Camp with views of ullswater

  • Spacious family park with spectacular views of Lake District fells
  • Penrith a 20-minute drive and Lake Ullswater within a 30-minute walk
  • Marina, licensed bar with TV and a games room, shop and playground
If you reckon a site with stunning views of the Cumbrian fells sounds like your kind of place, head over to family-friendly Ullswater Holiday Park. Sitting a half-hour walk from the shores of Ullswater (where guests can use Fair Field Marina or spend time canoeing, fishing and riding the famed Ullswater steamers), this option’s in a fab location for touring round the Lake District National Park. Kids can mess about in the half-acre playground at this well-equipped place, while adults have an ale at the licensed bar or a Farrer’s coffee in the café. Wifi is available (around the reception area and bar, not the whole site) and there's also a shop for essentials (including groceries and camping equipment) and a few supermarkets are 20 minutes’ drive away in the nearest town of Penrith. The capital of Cumbria in days of yore, this place has the 14th-century fortress to prove it... If loping from local village to local village seeing structures such as this sounds like an excellent option too, ride one of the Lake Ullswater steamers stopping at settlements such as Pooley Bridge and Glenridding along with the Aira Force falls. After you’ve set eyes on the whooshing water, other attractions nearby include those that combine architecture with lush landscapes – like Dalemain Mansion & Historic Gardens, 10 minutes away, and Lowther Castle & Gardens (20 minutes). There's also the Rheged Centre Cinema, a heritage hub in an old quarry with a grass roof, gallery and 3D screen (15 minutes away). Please note that the games room and bar may not be available in the low season (check in advance for opening hours).

Primitive grass tent campsite

Liked Staff at front desk were lovely, if you had children the park looked very good. Toilets were clean

Disliked Seems like a lot of rules , almost taking out the fun of camping. Didn’t realise the no fire rule and felt a little intimidated by the torch shined ‘into what would be our home’ for the weekend.

FHU gravel travel trailer campsite

Liked toilet and showers were fantastic, hotel like! everywhere was clean, the staff were very friendly and helpful giving us tips on activities and best places to eat.
there is a fish and chip shop on site that is open part of the week. very popular so you may have to wait a little this didn't bother us. there is a game room which has 2 pool tables and a variety of arcade game, this was popular with younger families and teenagers who can easily get bored as mine use too, lol.
There is also a large bar which again was clean and hosted quiz nights etc.

Disliked Nothing to dislike about this campsite, Would be nice to be closer to the lakes but the site itself is wonderful.

Liked Showers hot and powerful.
Grounds and park really well kept and maintained.
Reception, café and shop very nice.
Pitches nicely spaced out....campers not on top of each other.
Charging point a nice extra.

Disliked Need more shower cubicles. Maybe another block further down park
Charging point needs more sockets.
Need more electric pitches.

From the manager: Thanks so much for your review—it’s wonderful to hear you enjoyed your stay and appreciated the little details that make a big difference, like the powerful showers, well-kept grounds, and the thoughtful layout of the pitches. We’re especially glad the reception, café, and shop made a positive impression, and that the charging point came in handy!

We also really value your suggestions. Expanding shower facilities and increasing the number of electric pitches and charging sockets are all things we’re actively considering as we plan future improvements. Feedback like yours helps us prioritize what matters most to our guests.

We hope to welcome you back again soon.

Primitive grass tent campsite

Liked This was a lovely site with picturesque views, the staff were very helpful and friendly, the site was nip and clean, we were on a pretty level pitch as were all the pitches in the area we were camped. Facilities were clean and modern. Took my 2 young grandchildren and they loved it, especially the sheep in the field who they went to see every morning. Will definitely be returning 😊

FHU gravel travel trailer campsite

Liked Park was mainly clean and tidy, fabulous location and great fish and chips!

Disliked We were near the park, and it was noisy from 7am until sometimes after 11pm. No wardens or parents in site, some of the children were awful, one of them ripped my nephews toy in half. It was incredibly noisy by the park so would not want to be there again, had to get earplugs to sleep. All in all a decent site, bit some guests and lack of rule enforcement ruin it. I would return but not during holidays. Maybe for a weekend.

From the manager: Thank you so much for sharing your feedback. We're really pleased to hear you enjoyed the cleanliness of the park, its fantastic location, and of course—the fish and chips! It’s always great to know what’s working well.

We’re genuinely sorry that your experience was disrupted by noise and a lack of supervision near the play area. That’s not the kind of stay we aim to provide, and we understand how frustrating it must have been—especially with the incident involving your nephew’s toy. Your comments have been shared with our team, and we’re reviewing how we manage guest behaviour and noise levels, particularly during busy holiday periods.

We appreciate your honesty and are glad to hear you’d consider returning for a quieter weekend. We’d love the chance to give you a more peaceful and enjoyable stay next time.

