  • Well-maintained and green site five miles from the Suffolk coast
  • Lake and nature trail on site
  • On-site village shop and off-licence; pub 10 minutes' walk away
Travel five miles inland from the sunny Suffolk coastline and you’ll arrive at this little gem on the outskirts of Wenhaston. The gorgeous, well-maintained grounds at this smart site are just part of the attention to detail all around the park, which has been carefully laid out by the friendly and helpful owners. There's greenery all around here: this small and pretty site has its own nature trail and lake, and is surrounded by acres of countryside for hikes and rambles. If walking isn't your thing, hire bikes from the Southwold Bike Centre (20 minutes' drive away) to pedal around the flats of Suffolk; horse riding's pretty popular in the area too, or you could go golfing at Halesworth Golf Club five minutes' drive away. Taking things (much easier), the local pub is a 10-minute walk down the road. Heathside Caravans has a village shop and an off-licence on site for those holiday essentials, and a well-maintained shower block for guests' use. For more supplies. the village of Halesworth is under 15 minutes' drive away and Aldeburgh, Snape and Beccles are all within half an hour.

What customers say

This well-kept site boasts spacious spots, clean facilities, and friendly staff. Guests love the scenic setting, room for kids/dogs, and the stocked shop. Glamping pods and huts are a hit, though some find beds tough. WiFi is spotty, and there are often not enough toilets/showers when busy.

FHU grass campsite

Liked This is our return visit having enjoyed this site previously, and what is not to love, it is well situated within easy reach of some amazing east coast destinations such as Southwold, Aldeburgh and Thorpeness and there are plenty more to explore beyoind these. The camp site itself has all the amenties including toilets, showers, with access for persons with disabilities too, washing up and washine facilities also a recycling point for you to do your bit for the environment. There is a lovely little on site shop that caters for all camping essentials and more, friendly staff too that do their best to help out with any queries you may have. The serviced pitches are a genereous size, well positioned and bounded by hedges and trees and can accommodate most eventualities for the visitors. There are luxury cabins, glamping pods and shepherd huts and even a couple of donkeys in the adjacent field. Again all of these are well considered and set out without over crowding the site. There are plenty of places for the children to run, play and have fun in the football field, the tennis net and little park too allow parents to chill out while the children play well into the evening. There is even a nature walk into the woods and a pond hidden away next to the field of cows. A noise curfew is in place at 22:00 which is very sensible for all temporary residence as this encourages people to calm down for bed ready for the next day of fun. Of course this whole environment is very much benefitted by the weather so we shall be back again very soon to create some more wonderful memories.

Shepherd's hut

Liked convenient location. Plenty of space onsite. Other campers well behaved and considerate.

Disliked Not enough water points. Two toilets and sinks in ladies inadequate for the numbers staying, no privacy for sink washing or toothbrushing. Beds in shepherd huts very uncomfortable, thin well worn mattress and big dip in the middle. mattress covers not very clean, nor were the mattress topper covers.Fridge settings too high - all my food froze and had to be discarded. Blind on door window would have been appreciated.

FHU grass campsite

Liked Nice big pitches and well serviced. Plenty of places to walk the dogs, with fields, a small lake hidden in the woods. Great facilities with an added bonus of a very good value for money on site shop with friendly staff. Will definitely be coming back.

Local attractions

After all the walking, cycling, horse riding and golfing, get stuck into the area's history at the 12th-century fortress of Framlingham Castle, half an hour's drive away. Once the refuge of Mary Tudor, this fab place now has exhibitions, themed trails and an audio tour covering its centuries of history: enough to keep young Horrible Histories fans entertained too. Arty sorts will know that Suffolk is Constable country: if this is you, come armed with camera or paintbox to snap and sketch the countryside, harbour and coastal views around the area. You could also take a trip to art complex the Snape Maltings on the Alde river, for events, activities and evening entertainment in the concert hall. Seaside? But of course. Have a stroll around Southwold and its colourful beach huts, or drive half an hour north to Lowestoft for seaside amusements and Pleasurewood Hills, a nifty tucked away theme park with rollercoasters and attractions for all. Walberswick beach, around a 15-minute drive from Heathside, is a popular spot for crabbing. If you’re staying at Heathside for a while, set off early and spend the whole day on the Norfolk Broads (about an hour and 15 minutes' drive north, or drive south for around an hour and a half to the villages of Long Melford and Lavenham with their medieval timber-framed houses.
