  • Award-winning amenities, plenty of space and Chester Zoo ticket sales
  • Seasonal pool, fishing lakes, tennis, play area, games and café
Some people prefer to keep their holidays very basic and remote indeed. Some people do not – and seek a spot with excellent leisure facilities, spotless amenities and customer-friendly approach… the better to get on with the important aspects of a holiday without stressing about the essentials. If this too is you, make your way to Manor Wood Country Park in green Cheshire countryside, where there’s loads to do on site, and where the amenities are so immaculate they’ve been given awards. Off site is pretty pleasing too, as Manor Wood is an easily accessible 25 minutes’ drive from Chester, Chester Castle and Chester Racecourse – and Chester Zoo, so say the kids, who’ll doubtless point out that their grownups can buy zoo tickets on site too. The park is in a nicely rural setting, home to two fishing lakes that adults and families can cast off at, and to a vast range of leisurely options indoors and out. The outdoor pool is open from the beginning of May through to September (whatever the weather), a climbing frame and play area are in the grounds and a games room with pool, table football and table tennis is indoors to take care of any inclement times. Back outside, tennis courts are available free of charge to all customers. A minute’s drive or half a mile’s stroll from Coddington, Manor Wood is surrounded by Cheshire and Nottinghamshire villages to pick up local produce and picnic bits and pieces. Make time/room too for a foray to the Lakeside Café on several occasions during your stay, for breakfast, snacks and light lunches to have indoors or outside while the kids investigate the play area; the café building also has free wifi, takeaway options and a small shop selling essentials and caravan supplies. Dogs are welcome too... so much so that they have their own section on the menu... Those who prefer things just a little quieter on their countryside holiday are invited to book from Monday to Friday in low season, to soak up the peaceful Cheshire surrounds in a more peaceful manner.

Liked: The landscaped areas very clean and tidy lots of space the kids loved the pool. Pitches were level not too windy area

Disliked: We had to ask some mornings for the pool to be opened and had a little wait it was a quiet week and the cafe was closed due to staffing which obviously cant be helped also the reception lady was a bit stressed and was rude to us on one occasion, felt like we were a burden being there but everyone else was lovely and helpful

Recommend to friends Visit again

From the manager: Thank you for taking the time to leave your feedback — we’re so pleased to hear that you enjoyed the clean and spacious grounds, level pitches, and that the kids loved the pool!

We’re really sorry to hear about the delay in opening the pool some mornings. During our quieter times, we do keep the pool cover across until customers would like to use it, as this helps retain the heat — but we appreciate that waiting isn’t ideal and will work on making this process smoother.

We also understand that the café closure was disappointing, and we’re sorry for the inconvenience. Unfortunately, it was due to staffing issues that couldn’t be helped at the time.

Most importantly, we're sorry to hear about your experience at reception. That’s not the standard of service we aim to provide, and we’ve shared your comments with the team to ensure it’s addressed.

From the manager: Thank you for your kind words! We’re so glad you and your daughters enjoyed the site – especially the heated pool and the family-friendly atmosphere. It’s great to hear it didn’t feel too busy and that the team could still sort you out with some coffees despite the café being temporarily closed.

We really appreciate your understanding and hope to welcome you all back soon for another lovely stay!

Liked: Well designed site with friendly reception staff.

Disliked: The toilets were disgusting for a camp site of this so called 5 star standard. Granted we were there during a very busy weekend at the end of half term, however this is no excuse. We had noticed earlier reviews about the state of the toilets, but decided to give them the benefit of the doubt - wish we hadn’t!! AVOID.

Recommend to friends Visit again

From the manager: Thank you for your feedback. We're really glad to hear you found the site well designed and our reception team friendly — but we're so sorry to hear about your experience with the toilets. That’s definitely not the standard we aim to provide, and we completely understand your frustration, especially during a busy weekend.

We want to look into this properly, so please could you get in touch with us directly with a few more details? Knowing when and where this happened will really help us take the right steps to make sure it doesn’t happen again.

Thanks again for taking the time to leave a review — we hope to hear from you soon.

Powered grass tent or trailer tent campsite

Liked: Lovely site. Much better than what I expected. There’s a park right next to the tent pitches so it great at evenings being able to sit outside our tent watching the kids playing. There’s a tennis court, games room, cafe, small shop, free WiFi and small pool with sun loungers. Also a large sand area in the parks for the little ones to play in. Toilets and showers were ok. There’s a gate to a nature trail from the park and there’s a couple of ponds for fishing plus we had a few visits to our tent from some cute little ducks.