Primitive grass tent campsite

Liked Went with my son so he was happy with the children's play area. The pitches were all nice short grass which were thoroughly raked. Excellent for throwing our tent up.

Disliked If you're tenting here you need a car/van full stop. It's too far from anywhere to not have your own transport.

There is a bar with a big room but entertainment was only one night out of our 2 nights and it was a man with a guitar doing cover songs. Granted he was good at his job. In my mind there would have been scope for nightly bingo or some other such entertainment that can involve the kids aswell. Bingo in hotels and the like always goes down well with all.

The onsite chippy is basically a waste of time for people on site camping. All sorts of people from the local area travel in to use the chippy and the cars are backed up out the site gates. I ended up driving out to Penrith cos I'd set my heart on a chippy meal, as had my son. I was made up we did because we went to Angel Lane chippy in Penrith and it was absolutely lovely and well worth the money.

From the manager: Thanks so much for sharing your experience — we really appreciate honest feedback, even when it’s tough to hear.

Transport: You're absolutely right, this is why we invested in the hopper bus that now runs through the summer holidays that will pick you up directly from the campsite and take you down to Pooley bridge or Glenridding There's also a local bus that comes to the bottom of the hill that will take you further a field. We’re tucked away for that peaceful countryside feel, and this is perfect for hikers and customers that are wanting to explore the beautiful lake district by foot.

Entertainment: We’re glad you enjoyed the musician — he’s a local favourite! That said, your suggestion about more entertainment, we do have a kids disco on every Saturday with Bingo and Quiz nights which our customers love.

Chippy Queue: We hear you loud and clear. The popularity of the chippy with locals is a double-edged sword, and we’re sorry it disrupted your plans. The on site Fish & Shop is certainly making a name for its self and becoming extremely busy with the best catch of the day. However we are exploring ways to better manage traffic.
Angel Lane is a gem though — glad you and your son had a great meal there!

Thanks again for taking the time to write this. Your feedback helps us grow, and we hope we can welcome you back with a few improvements next time.

Primitive grass tent campsite

Liked Excellent access to Pooley Bridge and the surrounding area, well signed and easy to find, generally clean and well kept. Good park for kids. Pretty sheltered from wind.

Disliked The toilets are badly distributed. The furthest camping pitches the camping overflow field (about 40 pitches all together) and about 20 touring caravans have easy access to one cubicle, one sink and one shower per gender. There are others on the site and some of them are very nice. They're just not easy to get to. This means that the toilets that are there are in very heavy use and for a couple of days had no soap.

The pitches are extremely hard and you need heavy duty tent pegs.

There's no enforcement of the group policy, noise policy or loose dogs / dog exercising policy, so don't expect the site to be as quiet as advertised. Yes, there's an emergency contact number but I don't really see enforcement of site rules as an emergency and telling the office the next day doesn't really help with at good night's sleep.

Recommend to friends Visit again

From the manager: Thank you for taking the time to share your feedback. We're genuinely sorry to hear that your experience didn’t meet expectations, and we appreciate your detailed observations.

We understand how important access to clean and well-distributed facilities is, especially in the overflow field. Your comments about the limited amenities and the temporary lack of soap have been noted, and we’re actively reviewing how we can improve both the distribution and maintenance of our facilities.

Regarding the pitch conditions, you're absolutely right—some areas do require heavy-duty tent pegs due to the terrain. We’ll look into how we can better communicate this in advance to help guests prepare.

As for site policies around noise, groups, and dogs, we regret that enforcement fell short during your stay. While we do provide an emergency contact, we agree that proactive management is key to ensuring a peaceful environment.

Your feedback is a valuable reminder, and we’re working on ways to strengthen our on-site presence and responsiveness.

We’re grateful you brought these issues to our attention. It’s through honest reviews like yours that we can continue to improve the experience for all our guests.

Local attractions

The Lake District doesn’t skimp on swish sights and attractions, and many of the best things to see and do in the national park – from bushcraft and watersports to golf and tennis – are within easy driving distance of the site. For classic Cumbrian walks Hallin Fell is a 20-minute drive away and the market town of Keswick, where you can go from perusing a pencil museum to dancing around the megalithic Castlerigg Stone Circle, is reachable in 25 minutes. A bit south of the town of Penrith (20 minutes) are the prehistoric Mayburgh Henge and Norman Brougham Castle. Other well-known Lake District settlements are also within easy reach along winding roads, like to Windermere (45 minutes away) and Ambleside (50 minutes). And if you fancy a crack at cantering instead of sitting in the car? Horse riding can be had from stables within a 15-minute drive, while guests who prefer roving on a revving vehicle can squat upon a quad bike and set off into the local lands (25 minutes from the park).
