  • Pop-up campsite overlooking Fountains Abbey in North Yorkshire
  • Ripon 10 minutes’ drive, Brimham Rocks 15 and Harrogate 20 minutes
  • Off-grid grass pitches; playground and family pub five minutes’ drive
When you’re after the simple life in spectacular North Yorkshire surroundings, Abbey Falls Campsite comes up trumps. This no-frills pop-up campsite for tents and tourers is set right on the edge of gorgeous Nidderdale National Landscape countryside, and if that’s not quite enough, the pitches all overlook the fairytale ruins of Fountains Abbey, a gem of a place destroyed by King Henry VIII in 1539. As this is pretty much wild camping (albeit wild camping with gorgeous views), facilities are limited to male and female toilets, cold showers and a washing-up area – there is no hot water and no electricity on the site. There are dairy cows grazing in adjacent fields, a choice of walks along the River Skell directly from the pitches and a family-friendly pub in the village of Sawley (five minutes’ drive), where there’s also a kids’ park with a playing field. The historic city of Ripon (10 minutes) offers up an impressive cathedral, a brace of museums and lots of pubs and restaurants; elegant Harrogate (20 minutes) is also a popular dining and shopping hub.

Primitive grass RV campsite

Liked A quiet site, that is mainly flat. The services are basic but very functional; the men’s had two toilets, one of which had a shower. A sink for washing up and a drinking water tap. Rubbish and recycling bins.

No hot water but that’s the joy of semi wild camping.

Primitive grass tent campsite

Liked nothing

Disliked We had reserved a camping spot at 'Abbey Falls Campsite' . Upon arrival, the campsite turned out to be an empty field. There was a small shed with a toilet and shower, but only cold water. There was no one else at the campsite. No manager, no guests. There was a note saying someone would come by at 7:30 pm to check. We didn't feel safe setting up our tent, leaving our belongings, and visiting the city of Ripon. There was no supervision, and everyone has access to this field.

Therefore, we decided not to camp here. We informed the contact person (manager) by phone.

From the manager: We are sorry that you didn't feel safe staying at the camp site.
As advertised it is a pop up camp site with basic facilities.
As it was mid week it was quiet and unfortunately no other bookings at the time of your stay.

We would advise anyone who stays on our site not to leave valuables in their tent when they go out.

As stated site checks are done morning and evening and it is a self check in camp site, no set pitches just pitch where you like.

I would advise people to read the site description before booking.

We have refunded you for your stay even though it is against our policy to refund on the day of booking

Perfect, peaceful place to camp for the evening. Would stay again
