers, sale of firewood. Bus would be great for kids in bad weather but we didn't need it (although they liked the sweets and ice creams!)

    Disliked:

grubby shower curtains, not enough hooks for clothes/towels, perhaps a shelf for toiletries? couple of broken taps at wash basins which made them almost impossible to turn on or off

Local attractions

Get out via two wheels: several decent bike tracks are on the estate itself or you can pedal off around the area's many lanes and bike routes. A good run is to Petersfield six miles away, to stock up on armfuls of fresh produce at the Wednesday and Saturday markets.

If trotting's more your thing, ask the Cedar Valley team about the pony rides available in the surrounding countryside: both experienced and amateur riders can take their pick from three-hour rides through first-class woodland, or around the area's cross-country course. If you prefer your equine animals at a speedy distance, the racecourse at Goodwood is about half an hour's drive away.

More of a foot-based wanderer? The Cedar Valley team has mapped out many walks in the area so you can wander off to see where your feets might take you. The South Downs Way is close by: try the walk from Petersfield to Cocking, via Nursted Copse and Harting Down.
