Local horse and carriage rides

  • Peaceful bell tents in a secluded Suffolk woodland
  • Southwold, Norwich and Sutton Hoo all about 45 minutes' drive
  • Wellbeing-focused site with massages and a workout tent
Seeking some Suffolk seclusion? Head to Hill Cottage Holidays, a small-scale rural site where just a handful of bell tents have been tucked away in a wooded glade within a private nature reserve. The emphasis at this site is on relaxation and wellbeing, so as well as getting out into the fresh air nearby for activities such as walks, cycling, canoeing and horse riding, you’ll also be able to sign up for various therapies on site – massages, aromatherapy, facials and reflexology are all on the menu. There are exercise options too: perhaps a gentle stroll around the site's private woodlands (with things like quizzes and geocaching to capture young attentions) or a more extensive workout at the ‘well bell’, which is stocked with kit like yoga mats, spin bikes and stretch bands (plus a sofa, you may be pleased to hear). The surrounding area has plenty of things to do – from castle visits to beach days – but you don’t have to do anything much if you don't want to. Simply stick around on site for a bit of birdwatching, listening to the sounds of the woods and picking up interesting wildlife facts from the info boards around the site. The wellbeing vibe here stretches to making sure you don’t need to stress about packing – the luxurious tents are kitted out with all sorts of useful things including plush bedding, woodburning stoves and a kitchenette with utensils and crockery. Each tent has its own compost loo and hot shower, while shared facilities include a firepit/barbecue area. Homegrown organic fruit and vegetables are available to order, along with freshly laid eggs for a tasty breakfast.

You’ll have seen some of the local wildlife on site – now how about some local history? Start with the ruins of nearby Eye Castle (10 minutes' drive), before moving on to the grander Framlingham Castle (25 minutes). You may also like to step back in time at Bressingham Steam Museum & Gardens (20 minutes) or pay a visit to National Trust - Sutton Hoo (45 minutes), an Anglo-Saxon burial site. There’s also history on display in Norwich (45 minutes) and Bury St Edmunds (40 minutes) or the nearby 100th Bomb Group Memorial Museum (15 minutes). For more town wanders, Woodbridge (40 minutes) is a nice option. And how about a day at the coast? Southwold (45 minutes) is perennially popular, with its beach, pier, brewery and indie shops. There are lots of lovely walks along the coast too – the route to Walberswick for a pub lunch is a good choice.
