  • Peaceful Cumbria campsite near the banks of the River Eden
  • Surrounded by woodland and fields with a backdrop of the Pennine Fells
  • Adjacent to a nearby playground area, park and bookable swimming pool
It's in a heavenly location near the banks of the River Eden, surrounded by woodland and fields, with the Pennine Fells as its wild backdrop – and Lazonby Campsite is next to the local Lazonby Swimming Pool for easy access to dips as long as you book them in advance online. The river's right there if you want to fish (get a permit at Kirkoswald community shop or at the pool kiosk) and the northern Lakes are 15 miles away. Lazonby is on the edge of Lazonby village (about eight miles from Penrith), which has a pub, a well-stocked supermarket (open daily with post office and ATM), two churches and a petrol garage. A repair garage, two more pubs and another play park are about a mile away in the neighbouring village of Kirkoswald. Toilets and solar-powered showers are in the swimming pool buildings about 200 metres from the campsite (the path is lit at night but you might want to bring a torch too), and there are washing-up facilities and a chemical disposal unit along the lane to the side of the pool. The pool is open daily (and subject to an entry fee) from the early May bank holiday until mid-September and is heated to 24ºC; lifeguards are on duty at all times. It also has a kiosk/café selling hot and cold drinks, snacks, sweets and ice creams during pool opening times.

Liked: The site was located in beautiful surroundings right by the river. The playground was great for kids and the outdoor pool next door was even better! It was also quiet in the evening which was very much appreciated. There are also some lovely walks right from the campsite along the river.

Disliked: Although the lido was great, the cost for a family of four was expensive. They should offer discounts for campers.

There was no phone signal or wifi at the site.

Liked: The area is scenic with the river running alongside it.

We were impressed with the volunteers that maintain the pool and facilities.

Disliked: We were really looking forward to a relaxing camping trip, but unfortunately, this site didn't live up to expectations.

Firstly, the campsite is small and poorly managed. Despite there being marked pitches, people didn’t follow the layout. The tent next to us encroached well over the lines, leaving us feeling crammed. It felt like a free-for-all rather than a well-organised site.

Noise was a serious issue. Quiet hours were clearly not enforced. Loud music and shouting children carried on past 10pm, and parents made little to no effort to control their kids. It didn't help that football was being played in the camping area instead of the designated field. Our tent and car were actually hit, which is completely unacceptable.

Another frustration was the location of the toilets, a bit of a trek, and they’re part of the pool facilities rather than proper campsite amenities. And speaking of the pool, we were shocked to find out it cost an extra £6.50 per person to use. It just didn’t feel like value for money.

All in all, we left more stressed than relaxed. This could be a great spot with some basic management and respect for the rules, but as it stands, we wouldn’t return or recommend it.

From the manager: Thank you for your review and we are sorry that our humble site did not live up to your expectations.

We do have members of the volunteer staff who check the site twice daily to discuss pitching concerns with and also members of the pool staff can contact the campsite manager. Our site is not a 'free for all' but due to it being so small we do allow pitching on a first come, first served basis. This being said the size of pitches is made clear on the pitch up website and check in confirmation email.

We apologize regarding the noise, however, it is difficult to enforce the quiet hours. We trust in campers being respectful towards each other and the space they are sharing.

Regarding the additional pool cost and location of toilets, this is all clearly stated on our Pitch Up listing.

The campsite and swimming pool are both charities which are non profit making. They are run and managed purely by volunteers. Lazonby is a very small, rural village offering a minimalistic camping experience with the opportunity to visit the community outdoor pool. We are sorry you did not enjoy your stay.

Liked: Great for kids - fab park and pool. Volunteers are helpful not in your face. Facilities good in terms of toilets and showers. Nice chilled vibe where can rock up and pitch where you like in one of the ten spaces. Area is lovely in the village and good walks to do also.

Disliked: Toilet block is too far during the night. Wouldn’t feel safe going as no light and along the road parallel to the river. Take yr own!

Local attractions

Lazonby is one of the stations on the very highly scenic Settle-Carlisle Railway line, a fave of famed travel scribe Bill Bryson and a must when in this part of the land. If you only have time for one journey on it, make it south to Settle rather than north to Carlisle, to pass over the mighty Ribblehead Viaduct; have the smartphones at the ready to snap a pic. The local area is rammed with riverside and woodland walks, with loads more to be had in the Lake District 15 miles away, and is popular with cyclists as it's about four miles from the C2C/Sea to Sea cycle route. Plenty of quiet country roads abound with views over the River Eden and surrounding area and to the Pennines if you're getting about by car. Penrith is eight miles from Lazonby Campsite and has lots of shops, supermarkets and services; travel there also for Penrith Castle, a climbing wall, cracking views across the Eden Valley from Beacon Hill and, happily, yet more Cumbrian pubs. And might you fancy a pub meal local to Lazonby? The Crown Inn, the Fetherston Arms and the Highland Drove are all recommended inns with food in the nearby villages of Kirkoswald and Great Salkeld.
