Bowses Hill Farm: Grass pitches

General

  • Family-run 10-acre farm site with woodlands just outside Blackpool
  • A 25-minute drive to Blackpool Wake Park and Blackpool Zoo
  • Logs available to buy; firepits and barbecues permitted; shop nearby

Everything outdoorsy runs strong at Bowses Hill Farm, a family-run dog-friendly site with the tender touch of owners George and Charlotte, two big nature and outdoors lovers. It’s certainly nature-packed here, as the 10-acre farm is in a rural patch outside of Blackpool, and it has opened up its land for like-minded, keen explorers to get back to nature within the woodlands.

You’ll be going down a privately-owned lane, tucked away… and once you're on site, there’s a nice mix of the homely and the wild. The owners want you to really appreciate nature, so an afternoon may look like wildlife spotting, den-building or searching for hidden tree drawings in the woodlands – or perhaps getting your hands dirty with some bushcraft activities or picking up wood and logs for a firepit.

The site still has cosy creature comforts though, including a smart toilet/shower block opened for the summer 2021 season. There are logs available to buy from the site so that you may get a fire or barbecue going for some wild cooking, being sure to be mindful of their location, away from other guests and disposed of correctly.

This is a wildlife haven with a peaceful stay in mind, so guests are asked to be respectful of the woodlands, leaving them unruffled, and noise levels must be kept down after 10.30pm to ensure little visitors and tired guests can get a good snooze.

Conveniently, the local shop is just five minutes’ drive away from this site, so it’s easy to get your hands on more logs or other essentials ready to get exploring.

Please note

Guests are advised to bring a good quality flashlight with them as parts of the park are unlit.

There is no reception building on-site: on arrival please contact the number provided on your booking confirmation.

No naked flames are allowed inside the hired accommodation units.

A £20 deposit is required for the firepit hire.

The hot tub will be prepared, but not lit, in advance. Please allow between one and two hours for it to be at the desired temperature.

Loved the farm, little wooden area and we pitched in the grass which was perfect for us and our tent size. It's not a big site so the fact there was only 1 other family on the grass pitch gave us plenty of room

    Disliked:

No fault of Browses Hill but there is another camp site close by and not sure how common it is but this Saturday night in September there was loud music and a MC broadcasting til 2am. Our girls are over 5 so managed to sleep through it. However lots of crying from other campers with toddlers and well husband and I just had to keep waking up til the music stopped.

We attended on the bank holiday, the field was packed when we got there and several more turned up after us.
We were within a couple of metres of the pigs and a group up late chatting.
The parking was a nightmare, we were contacted at 10pm to move the car. There are no markings in the carpark so people parked all over the place. The owners are right in saying people had taken 2 cars; the two families I saw packing up both had a car for stuff and one for the kids

packing up the tent and going home. we had booked for 2 nights, but one was enough !

    Disliked:

    1. owners packed as many tents as possible onto the field and we were told to pitch close together if we don't we will be asked to move our tent.
    2. people can hear each other's conversations because you're so close. (forced socialising with strangers) 3. animal enclosure (pigs, chickens, and sheep on the camping field) you can't get to sleep due to the noise all night.
    4. communal bins are always full.
    5. due to the crowded camping field, the car parking was a nightmare. (not enough spaces)

From the manager...

Hi Steven,

This is the first we've heard you haven't enjoyed your stay, we've had some great reviews from the bank holiday weekend. It's also given us the opportunity to further improve on what's already a successful family site.

Although busy we allowed enough space between pitches to be safe, as always. Family members could stay closer together but with the correct distances to remain safe. If you'd had pitched to close we would of asked you to move further away, this is why you were told this on arrival.

Although we have animals in enclosures, these do not cause noise late into the evenings. They make noises as expected but it's never been mentioned before as a nuisance. These animals are brilliant for children and adults alike and provide a great farm environment.

Regarding our bins we can only assume you haven't seen our other recycling areas on site, we've got 3 different places in case you struggle finding places to put rubbish. These we're emptied throughout the weekend and we always made sure we had free bins for rubbish. We have a total of 5 x 1100l bins throughout our site.

Our car parks were busy due to bookings bringing more than one vehicle, we opened up our overflow parking area which was ample enough for everyone on site, in the future we'll be limiting 1 car per booking or charging for extra vehicle's to prevent this happening again.

We'd love to hear anymore points you have and invite yourself to get in contact directly, we'd welcome you back onto our site at any point to see all the changes we've made.

Kind Regards

George & Charlotte - Bowses Hill Farm

Local attractions

You may know Blackpool for its seafront and 19th-century Central Pier (half an hour’s drive) complete with a funfair, but the attractions certainly don’t end there. You might have a hard time deciding between catapulting down waterslides in Sandcastle Waterpark (35 minutes), dropping from heights at Blackpool Pleasure Beach (35 minutes) or playing like a prisoner on the theatrical rides in the The Blackpool Tower Dungeon (half an hour).

Water ready too? Blackpool Wake Park (25 minutes) has an aqua park where you'll be able to get your bounce on. Watersports are on full throttle here too, with everything from wakeboarding to kayaking. St Annes beach (40 minutes) will keep up this spirit too, as the sandy stretch is a hotspot for windsurfing and kitesurfing (and donkey rides, in typical seaside style too).

To wind things back down, the town has a few spots for a more leisurely pace. Perhaps a tour of the enclosures in Blackpool Zoo (25 minutes), getting up and close with the wax figures at Madame Tussauds (half an hour) or seeing what life looks like underwater at SEA LIFE Blackpool (half an hour)?

Must see

  • The Blackpool Tower (6.9 miles)
  • Blackpool Illuminations (7.1 miles)
  • Central Pier (7.1 miles)

  • Dalton Castle (20.6 miles)
