Carney Pools Camping and Caravanning: Pitches on site

General

  • Well-maintained level pitches with views over Cannock Chase
  • A 15-minute drive from Shugborough Hall; 20 minutes from Stafford
  • Two coarse fishing pools on site with accessible pegs

Fishing meets fab views at this site in the Staffordshire countryside, 20 minutes’ drive from Stafford.

The fishing part of the equation at Carney Pools Camping and Caravanning comes from the setting next to two coarse fishing pools known as Carney Pools, which have fishing for all ages and abilities (including wheelchair-accessible pegs) at a pretty 12-acre site. And the views? Those come from a location that looks out over the Cannock Chase Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty.

Pitches are set up in a level seven-acre field that’s sheltered by a well-established hedge and has access to two showers and toilet facilities (separate ladies’ and gents’ toilets plus accessible facilities). Dogs are welcome as long as they’re kept on a lead and cleaned up after; there’s a designated dog walk area on site for them to stretch their paws, and dogs aren’t allowed around the fishing pools until after the fishery closes for the day.

For a break from fishing there are plenty of riverside and canalside strolls nearby, along with walks in Cannock Chase and other outings to the likes of a National Trust estate, a farm park or the atmospheric National Memorial Arboretum.

To sort food and other essentials, it’s a journey of just under a mile to Wolseley Bridge where there’s a shop, pub, garden centre and Indian restaurant (which will also do deliveries if you’re in the mood to flop out on site). The folk here also recommend a trip to the farm shop three miles away to pick up bits for a picnic or barbecue back at base.

Please note

Swimming in the lake is not allowed.

Units longer than 6.7 metres are not allowed.

Facilities/activities including fishing are subject to extra charges payable on arrival.

Dogs are not allowed in the on-site accommodations.

Commercial vehicles (vehicles used for work-related purposes, carrying goods or fare-paying passengers) and sign-written vehicles are not permitted on site.

A charge of £1.00 ($1.16) applies for the use of the shower.

Units heavier than 3500 Kilograms are not allowed.

Continental touring caravans (caravans built with the door on the right-hand side) are not permitted.

Under 18s must be accompanied by their parents or legal guardians.

A cable measuring at least 20 metres is needed for the electric hook-ups.

We were very disappointed to be informed on arrival that we would not be able to fish the following day (saturday) because one pool was closed and the other was hosting a match. I would have expected to be notified in advance as fishing was the main purpose for booking. We decided to book an additional night so that we could fish all day on the Sunday only to be informed that it would be £35 when we had only paid £60 to camp on the Friday and Saturday. I did query why it was more expensive but was told that was the price, take it or leave it.

From the manager...

Hi Jo, unfortunately a decision was made by the environment agency to close one of our pools late Friday afternoon so we had no time to let any campers/carvanners know. I can only apologise that you stayed with us to fish but sadly was out of our hands.
Our prices have increased to £35 per night as our electric has also increased as you can see through Pitch up, your stay was honoured at £30 per night as you had booked with old prices.
Kind regards Hollie

Huge field with a big play area for the children in the centre. Pitches were spread out, lovely staff on check in and check out, clean toilet facilities.

    Disliked:

One of the Fishing lake was closed so some of the lads in our group couldn’t fish as it was competition only fishing.

Just some Information about a later check out available somewhere as it was only when checking out we found out it was optional for just £5 to check out at 3pm. We had already packed away by this point.

    Not dislikes as such :)

The location was a great distance to cannock chase and also great to be right by the fish ponds. The staff were very friendly. The pod was a great size and easy to assemble the bed!

    Disliked:

The pods were very far away from the toilets and showers and feel that 2 showers and 3 toilets isnt enough. We were not made aware of the £1 charge to use the shower so had to get redressed to get money from the pod. Felt there could have been a mini fire pit/bbq included with the pod and wish the pods were a little more secluded from the rest of the campsite and neighboring pod.

Local attractions

Rural break not complete without spotting some animals out in the open? Try your luck on the trails around the Staffordshire Wildlife Trust’s Wolseley Centre (five minutes’ drive) or head to Amerton Farm (15 minutes) to feed lambs, groom horses and see chicks hatching (or let off some steam at the indoor and outdoor play areas…)

For more of those peaceful country rambles, spend a thoughtful day at the National Memorial Arboretum or see if you can catch one of the opening dates at Mitton Manor Gardens for some splendid topiary, water features and sculptures. Both are 25 minutes away.

Can’t resist the chance to poke about in a palatial country house? Nip over to the National Trust estate at Shugborough Hall or get your imagination going at the remains of Chartley Castle; both can be reached with a 15-minute drive. If that’s all a tad sedate, you may find the thrills of Hednesford Hills Raceway (25 minutes) more to your liking.