Disliked: There are no decent supermarkets close by.

Recommend to friends Visit again

From the manager: Thank you so much for your lovely review! We’re really happy to hear you enjoyed your stay and made the most of the facilities — it’s great to know the park next to the tent pitches was a hit with the kids (and a bonus for relaxing evenings for you!). The ducks are always a welcome surprise too!

We appreciate your note about the lack of nearby supermarkets — it's definitely something we understand can be a bit inconvenient. We’ll continue doing our best to stock the essentials in our shop to help make things easier.

Thanks again for taking the time to share your experience. We’d love to welcome you back again soon!

Liked: Swimming pool, activities, space, amazing welcome! Good access to Chester and local activities too. Great WiFi access.

Disliked: Felt like the loo block could have been a wee bit tidier at times.

From the manager: Thanks so much for your lovely review! We’re really pleased to hear you enjoyed the swimming pool, activities, and open space — and it’s great to know you felt so welcomed. It’s also brilliant to hear the WiFi and location worked well for you too.

Thank you as well for the note about the loo block — we appreciate the feedback and will definitely keep an eye on this to make sure we’re maintaining the high standards we aim for.

FHU gravel travel trailer campsite

Liked: The breakfast baps, staff on reception very friendly, space to manoeuvre the caravan and park.

Disliked: Fully serviced pitch, no TV aerial, shop very poor considering the area, nearest shop 15 minutes away. Not a lot for my teenager to do as aimed at youngsters. I think it was overpriced and looked run down, we only stay on fully serviced pitches as I'm disabled, cafe only had access through reception, hard to navigate around the barrier and path uneven around cafe. This is the first bad review I have done. We went to go in the pool but it had mud in it, so we left. On our 2nd night 2 big highways vans arrived and set up, next day 3 washing lines put up and all the washing out! Not something I'd expect from a 5 star site. ( They were travellers) I asked office and was told they are fine. Loos not great, hand sanitizer at chemical disposal empty, no way to wash hands. Won't be going again, we left 1 day early......not a patch on the Plassey and same price !!

Recommend to friends Visit again

From the manager: Thank you for sharing your feedback. We're glad to hear you enjoyed the breakfast baps, found our reception team friendly, and appreciated the space around your pitch.

We’re genuinely sorry to hear that other aspects of your stay didn’t meet your expectations. Your comments about accessibility and facilities are noted, and we always encourage guests to raise any issues during their visit so we have a chance to resolve them where possible.

However, we do want to be clear: the comments and assumptions made about other guests are inappropriate and offensive. The guests you referred to were not travellers, and it’s disappointing to see such assumptions being made. We welcome respectful guests from all backgrounds and expect the same consideration from those staying with us.

We understand that our park may not be the right fit for everyone, and we appreciate you taking the time to share your thoughts.

Powered grass tent campsite

Liked: Beautiful site, really well presented. Lovely fishing lake. Cafe was always busy and good quality food for the price. The pitches were a great size with loads of room to spread out (tent pitches).

Disliked: Bit of a walk to the shower block, but never had to wait for a shower. The location is a little isolated so need to drive to get to any local attractions.

Recommend to friends Visit again

From the manager: Thank you so much for your lovely feedback! We're really pleased to hear you enjoyed the site, especially the fishing lake, spacious pitches, and our café – it’s great to know it hit the mark for quality and value.

We appreciate your comments about the walk to the shower block and the location – while the peaceful setting is part of our charm, we understand it can mean a bit of extra driving for local outings.

We hope to welcome you back again soon for another relaxing stay!

Local attractions

There’s plenty to do around Manor Wood for those days you’re not mooching around Chester (although do mooch around Chester for some considerable time too.) Drive about five minutes’ south for walks around the green space lying between Stretton and Clutton; a golf course and Stretton Watermill are here to stop off at. Beeston Castle, 20 minutes’ drive away just outside Tarporley, is a site of fortress ruins on a sandstone plain with spectacular views – across eight counties and over to Wales. Kids now revolting after watermill and castle time? The rides, farm and many flavours of The Ice Cream Farm adventure park are within 15 minutes’ drive.
