  • Peaceful site on a farm five minutes' drive from Bassenthwaite
  • Spectacular views over Bassenthwaite Lake and Skiddaw
  • Distillery and wildlife park within a few minutes' drive
Let’s face it, if you’re off to the Lake District you’re likely to be looking for lots of chances to look at lakes. So put a big tick in that box for Irton House Farm, a peaceful place where watery views can be had without even leaving your pitch. And it’s not just any old lake that forms the backdrop here: you’ll be looking out over Bassenthwaite, one of the area’s largest and loveliest (and in a region of pretty stiff competition too). Being a farm site, you’ll share those views with the resident sheep and chickens, but around the sizeable site there's plenty of space to relax or to run about and play games. (Not outdoor-games weather? Retreat to the games room for pool and table tennis.) As scenic as that outlook is, you’ll not be wanting to limit yourself to just the one lake, so it’s handy that there are plenty more within easy reach. Buttermere, Derwentwater and Crummock Water are all within a half-hour drive, as is the Solway coast if you fancy a blast of sea air with your aquatic views. Getting out for a walk or a bike ride is pretty straightforward on local paths, and you can safely get all mucky knowing that a bike wash and free heated shower block await your return. Post-activity pubs and grub can be had five minutes away in Bassenthwaite or with a slightly longer drive to Cockermouth.

What customers say

Spectacular views, spotless facilities, and friendly owners are highlights. Enjoy a peaceful rural retreat with great pitches & farm animals. Convenient for exploring. Some weekend noise & limited restrooms noted, plus a few rocky pitches.

Orchard powered grass tent campsite (two person)

Liked A beautiful site on a working farm with sheep grazing in neighbouring fields.great features like a shared fire pit (away from the camping area to minimise disruption), games room, hireable hot tub and amazing views. Seemed to attract a nice family clientele and wasn't rowdy. Was well maintained. Very friendly welcome and thoughtful staff who made the extra effort to find us a pitch we were happy with.

Orchard powered grass tent campsite

Liked The views are amazing, the facilities are modern, lovely & clean. There is free table tennis and pool table to use in the games room along with a dry room for when you’re things get wet!
The pitches in the orchard are lovely and private with separate sections for each pitch. The family who run the site are lovely too! Such a lovely place to stay .
Walks down to the lake etc but we didn’t stay long enough to do this, great location for lots of wainwright walks!

Orchard powered grass tent campsite

Liked The location, the facilities, the privacy of the pitches, the games room.

We (2 adults and 2 children) stayed for 4 nights and had a great time (even through stormy conditions.) We loved the privacy of our pitch, the views are incredible and the facilities were nice and clean. Our boys loved the games room! We also loved that the chickens wander around freely. We would've loved to have used the hot tub but it is 18+ and also way out of our price range. We went for a swim in the lake instead 😆

Orchard powered grass tent campsite

Liked My daughter (9) and I have been going camping every year for the past 5 years, and this has been our favourite campsite so far! We were welcomed upon arrival and given a full tour of the site. Our pitch was in the Orchard area, which didn’t come with the view but I loved the feeling of privacy. Cars are not permitted on the grass but large wheelbarrows are provided to transport your belongings to the pitch. There are 4 toilets, 2 of which have showers. Fire pits are provided on every pitch and you can purchase the wood on site at a reasonable cost. The swimming pool in the pictures is only available for 18+ to hire and at an additional cost of around £50 so didn’t bother with this. There is also a games room on site but we didn’t go here as we were lucky with the weather and spent all our time on site outside.

The location is lovely and very peaceful and only a 15-20 minute drive from Keswick, 5 min drive from the animal park and lots of other attractions nearby!

We were also lucky to have had such lovely camping neighbours who made our stay feel even more special.

Overall, we thoroughly enjoyed our stay and would recommend this site to anyone. I’m not normally one for staying in the same place more than once as I like to mix it up but I would 100% go back here.

Local attractions

It’s all about getting outdoors around here – there are walks galore through the area’s stunning scenery (not just lakes but also fells, forests and mountains). Routes are around for all abilities, from accessible ‘miles without stiles’ walks through to scrambles up Skiddaw (the 931-metre peak is 20 minutes’ drive from the farm). Put your boots aside for a while to favour other activities – head to Whinlatter Forest Park (20 minutes' drive) for mountain biking, Derwentwater (20 minutes) for kayaking and trout fishing, or Cockermouth Golf Club (10 minutes) for a round or two. If you’ve got the kids with you, you may like to take a trip to the Lake District Wildlife Park; if not, a dram at the Lakes Distillery or a tour of Jennings Castle Brewery may be on the cards. And of course it’s always worth making a point of visiting the Derwent Pencil Museum, 15 minutes away in Keswick.
