  • Well-equipped countryside park 12 miles from Chester
  • Award-winning amenities, plenty of space and Chester Zoo ticket sales
  • Pool, fishing lakes, tennis, play area, games and dog-friendly café
Some people prefer to keep their holidays very basic and remote indeed. Some people do not – and seek a spot with excellent leisure facilities, spotless amenities and customer-friendly approach… the better to get on with the important aspects of a holiday without stressing about the essentials. If this too is you, make your way to Manor Wood Country Park in green Cheshire countryside, where there’s loads to do on site, and where the amenities are so immaculate they’ve been given awards. Off site is pretty pleasing too, as Manor Wood is an easily accessible 25 minutes’ drive from Chester, Chester Castle and Chester Racecourse – and Chester Zoo, so say the kids, who’ll doubtless point out that their grownups can buy zoo tickets on site too. The park is in a nicely rural setting, home to two fishing lakes that adults and families can cast off at, and to a vast range of leisurely options indoors and out. The outdoor pool opens from the beginning of May – whatever the weather; a climbing frame and play area are in the grounds and a games room with pool, table football and table tennis is indoors to take care of any inclement times. Back outside, tennis courts are available free of charge to all customers. A minute’s drive or half a mile’s stroll from Coddington, Manor Wood is surrounded by Cheshire and Nottinghamshire villages to pick up local produce and picnic bits and pieces. Make time/room too for a foray to the Lakeside Café on several occasions during your stay, for breakfast, snacks and light lunches to have indoors or outside while the kids investigate the play area; the café building also has free wifi, takeaway options and a small shop selling essentials and caravan supplies. Dogs are welcome too... so much so that they have their own section on the menu... Those who prefer things just a little quieter on their countryside holiday are invited to book from Monday to Friday in low season, to soak up the peaceful Cheshire surrounds in a more peaceful manner.

Unpowered grass tent site

Liked: The registering in was seemless and quick. The grounds were in exceptional condition and no rubbish to be found. The ablutions near the swimming pool were in very good order. The pool was spotless.

Disliked: The toilets closest to the non electrical camping ground was not at all pleasant. They hadn’t been cleaned since I arrived. Also there was building works been carried out and where I camped, they were busy moving stones all day. It would have been nice to be advised of this.

Powered grass tent or trailer tent site

Liked: This was our 2nd camping trip with a 2 and 4 year old. For starters, it's Immaculate, the toilets, swimming pool, grounds and cafe it's all spotless and you feel clean and hygienic, it's quiet and peaceful, the cafe food was just delish and it's aesthetically pleasing, brand new play area outside for children, perfect for little ones, there is also a large play area suitable for younger children under supervision but great for older kids but this was currently getting upgraded! Look through these photos and you'll be booking in no time

Disliked: Nothing, couldn't fault it

Powered gravel caravan site

Liked: The heated swimming pool was great. No extra charge. The cafe was nice, lovely selection of cakes. Clean site and good sized pitches.

Disliked: The website showed and advertised 2 playgrounds but when we arrived, one was not finished being built. The other playground was quite a way from our pitch so our children weren’t able to access easily.

Liked: There was so much to do onsite. We only stayed for 2 nights and couldn’t fit it all in. The headed outdoor pool was definitely a hit with the whole family.

Disliked: We didn’t realise we had to bring out own kit for fishing so missed out there.

Fully-serviced gravel caravan site

Liked: Clean and tidy site. Travelled with our grandchildren who enjoyed plenty of space to ride their bikes. Swimming pool (although very crowded) On site shop and cafe

Disliked: Our grandchildren love play areas. Unfortunately the play area is currently closed as it is under construction (in July - peak season??). Surely, this is a winter job? Had we known about this we may not have booked Cafe expensive - we had lunch there and not one table had been wiped clean.

Local attractions

There’s plenty to do around Manor Wood for those days you’re not mooching around Chester (although do mooch around Chester for some considerable time too.) Drive about five minutes’ south for walks around the green space lying between Stretton and Clutton; a golf course and Stretton Watermill are here to stop off at. Beeston Castle, 20 minutes’ drive away just outside Tarporley, is a site of fortress ruins on a sandstone plain with spectacular views – across eight counties and over to Wales. Kids now revolting after watermill and castle time? The rides, farm and many flavours of The Ice Cream Farm adventure park are within 15 minutes’ drive.
