Cairn Meadow Pods: Oyster Catcher camping pod exterior

General

  • Quiet glamping site overlooking the Pennines and two wildlife ponds
  • A 20-minute drive from Carlisle and RSPB Geltsdale
  • Wooden ensuite pods with space for up to four; decking and picnic area

Looking for hikes along Hadrian's Wall and Pennine explores with an extra layer of comfort? Cairn Meadow Pods, a small glamping site set deep in the Cumbrian countryside, could be just the job.

This rural spot is surrounded by lots of water – there are two large nature ponds on site (hence the pods being named after wading birds) and a river runs just alongside too. Slightly further afield, meanwhile, you can get to the Lake District National Park in about half an hour's drive, while the sand dunes and salt flats of the Solway Firth are about 40 minutes to the west.

Back at base, you'll have plenty of room to relax in your furnished ensuite pod, where there's a double bed and convertible sofa that together can sleep up to four. A nifty bathroom is also included, and there's a small kitchenette with essentials like a microwave, kettle, toaster and fridge – just the thing for a bit of light cooking. Outside, the pods have wooden decking where you can take in the views; there are also picnic areas and plenty of spaces for car parking.

Cairn Meadow Pods is on the edge of the North Pennines Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, about 15 minutes' drive to the south of the market town of Brampton, an attractive spot just two miles from Hadrian's Wall. The much larger town of Carlisle (20 minutes) is also close by for a wider range of amenities.

Please note

Swimming in the lake is not allowed.

Under 18s must be accompanied by their parents or legal guardians.

The site does not accept breeds/crossbreeds listed in the Dangerous Dogs Act (i.e. Pit Bull Terrier, Japanese Tosa, Dogo Argentino, and Fila Brasileiro).

Bookings must not consist of more than 1 different households.

No naked flames are allowed inside the hired accommodation units.

At least one of the party members must be aged 18 or over.

Nearly everything. Great quiet site. Pods were fantastic quality. Everything supplied that you should need. Warm. Comfortable bed. Good patio area and gravelled drive so no mud to walk through

    Disliked:

The shower. Unfortunately there was only enough water in the tank for one person to have a very quick shower. Such a shame. Also the pod is close to water and reeds and a pond so you may need something to fight off the midges

Quiet location. Stunning countryside. Pods are clean and tidy and finished to high standard. Bedding and towels provided. Lovely decking area with countryside views.
No WiFi and no mobile phone signal - great for disconnecting.

    Disliked:

Massively overpriced, too many flies and mosquitos, hot water not lasting long enough, some rude and aggressive local bullies driving dangerously on narrow country lanes putting lives at risk.

Really gorgeous onsuite glamping pod with attention to detail, including a drink each for me and the hubby and sweets for the kids, plus milk in the fridge when we arrived. Couldn't fault as everything you needed being there for you. Excellent location for a peaceful stay, close enough to some lovely places to visit for a few hours, not too many people around as only two other pods just now. Caravan site next to it only had a few vans and also quiet. Dog friendly Pod. Your own picnic seat and fire pit/bbq was great.
Value for money. Helpful owner who messaged before our stay with info.

    Disliked:

The sofa bed was a bit uncomfortable for grown kids as it is a bit small. The design of essentially two chairs together, means a hard lump in the middle.
This isn't a dislike but the heating in the pod was very warm. The info asked not to change it but even trying to switch off and back on meant it seemed to jump from a comfy 15 to 23 degrees very quickly. Sure that's a bonus later in the year but with four in the pod it was quite toasty. A tweak by the owners would be good.
For the dog friendly pod maybe somewhere to be able to hoop the dogs lead outside would be good.
Hubby woke to a pretty awful smell in the bathroom by the early hours of the morning on our first night. Running the water helped as the pods are very new. We mentioned it to the owner, who had it sorted by the time we came back later, so while not ideal it was dealt with without any fuss.

Local attractions

Cairn Meadow Pods is set in the aptly-named Eden Valley, a lush expanse of green countryside with plenty of walks and bike trails to explore. There's also a lot of wildlife in the area, from birdwatching at RSPB Geltsdale to fishing opportunities and woodland walks at Talkin Tarn Country Park (15 minutes' drive).

For sport and leisure, look eastwards towards the hiking paths that crisscross the high peaks of the Pennines, or take the M6 south towards the Lake District's northern reaches for paddling on Ullswater (30 minutes) and Derwentwater (45 minutes). Lazonby (20 minutes) also has a great open-air swimming pool (a far cry from the Med, but still much warmer than swimming in the Lakes).

History and heritage are up next, and there's plenty to be found around here – Hadrian's Wall (15 minutes), Carlisle Castle (20 minutes) and the Solway Aviation Museum (20 minutes) are all nearby for interesting and educational days out, as are the rather remarkable ruins of Lanercost Priory (20 minutes).

Must see

  • Carlisle Castle (8.1 miles)
  • Birdoswald Roman Fort (10.7 miles)
  • The Rheged Centre (14.8 miles)

National Trust

  • Acorn Bank Garden and Watermill (15.8 miles)
  • Allen Banks and Staward Gorge (18.3 miles)
