  • Quiet site on an organic farm with vineyard and market garden views
  • Five minutes' drive from Coddenham and 15 minutes from Ipswich
  • Sustainable site with solar panels and well-maintained compost toilets
The fellows (Ben and Rory) and fellowesses (Femke the farmer and Starter the dog) at this quiet Suffolk spot do all they can to keep this site's green grounds in fine fettle. Fellows Farm is a small-scale organic holding in the Suffolk countryside that's been turned into a vineyard and traditional market garden by a green-fingered family who are keen to share their gorgeous views and local knowledge with their guests. Fellows Farm is on the edge of the quiet village of Gosbeck, 15 minutes' drive from central Ipswich and 25 minutes from the coast. Helmingham Hall – a 400-acre estate with a deer park, footpaths and a tea room – is a five-minute drive away and there's a pub in Otley (10 minutes). Coddenham (five minutes' drive) is a good place to stock up on grub at the community-run food shop, or you can source food on site: guests can preorder fruit and veg boxes from the market garden, or fish boxes filled with local catches. The farm's own micro-bakery grows and mills its own heritage grain, then turns it into organic sourdough loaves to buy (or wood-fired pizza, if you happen to be around on Friday night), and the shop also stocks excellent local milk, cheese, eggs and butter. Things are fully off-grid back at base – that means solar panels for electricity, compost toilets and water from a well (although standpipes are also available close to the pitches and phon charging is available). The site also has a hot shower; fires are allowed if you want to get even warmer (please bring your own firepit or use the communal firepit area). Barbecues and dogs are both permitted, and cyclists are welcome to use the barn for safe bike storage.

Local attractions

Fancy some animal-themed action? Hotfoot it down to Baylham House Rare Breeds Farm (15 minutes' drive) if you're tempted by the chance to meet furry farmyard critters. The farm has an important role to play – over 20 British livestock breeds went extinct over the course of the 20th century, with places like this doing their best to keep remaining heritage stock alive. If Ipswich (15 minutes) piques your interest – as well it might, with its waterfronts, gardens and busy shopping streets – go for a turn around Christchurch Mansion, a spin around Chantry Park or a look at the bikes and buses of yesteryear at Ipswich Transport Museum. After that little lot, wander down to the marina for waterfront bites and watch the yachts bobbing up and down in the distance… The closest beach is at Felixstowe (half an hour), where there's also a waterfront garden park and Landguard Fort, site of the last opposed seaborne invasion of England way back in 1667. It's also a busy port town, so head to Shingle Street or Aldeburgh (both 40 minutes) if you prefer more chilled spots.
