  • Pop-up campsite overlooking Fountains Abbey in North Yorkshire
  • Ripon 10 minutes’ drive, Brimham Rocks 15 and Harrogate 20 minutes
  • Off-grid grass pitches; playground and family pub five minutes’ drive
When you’re after the simple life in spectacular North Yorkshire surroundings, Abbey Falls Campsite comes up trumps. This no-frills pop-up campsite for tents and tourers is set right on the edge of gorgeous Nidderdale National Landscape countryside, and if that’s not quite enough, the pitches all overlook the fairytale ruins of Fountains Abbey, a gem of a place destroyed by King Henry VIII in 1539. As this is pretty much wild camping (albeit wild camping with gorgeous views), facilities are limited to male and female toilets, cold showers and a washing-up area – there is no hot water and no electricity on the site. There are dairy cows grazing in adjacent fields, a choice of walks along the River Skell directly from the pitches and a family-friendly pub in the village of Sawley (five minutes’ drive), where there’s also a kids’ park with a playing field. The historic city of Ripon (10 minutes) offers up an impressive cathedral, a brace of museums and lots of pubs and restaurants; elegant Harrogate (20 minutes) is also a popular dining and shopping hub.

Primitive grass RV campsite

Liked Excellent location , close to Fountains abbey , plus loads of footpaths for quiet walks . Toilet and shower kept clean and checked throughout the day . Fire pits available with logs as well for decent price . Owner checking in on everyone to see if all ok and no issues . Nice to watch the sunset over the fields .

Disliked Slightly bumpy on entry , exit , had to
reconnect waste tap on van .

Wonderful pop up site, clean facilities and friendly owner.

Primitive grass RV campsite

Liked Peaceful spot overlooking the Fountains Abbey. Lots of space to spread out and the dog had a wonderful time. Very clean toilets but I didn't try the shower. The best phone signal of the whole trip. Definitely recommend for those who like off grid camping.

Primitive grass tent campsite

Liked The field was spacious with plenty of room for people to camp away from other campers while staying near the toilet block.
The toilets did what they needed to do and access to water was always available. The fire pits came in handy mid way through a very rainy stay.

Disliked The only downside was that though it says cold water showers i didn't fully comprehend how cold until I stood under it. I had brain freeze before the conditioner went in haha. Although I can imagine it's lovely on a hot day

Very clean toilets and amazing views of the abbey. Super quiet on…
